I'm pretty thrilled about this. Everyone is whining too much.
We get a release in July - so we get the film on DVD in a timely manner, we get to see it again on our giant widescreen tvs over and over as soon as possible... AND there is no question as to whether or not the flick is getting a SE release down the line.
It's the best of both worlds. We're going to get an extras-packed release that is being worked on carefully and not rushed, and a barebones release within only a few months of the theatrical release.
What's the problem again?

There's no problem. It's just for a while there, nobody was sure an SE was in the pipeline. Since Prior has confirmed it, I'm a happy elephant.

Actually, I didn't think the DVD release of this was timely at all -- I think I saw back in early January? And it's still not out for another 6 weeks? There are plenty of movies released after it that are already on DVD. Still, if there is a trailer on the disc itself for an upcoming SE (as David Prior says), count me in for a rental. I've been waiting forever to see this for a second time!

This will probably be a blind buy for me. Also, I noticed on the Ebert & Roeper show "At the Movies" on tv late last night in which Roeper listed it in his top 5 movies of the year so far.

Just a quick note the DVD which is featureless has a preview for the Zodiac 2 disc director's cut SE which they say is coming in 2008. I think the studio realizes there may be an oscar play with the movie and so I'm sure we'll see the jam packed SE timed with that.

Great news indeed. The deleted material I've read about sounds very intriguing. And maybe they could finally say that it's "From the director of Se7en and Fight Club".
Also, if Paramount pushes for the Oscar campaign, Robert Downey Jr. and Jake Gyllenhaal require nominations. ESPECIALLY the former.

Great news. I'll just rent the movie for now, and buy the 2 disc whenever it hits stores.

Actually Troy will likely be the first HD double dip (current version and Director's cut in September), unless you count The Fifth Element's multiple releases. I don't know what specs will be on the HD, but I guess not much since the 2-discer isn't planned until '08. Even if they're 2 months behind the SD release.

Since my daughter was born just over two years ago, we have only been to two movies in the theater: Miami Vice and Zodiac. The moview weren't our first choice but the timing was right.
I loved Zodiac. Even grabbed the soundtrack. And last week, when I was at the grocery store, they had the DVD promo poster in the 'free' bin. You bet I grabbed it! It was in mint condition.
Looking forward to the release although I wish it had more features.

It's a move by the studio to make more money.
Everything was worked on "Carefully and not rushed" long before this dvd went to the presses.
You don't have to belive me, I can't tell you how I know, but trust me when I say it's from a source extremly close to the subject. Fincher didn't want two dvd releases. The studio wanted it. Fincher was pissed, but expected it.

Double/triple/quadruple dip for me. Whatever it takes. The 24th can't get here fast enough, bring on the bare bones edition. I'm all over any and all versions of this film. One of my favorite films of all-time.
