I'm surprised Swamp Thing, and to a lesser extent, Animal Man, aren't getting the HC treatment.

Captain Marvel finally changes to Shazam. Not Surprised

Geoff Johns and DC Comics have announced that the legendary boy turned hero Captain Marvel will officially have his name changed to Shazam.

Captain Marvel has been a staple in the history and continuity of DC Comics for decades, but has also been a hot topic of debate both inside and outside the comics fandom. There’s been massive amounts of legal issues with Marvel Comics over the name as well, due to Marvel holding intellectual property over the name as a title for a comic book. So, the comics in which he appears have traditionally been under some sort of variation of Shazam, and the phrase was used for young Billy Batson to turn into the all powerful magic hero. But legal problems aren’t also the only problem with Captain Marvel as the non-comics reading public misunderstands the character’s actual name, as the majority are convinced that the character has always been known as Shazam, partially as a result of the 1974 television series.

So, it’s in the face of this and many other reasons that DC has finally pulled the trigger and is calling the hero Shazam with the re-debut of the character with the back-up story Curse of Shazam! within the pages of Justice League #7 that is set to be released in March.

In an interview with Newsarama, Johns explains some of the reasons why the name change will occur.
One is that everybody thinks he’s called Shazam already, outside of comics. It’s also, for all sorts of reasons, calling him Shazam just made sense for us….

And, you know, every comic book he’s in right now has Shazam on the cover. So I think just by embracing that and calling him Shazam….

And you’ll see it actually make sense in story, why he’s called Shazam rather than Captain Marvel. That’s just what he’s going to be called for us from now on.
Its true about the show. If I were to say Capt Marvel to my parents, they would have no idea, but would know Shazam.

I'm not hugely familiar with Captain Marvel, but isn't Shazam the wizard that give him his powers? So are there two Shazams now? Shazam, the wizard, and Shazam, the former Captain Marvel?

Shazam was always a dumb name, like calling someone "Kazowie"

Plus he can never say his own name without reverting back (unless they're changing that too). Although I guess Captain Marvel Jr. has always had that problem anyway.

"Who are you?"
"I'm Sha... uh... let me write it out for you."

Just read that Jeff Lemire has replaced Peter Milligan on Justice League Dark. Lemire plans on removing two characters and adding three new ones to the roster.

Milligan is taking over Stormwatch.

But I doubt your parents are ever planning to buy a Captain Marvel comic book, whether he is called Shazam or Captain Marvel in it. Let's be honest, comic book fans had no problems for decades with the name. This is all about DC/Warner's attempt to better position the character for non-comics media like movies and television. I suspect the comics market played little role in this decision.

I'm still in the weeding out process of the few books I was reading, and after the last issue of "Batman: The Dark Knight", I'm pretty sure I'm done with that one. I don't even want to know how they'll F up the Night of Owls crossover in that one, and it will free up some space for another book in my list.

Other than that, I'm still with Batman, Detective, Nightwing, Batgirl, Aquaman, and Justice League. I'll drop one of the Superman books (maybe both, but Superman is kind of meh), and I've already dropped Wonder Woman. I know all of them are traditional, mainline books, but I'm a newb and going with titles and characters I know. Might branch out later, though.

Outside of JLA (which is OK IMHO), those are pretty much my favorites along with Swamp Thing and All Star Western. I am also liking Batman and Robin quite a bit.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

I haven't decided on JLA completely yet; it seems kind of empty right now, but I'm holding on to see the relationships develop for a little while.

i wish I'd picked up ASW early, but I'm waiting for the trade on that one. I'll start looking at it with the Night of Owls crossover.

I might pick up Swamp Thing at some point (Snyder's such a good writer), and I keep hearing great stuff about Animal Man. I'm not a fan of the horror genre in anything, though, so those may be out of the question altogether.

I'm finally going to make some more cuts after I read up the the 6th issue of remaining titles I'm still getting. February is definitely the make-or-break month for titles I'm on the fence about.

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

DC just posted that Gregg Hurwitz (the guy who's been writing the Penguin miniseries) will be taking over duties on The Dark Knight beginning with issue #10. The post states that he'll be tackling (wait for it...) a Scarecrow storyline, which is annoying since that's what we've been dealing with for the past 5 issues.

Ha! That's exactly what I've been waiting for myself. I figure I'd give these an entire storyline before I decide. Although truth be told, I've pretty much already decided. While some of these books have been interesting enough, they just aren't my cup of tea (Frankenstein comes to mind). Others have just not been good at all (Green Arrow).

Re: DC UNIVERSE Reboots in September, Same Day Digital Linewide

Those of you who are thinking of bailing on books may want to double-check with DC first to see which creative teams are about to change. It might be that the next wave of writers and artists will be more to your liking.

This has me wondering, though: Did DC actually plan out this major relaunch but not account for whether different writers and artists were going to even last nine issues on each book? Or was this part of the plan all along, to keep things fresh every several months? 'Cause there has already been, or is about to be, quite a lot of turnover. It either smacks of DC not really knowing what the hell they're doing (quite possible), or this is all orchestrated.

I'm just hopeful that the writing on Batwoman levels out. There's no excuse for a book with two writers to be so wildly inconsistent as that one was for the first five issues. I'm hopeful that with the new artist taking over, both writers will devote more attention to plotting and pacing.

I posted an article a while back, but I remember Didio saying they were going to have no tolerance for lateness (unless your name is Jim Lee). Maybe it's because of that?

And for the "wait for the new creative teams" thing, I did that for years with books like Teen Titans, which changed directions and writers every six months or so, getting suckered in by the new direction. If you don't like a book, drop it and let other people pay to see if the new direction is any good. It's not like these are going to become scarce or anything, what with digital copies and reprints and trades.

That being said, with the trades and HCs finally being solicited, which initial story arcs were worth it? I've only read Action, Legion Lost, and LoSH, and I would maybe recommend Action, but it's far from a must-buy (and I've dropped all three). I'm thinking Animal Man and Swamp Thing. I've read Johns's Green Lantern run in HCs so far, but I might just end my run before the nuDC stuff... is any of the new GL stuff any good?

It may very well be. I only read three books and two of them are getting new artists; Batwoman and Detective Comics. In both cases, the art was also done by the writer (or co-writer in the case of the former). I can easily see where that would become too taxing a pace to maintain, and why help would be brought in.

The only problem there is that then you're outsourcing your own opinion. I trust very few people to know my taste well enough to give me a truly credible endorsement (or to pan something). Others may be more comfortable with your approach, of course.

Batgirl has been a lot of fun as a monthly. It's one of those cases where I'm not sure how its story would be to read in a collected edition. I think it might seem kind of weak, at least relative to some of the others. I loved the "Dollmaker" story that opened 'Tec. Batwoman was clearly written with the collected edition in mind and I suspect it will be a gorgeous volume.

It's also worth noting that there are still a few issues yet to be published for most of the collected editions that are forthcoming. We could see a noticeable change in quality over the next couple of months that might dramatically sway which collected editions we would recommend.

It's apparent to me the move was a sudden and drastic change in outlook, driven by corporate demands above the level of DC. I'm not sure the way it happened is how DC would have said goodbye to the Post-Crisis universe if they could have planned it out months in advance.

DC completely dominated the top 10 sales chart once again in January. Aquaman was the #10 spot. That means Aquaman outsold every single comic Marvel released in January.
