Plus she grew up on an island of all women (wait, is that changed?).
But it's going to be a guy. And iconic doesn't necessarily mean one of the big guns. Isn't Aquaman still married to Mera?

Specifically Wonder Woman being gay appeals more to the majority of the target audience than Superman being gay. But it'll be a male superhero this time anyway.

So they got rid of Superman's trunks because morons (who largely don't even read comics so its not like their opinion even matters) think superheroes wearing underoos on the outside looks gay. Now that they have gotten rid of the trunks, they may make him gay anyway. Yeah, makes sense...

I don't have a problem with an established character turning out to be gay. But usually all these recent announcements from DC sound like extremely desperate attempts to get readers. Hastily rebooting the entire DC (except for the top selling titles like Batman and GL), making Watchmen sequels, and now this.
I would prefer that they allow the quality of the comics to speak for themselves but since comics aren't that popular these days, I guess they gotta do what they gotta do.

My first thought on hearing this was that they were going to turn the screws on Moore even more and make one of the Watchmen characters gay. But then they reconfirmed that this was in the new 52 universe...

It will be a "major iconic male character not seen since the relaunch."

I can't really think of anyone that would fit except for Wally West.

Have we seen Dr. Fate yet (maybe on Earth 2... any other missing JSAers)? The Atom (Choi or Palmer, I think I saw him in a promo shot of Justice League, but not sure if he's in the book yet)? In a play on words, Icon? Black Lightning? Freddy Freeman (maybe in the Shazam backup)? Aqualad (either one, mainly because of his prominence in Young Justice)? Beast Boy (is Ravagers out yet)?
Geo Force (not super iconic), Adam Strange (that would kinda conflict with his origin/motivation), Elongated Man (fans would absolutely go nuts), Red Tornado (would be a cop out since he's a robot)...
Or maybe a villain?

I would have guessed Plastic Man, but I haven't been keeping up too much on the DC Universe since the relaunch.

You don't understand, they've planned this well in advance and were intentionally keeping this character away because they knew it would make great comics. Really. It's only coincidence that this is revealed right when Northstar is getting engaged. Yeah.

To be fair, DC has historically had a far more progressive stance towards homosexual characters than Marvel. Especially in the 80s compared to Jim Shooter's "There are NO GAYS in the Marvel Universe" stance...

I remember long-ago discussion of Element Lad being gay, but I think that may have been just fan speculation rather than real stories. And he's not even a second-tier character.

There are many other gay characters in DC continuity, including the current Batwoman, the blue Starman Mikael (the one I referenced as being in the previous Justice League), Wildstorm's Midnighter and Apollo, Gen 13's Rainmaker, etc. I don't know what Hokeyboy's talking about as far as the 80's goes, though.
