I didn't know about the Terminator 3 encoding problem. I thought it was only that it had sub-par audio. Anyway, I'm glad I returned Terminator and Terminator 3 to Target even though I had bought it for $5 each and plan to wait till a better version comes out on Blu.

I have it on HD-DVD, and will probably stick with that. But yes, Warner Home Video has confirmed that due to an apparent production error, the video on early pressings of this Blu-ray were encoded at 1080i (not 1080p as labeled on the box art). Warner does have a replacement program if you get a bad 1080i version. See related story for replacement program info if you opened yours and discovered it is 1080i: http://www.highdefdigest.com/news/show/1293
Like mattysemo stated, only the first few pressings were affected, and it was re-released with corrected 1080p video. There is a way to tell which one it is before purchasing or opening it. They have different UPC codes. The code for the 1080i version is 085391186304. The code for the newer 1080p version is 883929016938. Just tried to call the number in the Highdefdigest article but it says they're closed (even though the recording says their hours of operation are 7am-7pm PST???). I'll have to get this resolved! |

Terminator will likely have a re-release sometime in the next few years, but I doubt Terminator 3 will. At best, it will get tossed in a double-pack with Salvation.

Not if you pay a premium for the experience. |

Are all the special features playable with a regular BD player or are any of them in PAL? Thanks.
It goes without saying that the Sony disc is superior in every way to the awful Warner disc. |

Thanks from me as well. I actually received the 1080i version directly from the WB store just a few months ago, when all the stacked coupons were going on. I called and they are sending me out the corrected version.

The U.K. version of Terminator 3 was released by Sony. All of Sony's Blu-ray releases are region-free and completely playable on a Region A machine, including the extras. The U.S. division of Sony actually handles the encoding and preparing of discs for Sony releases globally, so even though T3 could not be released here by them, it might as well be a U.S. Blu-ray.
So yes, any sd extras are in NTSC. |
re: Amazon.com Discounts and Deals on Blu-ray
Its not a matter of PAL and NTSC for Blu-Ray, its the encoding MHZ, so you may have to be a little careful when purchasing some titles. There are some sites that list what titles are Region free, and which are locked, and what MHZ they are in-

I suspect that the SD extras are converted to HD, as opposed to being NTSC, since that would be the only way to make them region free.

PAL and NTSC are both analog standards, referring to refresh rate, resolution, and color scheme. While technically neither PAL and NTSC existed on either DVD or on BD, since DVD and BD may have video with the same combinations of refresh rate and resolution as NTSC and PAL, they are still used to refer to SD material that fits those specs. As WMAangel pointed out, consumers in European countries typically have multi-standard capable sets, so they have no problem playing the NTSC material on some BDs. However, sometimes the SD material is in PAL, and while Europeans again won't have any problems playing this material, in the US the PAL material may be unplayable. |

b A lot of them don't mention the special features, which, as mentioned, are still fairly frequently encoding in the format that won't play in a standard US player. |

But, as I stated you must do your research, because the i50 is a pain and more and more PAL blu's are using it- b |

Exactly that's why i stated the MHZ. I have not encountered 1 Region Free pal blu that i wasnt able to play the extra's on.

re: Amazon.com Discounts and Deals on Blu-ray
That's strange, even my crappy Sony Blu-Ray Player (one of the first ones) played PAL extras, are you sure the extra's werent 50MHZ?
B |
^I presume that they were. All I knew from reports was that the movie was region A, B, C and that the extras wouldn't play. And they didn't.
