Re: Major DC Comics Character...out of closet?
Sorry but this is sad. I don't care who the character really is but changing one that's been around 70yrs one way and into something else overnight just to make a PC statement or satisfy a certain segment is pathetic. I could understand say a character 10-15 yrs but some of those that probably helped make the decision were probably not even born when the GL was introduced.
And the next million dollar question....what about the next GL movie? What...the GL goes to "Brokeback Mountain". There are somethings like movies or songs better left as is and not re-made. Better just to create a original.

It is funny though reading comments from non-comic readers on other sites about how they wonder if Ryan Reynolds will be gay in the next movie.

As a huge JSA fan im shocked. But not in a bad way. I can live with a gay Alan Scott.
I do think the whole making characters gay just to sell comics is kinda lame though.

This is the problem ... DC just torpedoed any hopes of a GL2 movie. Movies are not made for the hardcore comic book readers. I would wager most of the people who saw the movie do not know there have been Green Lanterns other than Hal Jordan. They will not understand that Alan Scott being gay in some alternate universe has nothing to do with Ryan Reynolds playing Hal Jordan as the Green Lantern.

^ I think it's the Justice League Detroit team... Citizen Steel, Gypsy, Vibe, and Vixen.

The 1950s called and want their joke back.

So it's NOT an iconic character. It's the Alan Scott Green Lantern from the 40s who hasn't had his own book since that decade.

Then they must not have been paying very close attention. There were other Green Lanterns besides Hal Jordan in the movie, lots of them actually.

I don't have problem with a gay character...I have a problem of changing the past instead of building or making a new one out of the present. And where does this stop? What happens if some Gay Women's group gets upset and wants a Gay Super Women. Maybe there are Gay Blacks that's upset at having a "White Guy' and want a Gay Black Super Hero. In fact we need a few more Black Super Heros. And don't forget the Asias or Middle Easterns....
Already having to change Wonder Woman's custome so not to offend anyone. Heck...why not go ahead and just call Captain America something like Captain World so we don't offend those tht hate America....yea; that's the ticket. Open a Pandora Box and you're going to get more than you bargin for.

I don't think they changed Wonder Woman's costume so as not to offend anyone. She still wears here star spangled panties.

But they're not changing their past. DC just relaunched their whole line and this Alan Scott is a blank slate. He has no ties to what came before, no kids, no connection to WWII. He's essentially a new character.

They tried to change WW's costume to look modern and less "comic book ridiculous" to the main stream. That's why all the dudes have armor instead of tights now. Initially, that meant pants and a jacket and doing away with the gaudy style of the star spangled banner on her crotch. I mean, very few can pull this off these days:

But since the reboot it appears they went back to the classic style mostly, so there isn't much to complain about. American flag star underwear with a few less stars, no jacket, and cleavage are in season.

It has nothing to do with making a particular minority group happy. DC and Marvels sales are tanking so they're trying to do something to grab some media attention. Gay rights and gay marriage is a hot topic, so they turn a character gay, but one that nobody cares about.
With Wonder Woman, her sales are always bad so recently they tried to do something different. They'll do whatever they think will sell.
And if this Alan Scott character is a blank slate, why is DC referring to him as "iconic"?

Never heard of him.
So long as they're converting retired characters, they should have had someone with a wife say, "Honey, I love you dearly, and I tried hard to make you happy, but I can't pretend anymore." Then start the soap opera.

Does anyone seriously call their significant other "love" these days?

Wonder Woman sales weren't always bad. Her, Batman, and Supes all seem to have their ups and their downs over the decades. I think Wonder Woman was a huge seller in the 80s if I'm remembering correctly something that I read a while ago. Of course, the 80s was a long time ago at this point.

Re: Major DC Comics Character...out of closet?
It would have been more interesting, but Wonder Woman is mostly kept around DC for licensing purposes. She's never been a big seller in comics outside of brief stretches and most people only know the character from the television show. DC was not going to do anything that hurt her licensing potential in the mainstream media. It's why I thought people were nuts when I saw serious suggestions that Batman or Superman were going to be revealed as the gay character.
