I'm glad to hear that the director's cut will be coming to HD, but man...I was already ticked when I thought I'd have to wait until September to get Zodiac...now I'll have to wait until 2008!!!! One of my favourite flicks this year so it'll be worth the wait...but it'll be tough.

Well, I don't rent movies - I usually only buy them - so since I'm waiting for the DC, which also happens to be in HD, I'll have to wait. I personally don't purchase standard dvds anymore, but in this case, even if I did, I would have to wait until 2008 - I was more expressing my frustration at Paramount trying to pull a screw job on the public instead of just delaying ALL releases until the DC was ready to go...

IMO if you are a fan of the movie you pick it up when it is released. If a new version/director cut comes out in the future you pick that one up also. Why debate it? If you buy it and don't like it you stay away from the future releases. No big deal...

If you guys are happy with Paramounts recent strategy of releasing the same movie in a better version a few months later and double dipping like crazy (flags of our fathers, babel, zodiac) then I'm happy for you...I just am not a fan of this... and the fact that they've been delaying HD versions until the second release is frustrating to me...but whatever.

^ I'm no fan of it. I wish the SE was ready to come out next week, but it's not. I waited for the SE of Flags of Our Fathers. It's rare for me to be this inpatient, but this film is so exceptional, I'm in for the double dip.

Wait, so is the HD release of the theatrical not coming out anymore? Last I heard It got delayed until September and they were also going to release an HD director's cut in 2008. I was just gonna rent the SD version next week to hold me over for the HD version, then double dip on the HD on 08'.

Well I took the plunge and ordered it on a blind-buy. Did not get a chance to watch it in the theaters but with all the good things I had been hearing about (plus I love Fincher's movies) I figured why not! Don't think I would have been able to wait for 08, so if I love it enough it will be worth the double dip. Maybe I can pawn of the original version on a friend when the 2-Disc version comes out.

Listen, the only way studios are going to stop with this practice of delaying releases/double dipping is if people like yourself just STOP obliging them.
I don't buy none of that horse hockey about them wanting to put the bare bones in stores for those that just want to see the film ASAP and delaying the SE so they can produce all those nifty extras we collectors enjoy.
I seem to remember a time when studios would have absolutely no problem releasing ONE DVD WITH extras included/Directors cuts and in a timely manner.
I for one will wait. I'm not made out of money. And buying the same movie twice isn't my idea of status or having the means. It just makes me feel like a mark.

I haven't seen Zodiac (I wanted to, but I never had the chance), but I want to blind buy the movie just for the DC's cover.

Anyone really trust the accuracy of this story? I watched my DVD today and then went online to a website that states the facts of the zodiac killer, and how Graysmith went out of his way to accuse someone (Lee) as being the killer, but none of it panned out.
And how a lot of the movie is "fictional" - based on what I read on this website.
Sort of makes me view the movie as just a "crime thriller", rather than a
"true crime" story...

I don't think Fincher intended this to be the final word on the case. Graysmith's books contain more than a few factual errors. Allen was a prime suspect and the film was about that particular investigation, however flawed.
I'm not sure 'Zodiac' would have been anymore effective if had focused on the other suspects or theories.
Whatever genre this falls into, I found it a thoroughly compelling film.
