Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

Four months in, the DC Comics relaunch seems to be a success. The most recent sales figures show Justice League #1 selling more than 360,000 copies since August, and Batman #1 and Action Comics #1 selling more than 250,000. By contrast, Marvel’s strongest seller was Ultimate Spider-Man #160, which was in the 160,000-copy neighborhood. These figures seem to reflect sales in the direct market only; it would be interesting to see how many digital copies have been sold.

Got my DCSB shipment yesterday. As I arranged my books in reading order, I realized that I'm going to be cutting a few offerings next month once storylines wrap up. I wanted to give the titles I was reading at least one storyline to decide.

As far as I go, DC lured me back into the fold. I'll probably stick with at least 15 New 52 titles. I'm also buying two Marvel titles now, too, so Marvel also saw a boost.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

And added:

BATMAN INCORPORATED – Writer: Grant Morrison. Artist: Chris Burnham. The acclaimed ongoing writer of ACTION COMICS, Grant Morrison, presents a fresh take on BATMAN INCORPORATED, in which the Batman brand is franchised globally in preparation for a major international threat.

EARTH 2 – Writer: James Robinson. Artist: Nicola Scott. The greatest heroes on a parallel Earth, the Justice Society combats threats that will set them on a collision course with other worlds.

WORLDS’ FINEST – Writer: Paul Levitz. Artists: George Perez and Kevin Maguire. Stranded on our world from a parallel reality, Huntress and Power Girl struggle to find their way back to Earth 2. Perez and Maguire will be the artists on alternating story arcs.

DIAL H – Writer: China Miéville. Artist: Mateus Santoluoco. The first ongoing series from acclaimed novelist China Miéville, this is a bold new take on a cult classic concept about the psychological effects on an everyman who accidentally gains powers to become a hero.

G.I. COMBAT – Writer: J.T. Krul. Artist: Ariel Olivetti. Featuring the return of a classic DC Comics series, THE WAR THAT TIME FORGOT, along with rotating back-up stories and creative teams – including THE UNKNOWN SOLDIER, with writers Justin Gray and Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Dan Panosian; and THE HAUNTED TANK, with writer John Arcudi and artist Scott Kolins.

THE RAVAGERS – Writer: Howard Mackie. Artist: Ian Churchill. Spinning off from TEEN TITANS and SUPERBOY, this series finds four superpowered teens on the run and fighting against the organization that wants to turn them into supervillains.
Put me down for Earth 2 and Worlds Finest. Which is 2 more for me with DC, since I wasnt getting any of the 6 canceled.

I really hope there's not a whole lot of crossover between Earth 1 and Earth 2; that gets so confusing to deal with over time. I'm interested in Batman Inc even though Morrison sometimes confuses the heck of me (newbie who's read almost his whole Batman run and is reading his Action Comics).

The idea of the World's Finest NOT being Batman and Superman is interesting, but I can't drop much more on books than I already am. Good for DC, though, to be putting out new titles and keeping things fresh.

Hmm... having since dropped the few DCnU books I had been getting, I am intrigued by Earth 2 and Worlds Finest. As a kid, i loved Dial H for Hero, but I realize it's not a very deep concept, and I wonder if they'll keep the whole rotating powers thing.

It seems like a lot of the cancelled titles have minorities in a starring role (Terrific, Static Shock, OMAC). I know DC didn't do it on purpose, and I don't think they should keep a series running for the wrong reasons, but after that whole thing about killing all the minorities off in the old DC Universe (which was really just them reverting back to the 80's forms of most characters), you'd think they'd tread carefully. I wonder how Firestorm is doing... :)

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

I heard great stuff about Static Shock. I would have checked out Men of War, had it been available at Barnes and Noble. It wasn't. I liked the idea of reading something that wasn't likely to crossover with other series, and the covers were some of the best of the entire New 52.

I got behind on #4s, but finally got hold of the three that I'm reading. I was kind of disappointed in both Detective Comics and Batgirl; I found them rather perfunctory resolutions to the otherwise really enjoyable opening story arcs in their respective titles. I did like the way that Tony Daniel set up the next story arc for Tec by introducing The Penguin in a peripheral manner.

Batwoman #4 was surprisingly good. I was genuinely into the whole issue for a change. I found it odd that they put all of the ads together in the back of the comic. There are only a couple of story pages after the staples in the middle of the comic. Still, I was actually caught up in it from start to finish; easily the best issue so far. If issue #5 can continue this quality, I may very well extend its probation.

I just got ahold of Animal Man #1 and it was a great read.

MinLShaw, as someone who loved the original Milestone version of Static (it had an early Spiderman feel to it), I can tell you that this version kinda stunk. There was a cool side story about his sister being cloned, but that was it IMHO.

Well, that sucks. Still, it seems like the character has had enough of a following that they should have been able to make some changes and boost sales without resorting to outright cancellation so early. I'm sure he'll return eventually, though.

Possibly a creative team issue. Maybe if they had McDuffie involved, it could have had a similar style that people would have liked it.

Ugh

Following the news of DC Comics' announcement of The New 52 "Second Wave" and the cancellation of six of the initial launch, the publisher announced, via its blog The Source, an expanded role in the New 52 for Rob Liefeld, who had been pulling double duty as writer and artist on the cancelled "Hawk and Dove." Beginning in May, Liefeld will take on new creative responsibilities for three of the initial New 52, including writing and illustrating "Deathstroke" and plotting "The Savage Hawkman" and "Grifter."

