Doom started the whole FPS craze

Well Wolfenstien3D wasn't even the first FSP game ever, so you could say it wasn't the start of the FPS genre. But Doom WAS the first *big* FPS game that other games tried to model themselves after.

I think as far as more recent ones. Mario64 was very groundbreaking. Also I think that new EA made pc game where it calls you at home, and IM's you and stuff is gonna be groundbreaking, and weird.

Double Dragon, first really popular side scrolling beat em up, I know Kung Fu was out before it but that was one player.

Mortal Kombat for bringing blood into a game and its popularity. There were other bloody games before that but I can't remember one as popular.

Street Fighter II. Combos, and a giant list of moves, the original 2d one on one fighter.

Virtua Fighter. Three dimensional fighting with a wonderful combat system.

Gee see a pattern in my games?

Yes, you ignored every genre besides fighters.

Ok then since I ignored every genre other than fighters:

NHL Hockey for Genesis, great gameplay, all of the NHL teams(at the time, even included the Sharks), and true crowd reactions, boos, chears, first sports title that I can remember that had this kind of reaction.

NHLPA Hockey 93, all of the players, stats tracking, ability to edit lines, you name it.

Joe Montana Sportstalk Football. It was very robotic but it was a cool attempt at something that is now standard in sports games.

Lakers vs Celtics, multiple platforms. Signature moves from players, great reactions, awsome game.

Resident Evil. Corny acting but totally enveloping gameplay.

Super Mario Bros. Would we have Sonic, or any other cute little character that goes around the screen jumping on things collecting coins/rings without the original? I think not.

Pac Man. The game of games, have it for my Neo-Geo Pocket actually.

Tetris. How many little puzzle games have we had cause of this monster. I remember Tengen releasing there version, and then Nintendo cause Tengen didn't actually have the rights.

Simons Quest. A mix of rpg, action, and horror, I don't think we would have seen Resident Evil without this bad boy.

Everquest deserves a bow in the MMORPG world - I don't recall any other game that you could make a living from. (By selling items gotten in game on ebay for real world cash).

Seganet - for allowing console gamers the option of playing games on the 'net.

Deer Hunter - not sure if this is the name of the original product, but it opened up a whole new market.

Age of Empires II: Age of Kings + Conquistadors
This is a personal addition - I HATED Age of Empires but bought AOE II on the strength of all the good press it has been/is getting. After a while I began to see the subtleties in the system and appreciate just how good it (and the original AOE) are.

Civilization: Sid Meier knows games - just about anything he creates goes for good gaming fun. Alpha Centauri might be more sophisticated, but Civilization is the jewel in the crown. Definitely a groundbreaker (and I'm almost embarrassed to admit just how much history I learned from playing the game).

Games to come :

Doom 3 with the whole GeForce 3 system
Unreal using its new engine http://www.epicgames.com/unrealengine/xbdemo2.jpg
Anarchy Online could be the next big MMORPG from what I hear, major improvments made in gameplay compared to other games.

There's a difference between a groundbreaking game and a game that has good graphics. None of the games you mention are groundbreaking, but simply retreads in the FPS genre.

Space War (mainframe version)

Adventure (original Zork)

Pong

Space Invaders

Asteroids

Pac-Man

Donkey Kong

Pitfall

Ultima

Karateka/ Kung Fu Master

Super Mario Bros.

Mario 3D

These games all defined new genres
of video games, and their influence is still
being felt today.

I think you've all forgotten one of the best RPGs:
Dragon Warrior! The first game that I recall that had the alternate Battle system. And then Dragon Warrior 2 with the multiple player/party gameplay. I'm waiting for Dragon Warrior 7 to be released on the PSX.

Yes, thanks for the correction!

Though Karetaka was pretty groundbreaking in it's own way...

My votes for PC would have to go to Half-Life, Deus Ex, and Fallout (both 1& 2). I would also like to say that Fallout:Tactics looks to be amazing also!

Myst had incredible graphics and story and redefined the adventure game genre, hence it was groundbreaking.
