If you order now, when it comes out you'll get it free. If you wait, probably at some point they'll start charging--could be never, could be tomorrow. You pay the price it was when you place the order even if that's nothing. I've gotten a few ebook preorders where the price went up before it came out and never paid more (sometimes when the books from publishers that want to charge 12.99 first go up, they're quite a bit less).

Not sure what those are but I guess I'll add them to my collection of free books I never get around to reading.

Anyone tried the SOCIAL NETWORK feature of the new Kindle Software? Pretty Cool, you highlight text and it gives you an option to share on FB or Twitter.

On FB the book cover and title appear and it says XXXXX wanted to share this quote from his Kindle

"Whatever the highlighted text is"

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread

I've been trying to decide between the Nook and Kindle for a while and the refurbished price of $109.99 convinced me to go with the Kindle. People seem to be ordering it without reservations, so I thought I'd go for it.

A friend got me a nook for my birthday and I'm still playing around with it but so far so good. Has anyone tried the lend a book feature yet? Are there a lot of titles you can do this with?

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread

Got my refurbished Kindle yesterday and it was DOA - it wouldn't charge up or anything. Contacted customer service and they're over-nighting me a replacement. Hopefully this one works - I'm not sure if this one will be refurbished or not.

Gah! I've had my eye on the Nook for about 4 months now. Three days ago I ordered the refurb Kindle after seeing your post about them. Mine should be here next week.

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread

Just a heads up. I thought my Kindle was broken when I first got it a year ago. If you have problems, take off the back plate, hit the reset button (don't turn it on after), charge it fully, unplug it, and then turn it on. Ever since I did that, it's worked like a charm.

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread

I got the replacement today and it works fine. It's a new one, not a refurb, so I basically paid $109.99 for a new one. Now I just have to send the other one back with a prepaid label. Their customer service was great - didn't even question it or anything, just said they'd send a new one right away and I got it the next morning. So after a small hiccup, I'm happy with it.

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread

I wish they would lower the price on ebooks. I find myself still buying paperbacks with Amazons 4 for 3 at a better price then the 4 would be as ebooks.

I wish they would too. Unfortunately, the publishers do not see the light on ebooks, so a lot of their prices are outrageous. Amazon is kind enough to put a little note on those right below the price that says "This price was set by the publisher" so you know who to be annoyed with. And if you run into an ebook that costs more than the paperback version, and does NOT have the publisher tag by the price, drop a note to Amazon Customer Service -there's a contact link at the bottom of the page - and let them know politely that there is a discrepancy in prices. They'll usually lower the ebook price if they can.

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread

So kindle books are outselling hardcovers at Amazon. Good for them. I can't believe they've been selling kindles for 33 months already.

Got my refurb kindle today. I'd never know it was a refurb other than that's what I ordered. Looks brand new and works like a charm.

Article in the New York Post today & on the news on how Amazon announced that their ebook sales have now surpassed actual book sales. Also that kindle is still vastly outselling all the competitors.

Mine arrived yesterday, and it seems to be brand new. There is no indication anywhere in the packaging that it is refurbished. Is there any way to tell if it is brand new or not?

Well those are both a bit misleading. They announced that ebook sales have surpassed hardcover sales, not all book sales. And since I don't believe Amazon has ever released actual sales figures for the Kindle, I'm not sure how we can be sure it's vastly outselling all the competitors (although I certainly imagine that it is, at least within the dedicated eReader market).

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread

More and more I am really wanting to jump on the e-reader band wagon. I just spent 2 weeks in Mexico and would have killed to have been able to instantly download the sequel to the book I was reading but couldn't find locally.

Right now I am favoring a Kindle over a Nook but wondered if someone who owned one might be able to answer a question or correct me if I am reasoning incorrectly.

Question: The Nook is easier to put ebooks from sources other than Barnes & Noble on the device. Is this true? I know the Kindle lets you get free public domain books from Amazon. Can you buy an ebook from sites other than Amazon and get them onto the Kindle?

Basically I am wanting something small enough to easily carry with me. Nice e-ink screen (black and white is fine since I will be primarily reading text). Good prices on the actual ebooks. Good customer service. I do not have a Barnes and Nobles near me so checking out the books in-store can't happen.

I know all the Kindle books from Amazon include DRM... but how does that affect me as the end user? Isn't everything backed up in the cloud and accessible on my phone, computer, and Kindle?

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread

I don't claim to be the most knowledgeable, since I just got my Kindle2 International about 2 weeks ago, but I can offer what little knowledge I have (and someone feel free to correct anything I misinformed him about).

Any place you can get a .mobi file or PDF file book from you can put on the Kindle. I have used Amazon and Smashwords (indie authors) so far, but I know of several more. Baen webscriptions is very popular if you are into sci-fi and fantasy. Also, there is a program you can download called Calibre which you can use to convert different formats into .mobi to use on the Kindle.

I know all the Kindle books from Amazon include DRM... but how does that affect me as the end user? Isn't everything backed up in the cloud and accessible on my phone, computer, and Kindle?
Not all books from Amazon come DRM'd, I believe it is up to the publisher to choose to do so. As the end user, I guess it really doesn't effect you. Yes, stuff is backed up in the cloud, and you can also download a copy of the file to your PC. Also, that Calibre software I mentioned earlier (I think) can strip DRM, but I don't know if that's as shady as DVD copy protection and the like around here, so don't want to go any further on that.

In short, I think either would be a great choice for you. Check out www.mobileread.com if you haven't. The forums there are very useful. There is a Kindle specific forum, along with a Nook specific and a "which one for me" specific forum for users in the same situation as you.

It's also worth mentioning (it was mentioned above in this thread) that a week or two ago Amazon had refurbished K2 US models for $110. Can't beat that price if it ever comes back, but not the best choice if you want to use it for travelling outside the country. Good luck .

Re: The Official eBook & eReader Thread

I really want the new 3G Kindle. My wife bought me a K2 for Christmas and I really love it. The improvements seem fantastic, the new screen is the main strength but the new PDF features, the new font choices, and support for new characters, are great.

Pre-ordered the K3 WF and sold my K2i to my future mother-in-law. Can't beat that.