Prediction for Wave 3 cancellations:

Grifter
Deathstroke

Worst part is that I'm enjoying Deathstroke and Grifter. I thought that Hawk and Dove was the worst series out of all them.

I'm also glad that they didn't cancel Voodoo...

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

I understand that it's not economically practical to keep 52 monthlies in print and the low-selling books ought to be canned. I can also appreciate why DC had several of these books on a short leash in the first place. That all makes sense to me.

What I find confusing are all the early-run creative changes. It seems to me that this New 52 should have been planned out at least a full year in advance, but these periodic statements make it seem that these changes are being made on the fly. It doesn't instill me with a lot of confidence that there's an actual editorial direction at work, and without that there's really no safeguard against quickly devolving right back into the same mess of convoluted storytelling and gimmicky crossovers to boost sales that have been the problem all along.

In for these:

BATMAN INCORPORATED
EARTH 2
WORLDS’ FINEST
DIAL H

Hopefully the James Robinson who wrote Starman & Golden Age is writing Earth 2. Not the James Robinson who shit out the recent Justice League of America run.

I'm definitely down for these 2...I remember reading the John's issues of JSA when Gog sent Powergirl back to her correct earth and thinking, "I would totally read a series based here, this is so much fun." Here's to hoping Robinson's Earth2 is that much fun.

I got behind on the Batman Inc before the new 52, so I'm just waiting for the trade, Ill do the same with this...I find it easier to read Morrison when you have more to read. I'm usually lost when going one issue at a time, I'm not smart enough i don't think.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

I'm a bit behind on making notes about what I've been reading, but I'm up through issue #5 on Batgirl, Batwoman and Detective Comics. Also, this weekend I made my way out to The Great Escape in Louisville for their 35th anniversary sale and I picked up All Star Western #1.

Batgirl #1-5
Despite some minor quibbles, most of them in the first two issues, I'm really digging this book so far. Great balance of humor and energy. Simone can spin a page-turning yarn and I've always liked Barbara as Batgirl. This was one of two books I was determined to read all along and the first five issues have been a pure delight. I'm stoked to keep reading.

Batwoman #1-5
The art is gorgeous and I like the subplot involving Kate Kane and Maggie Sawyer. The rest of this is quite inconsistent and has yet to really wow me. I really liked issues #2 and #4. I was disappointed in the odd numbered issues. They're getting a new artist starting with the next arc, though, so I'm hopeful that means there'll be more attention paid by the two guys who write it to the actual story content. If this book can get its act together, it has a lot of potential. I said all along I would make a decision whether to keep reading once this first arc was over. I've decided to keep going for now, but if I get two consecutive clunkers, I'm liable to call it quits.

Detective Comics #1-5
I found issue #1 a bit perfunctory and I recall griping about some of the dialog, but on the whole I've loved this Bat-book so far. Issue #4 was kind of a weak conclusion to the opening "Dollmaker" arc, but I found the arc itself quite interesting and I really enjoy the way that the story has segued from that arc into this new one with The Penguin. Daniel fits in some great WTF? moments that have genuinely shocked me. I'm excited to keep reading this one, and I'm glad I indulged when I picked up the first issue on a whim.

Action Comics #1
Nice premise, but the extra dollar was discouraging. Also, I was disappointed to learn that the book would be moved forward in time to take place concurrently with the rest of the DCnU after just a few issues so I bailed after #1. If I can find subsequent issues cheap enough, though, I might bite and at least read through the opening arc.

All Star Western #1
The second of the two titles I wanted to read all along. I'd have been buying this all along if it was sold at Barnes and Noble, which is a lot easier for me to get to than The Great Escape (though I'd much rather support TGE). Ah could do without some of tha affected dialog, but I kind of dig the buddy cop story of Arkham and Hex. There's some nice, dark humor to the first issue and I quite enjoyed reading it. I've decided I want to go back and pick up #2-5 soon and see about becoming a regular reader.

All Star Western has suprisingly been one of my very favorites of the New 52. I'm going to have a hard time pulling the trigger on it month in and out because of it's $4 cover price ($2.79 through DCSB), but I'll definitely buy the trades.

Wait, JH Williams isn't going to do the art on Batwoman anymore? That's yet another artist that's only writing in the new DC Universe (unless Williams, Von Sciver, and Manapul are working on some other projects or something)

Looking it up, they got the artist from Madame Xanadu, but that will still be a bit of a jarring change.

What appealed to me about it was that it was a comic not obviously likely to wind up embroiled in crossovers. Plus, I've really gotten into the Western milieu in recent years. I admit, I was leery when I read that it was set in Gotham City and that the Arkham, Cobblepot and Wayne families would be prominent. But I admit, that first issue made it feel entirely acceptable to me. Maybe I would have been more resistant had I read it when it was first published, but now I'm 5 issues into three other books so I'm more acclimated to such things.

I'm only buying the Legion titles right now, but I am an old school Earth 2 fan and like the creative team. If the monthly cost is less than three bucks, this will be the first "52" title I'll pick up . (I'm not buying any monthly, DC or Marvel, that's over $2.99. I tradewait instead.)
