Re: Spider-man 'One More Day' Thread - WARNING: NO Spoilers

The Infamous Whisper from One More Day Revealed!

Spoiler:

Really Joe? 3 years for this? And I like how she takes Mephisto's word for it that he won't meddle in Peter's life any further. MJ, He's the fucking devil!
Whatever. I really like the huge 'Bong!' at the end. I get the impression that's what Joephisto was smoking when he wrote this whole thing.

You think that's bad. How about why Peter & MJ don't get married.

Lets just say some circumstances involving a Mephesto-possessed bird and a rogue brick result in Spidey falling off a roof and getting trapped under an unconscious fat man. It cuts back to MJ at the wedding all sad/pissed that she got left at the altar, and then the issue ends.

I'm completely serious...Peter misses his wedding...because a fat man is laying on top of him. I'm trying to get a scan of those few panels.

P.S. Editor Tom Brevoort responds!

Re: Spider-man 'One More Day' Thread - WARNING: NO Spoilers

What, I could never in a hundred years think of that. Only someone as insane as Quesadilla could think of it.

Oh, by the way...Scan!

Another thing that bothers me with the issue. The majority of it is a reprint of Annual #21 from 1987, with some new pages inserted to show the effects Mephisto had on it. Well, the original pannels are about what you'd expect, very 80's comic-y with 80's refrences. So it's a little jarring when in the new pages, the characters are all speaking with current slang, making current refrences and talking on modern cell phones. I know Marvel works on a 'sliding time scale' (so basically the events from the 80's comics only happened 5-10 years ago) but I've never seen it employed like that in a single book. Weird.

Re: Spider-man 'One More Day' Thread - WARNING: NO Spoilers

I dont even know what to say to this. Time to jump over to CBR and read the inevitable shit fest.

48 pages so far, and the editor of Spider-Man has joined the fray jumping on people who dont like it, or call Joe Q out:
http://forums.comicbookresources.com...d.php?t=331738

As far as I'm concerned Spider-Man went into hiding after Civil War and the books were canceled.

Kee-ripes! After reading these comments I'm really glad that I quit reading Spidey when I did! This just sounds like a shit-fest now.

Somebody with art skills ought to do a mash-up of that "Spider-Man under a fat guy" panel with the famous Ditko "Spider-Man under the Master Planner's machinery" sequence:

O.M.I.T. is as ridiculous as One More Day was (which is to say "incredibly ridiculous"), but as a general rule, I've been enjoying the book since JMS left.

One Moment in Time sounds like a horrible daytime soap opera.

Re: Spider-man 'One More Day' Thread - WARNING: NO Spoilers

Spider-man has been shit ever since Marvel editors started screwing with the title. I stopped reading it after issue 40, during JMS's original run. The problem is that they don't allow their writer's to have free reign when dealing with their own comics and feel the need to "shake it up" whenever they feel like it, which happens to be a yearly occurence.

Re: Spider-man 'One More Day' Thread - WARNING: NO Spoilers

Guess what? New issue is out.

So after he misses the wedding, Peter goes to meet MJ. They talk, and when it becomes apparent he can't give up being spider-man, MJ says that she just can't do it. They can't be married because she's too afraid of losing him.

Later, MJ goes by Peter's place and talks to him. She says that she can't stay away from him, she loves him too much. Peter attempts to ask her to marry him again, but she declines and says that they can love each other and live together and still not marry. (So apparently she isn't afraid of losing him if they are just live-in boyfriend & girlfriend.) For some reason MJ also brings up that she wants kids, but that she has to forget about it because she would never bring a kid into the life Peter and her have*.

As for the reveal for how Aunt May survives? Everything goes down exactly how it did. Exactly. May is shot, Peter goes to everyone in the Marvel Universe he can think of for help and they all tell him that it is just not possible. There is no way to save her.

This is where it gets really weird. Peter goes to visit Aunt May in the hospital. She flatlines and Peter runs in and...

Spoiler:

Yes, he saves her by doing chest compressions.

Seriously. So why did Mephesto have to intervene at all? I thought he was a last resort to save Aunt May. A spider-heart massage was all that was needed? God this is lazy story telling.

Also, remember that OMD undid the unmasking? They make refrence to it in this issue, so it still happened apparently. Not sure how Joephisto will explain that away.

*She compares having a child with Peter to taking that baby and putting it into the same type of abusive household she grew up in.
1) I bet that makes Peter feel good being told that.
2) That undoes the whole baby thing from the 90's (Unless they had an accident). So that most likely throws the Clone Saga out of whack.

Good God. Simply unreal.

15 pages of WTF so far http://forums.comicbookresources.com...d.php?t=333786

Such a shame. Spider-Man is one of my favorite characters, but twice so far in my collecting I have simply stopped reading. The clone saga killed my interest, but the movie and JMS writing brought me back. OMD/BND turned me off again. Sigh.

