It's the one to start with if you are not familiar with anime.

It depends on your tastes. I watched it last year and didn't care for it at all. But in all fairness I don't care for anime and went in with higher expectations based on what I'd read about the series. In spite of reviews raving about its originality, I felt that it was very derivative, ripping off many other films/series, and was just another "adult" anime series having many of the same issues that generally turns me off the genre. But I also know several people who love the series and re-watch it regularly.

If you've enjoyed the anime you've seen *and* like SF in general then you should at least give it a viewing. The current price is inexpensive enough and you could likely sell it used, should you not like it, for the current Amazon price.

**EDIT**
To add that you *must* watch this with the English dub track. I normally watch foreign films in the original language with subs but the dubbing work on Cowboy Bebop is absolutely superb. Quite possibly the best ever done. I watched a few episodes twice, once in the original language and the other with the English dub, and then didn't bother with the Japanese track again. It's that good.

I don't watch much anime but I like Cowboy Bebop. It's often compared to Firefly.

That frequent comparison is one of the things that attracted me to the series but, other than the theme song, I saw few similarities.

Part of the show's appeal is the "ripping off" other things. Each episode had it's own music style and theme, playing homage to different Sci-Fi shows or Bruce Lee movies. Personally I love the show; it's in my top 5 of all time and sits around #20 in IMDB's all time list.

My advice is get it, watch the dubbed version, and move up the volume on it it.

I think it's the "space Western" concept of the team roaming the galaxy on the outskirts of the law. There might be more than that, but I've only seen a handful of episodes of Bebop. I like them, so I need to binge the whole thing one of these days.

Cowboy Bebop is just about the worst introduction to anime for a Westerner. It was made with very Western sensibilities and ended up being far more popular in America than it ever was in Japan.

Anime and manga are really acquired tastes.

It seems like people are enthralled with it and consume it obsessively, or it will bore the shit out of you. I've tried a bit of the stuff and just can't get into it. I've seen Akira, Vampire Hunter D, Appleseed, Ghost in the Shell, Perfect Blue, Cowboy Bebop, Lain, and Neon Genesis Evangelion. And that was enough for me. I have no desire to watch more or revisit any of it.

Re: Amazon discounts and deals on Blu-ray

I've sampled a handful of anime series and not been enthralled by much of it, but Cowboy Bebop doesn't need to be an entry point to me. I just want something interesting to watch.

The Hellraiser Scarlet Box from Arrow 63.19, which is frustrating for me, since mine has already shipped.

Also, a bunch of Criterions (too many to list or link) are at 20.95. Includes "Mulholland Drive" and "Moonrise Kingdom".

The Before Trilogy is now down to $52.47. Not as cheap as the previous pre-order price, but it runs about $17 and change each for 3 Criterion SE's, so it might be worth buying.

Thanks for the heads up. Mine shipped too, but it bounced around a bit in the Amazon box and one of the corners got damaged. Assuming the new one comes in better shape, I'll return the damaged, more expensive one for a refund.

Re: Amazon discounts and deals on Blu-ray

I went ahead and ordered the Hellraiser Scarlet box set last night for $63.19. Thank God I did. It jumped back up to $78.99 today.

The set was delivered today. Very nice turnaround with my Prime Membership.

Anyways it's pretty expensive but a great looking box set and nice extras if you're a fan of the series.

It's the current standard USA issue. Good price. As mentioned by several of us before, the Canadian is THE one to get.

Re: Amazon discounts and deals on Blu-ray

Hmmm... I already have a *used* copy of that one that's missing all the schwag. I went ahead to get the extra stuff - in spite of already owning a *original* Woodstock patch (purchased it when then first came out way back in 1970 or so).

I have no idea what I'll do with the spare set since there's no longer anyone local that'll purchase such material for more than pennies on the dollar. Neither of my kids or any co-workers (they're all "kids") are interested in the festival, or its music.

Bitter Rice has a MSRP of $29.95, so waiting for the eventual Criterion half-price sale is the better deal. --Peter