Re: Spider-man 'One More Day' Thread - WARNING: NO Spoilers

Okay, I feel I should post two points of clarification.

As for Peter saving May the way he did. When Peter enters the hospital, there is a woman sitting at the reception desk that is in red. It's implied that she is Mephesto in disguise, and he had a hand in saving May. Okay, but still this seems like a really weak solution. Also, wasn't it mentioned in Back In Black that May was essentially brain dead or had some serious brain trauma? Then how is restarting her heart going to have her back to normal at the start of BND?

Also, if Mephesto did help, then that contradicts the (somewhat juvenile) comment by the book's editor on CBR:

WORST. COMIC. EVER!
Second, the whole kids/marriage thing. MJ's justification for not getting married is that she doesn't want to have kids with him. She pretty much says, 'If you don't plan on having kids, there is no point in getting married', just in different (yet just as stupid) wording.

By the way, I imagine CBR is in bed with Quesada as they gave this shitty Spider-Man comic a high review.

What a great Q quote someone posted on the CBR thread (40 pages now)

We know what's going to come down the line, we know how the Mephisto thing happens, and I gotta sell comics. It's serialized storytelling. They just gotta suck it up.

Re: Spider-man 'One More Day' Thread - WARNING: NO Spoilers

Is that a real quote by Quesada? Wow.

I like serialized storytelling, but when a single issue feels like "part 78 in a 255 part story" not too many people will stick around for that stuff.

I mean, damn, 3 years later and they're still dealing with the Mephisto divorce?

If they wanted to take Spider-man back to his roots and make him more relatable to a younger audience why not just cancel the current Spidey stuff and start a brand new series in Marvel Adventures where Spider-man is still in Highschool.
The current storyline seems like Quesada wanted HIS Spider-man back. The single Spider-man who was an adult but still a free wheeling bachelor.

Re: Spider-man 'One More Day' Thread - WARNING: NO Spoilers

Alright, Part 3 of this mess hit stores today.

The woman in red w/red hair that I mentioned was probably Mephesto? Nope, that makes too much sense, she's actually working for the Kingpin. She tells Kingpin that May is recovering, and he tells the woman to kill May. They argue about it for a while.

MJ's Aunt Anna calls her and tells her she's hearing noises outside her house and is scared. MJ races to Aunt Anna's, only to find she is too late and someone has broken in. The man is still there about to kill Anna and MJ hits him over the head with a flower pot. The man, who is in a Luchadore style mask, quickly recovers and persues MJ. Ends up Kingpin sent him after MJ & Anna. He shoots at her, but she jumps a fence into a yard, not noticing the 'Beware of Dogs' sign.

A dog comes after her and the MAN WHO IS TRYING TO KILL HER SAVES HER FROM THE DOG. Then he remembers he is supposed to kill MJ so he says he's going to shoot her. However, another dog (remember, it said 'Dogs') goes after the masked man.

Back in the hospital, Peter finds out what's going on and goes to save MJ. Before doing it though, he grabs a random big guy (Who is obviously Spider-Man Editior Tom Brevoort) who's working in the hospital and asks him to stand gaurd for May. To convince the guy, HE SHOWS THE GUY HIS SPIDER-MAN COSTUME. The guy then gets all giddy and says he'll do it.

Now the masked man has MJ captured (didn't shoot her for some reason). Spidey swings in and saves her. He pulls the mask off the man, and its THE FAT ASS THAT LANDED ON PETER, CAUSING HIM TO MISS HIS WEDDING.

Peter realizes at this point that everyone knowing his identity is a danger to his whole family, so he goes to Dr. Strange for help. Stange says he can't help, but Peter calls him on it. He wants Strange to wipe his identity out of everyone's minds. He says he'll consider it and goes to the asteral plane to consult with Reed Richards and Tony Stark about it.

End.

I'll be back later with some scans, and of course, I'll return when part 4 is out.

The Current explanation for May being alive.

Apparently the hitman, who works for the Kingpin, is a dog lover...because he backhands MJ after he shot the dog that was about to attack her, the woman he was sent to kill...[facepalm]

Yep, Peter flashes his costume to Tom Brevoort.

Isn't that what Ultimate Spidey was supposed to be before that universe collapsed under the weight of it's own continuity?

I'll always have Spidey loves Mary Jane, I guess...

How are the sales of Spidey books these days? The only snippets I get of him are (were) in New Avengers.

They have steadily gone down since Brand New Day started.

The big problem here has been Quesada and his hot-shotting storylines. First, it was Peter revealing to the world that he is Spider-Man during the Civil War. That was a huge mistake and they knew it and then wanted to go back with the Brand New Day Crap. That's their second mistake, but instead of accepting that, they now go back with this One Moment in Time crap. Stupid storytelling in the past 3 years have ruined both Spider-Man and the Hulk.

As someone that read Spider-man religiously up until the Clone saga, these new stories sound like utter dreck. At this point an entire reboot of the character seems almost necessary.
