Pong:)
Mario Bros.
Wolfenstein3D/Doom
Street Fighter II
Virtua Fighter
Mario64

hmm that's all I can think of. I wouldn't call Dragons' Lair "ground-breaking"...it had, uhh, no gameplay.

Gallant Pig 02-26-01 10:49 PM

Dragon's Lair was groundbreaking, it launched a whole genre of arcade games.

Pitfall

Perfect Dark has raised the intelligence of video game A.I.
Madden Football series
Street Fighter
Mario games

I remember back in the day that something said that "Out of this World" featured a little CD inside the cartridge. I am not sure if that is true. Oh yeah, don't forget "The 7th Hour" for people actually being in games, "Myst", and "Final Fantasy 7" for getting RPGs a bigger audience. But the biggest of course is "Pong."

Those games were very groundbreaking. Pong, well, for obvious reasons, Mario started it ALL, Doom started the whole FPS craze, SFII gave the fighter genre the boost it needed and was the first really popular one, Virtua Fighter started the whole 3D fighting genre, and Mario64 was the first true 3D platformer. All extremely groundbreaking, I'd say.

what about on Computers ? groundbreaking games on computers

tha_dvd_man 02-27-01 01:36 AM

Doom and C&C is all I can think of.

That's crazy talk!

daledude 02-27-01 07:33 AM

Pacman was the first game I was really addicted to. I don't know if I would call it groundbreaking.

The Mario series was great for 2d platforms, and Mario 64 for 3d platforms.

Street Fighter II for fighting. I just pluged in the old SuperNES version and it's still alot of fun today.

For the computer, Master of Orion was a big strategy game. Wolfenstein/Doom introduced fps, but Quake make the 3d fps popular. I'm not sure, but if Warcraft wasn't the first real time strategy game it's one of the best for it's time.

What is C&C ?

AgtFox 02-27-01 10:27 AM

BigDaddy,

C&C=Command and Conquer, although I would not call this a groundbreaking game. It's precursor was Dune II, which would be THE groundbreaking RTS game for computers. Dune II and C&C were made by they same company.

jeffdsmith 02-27-01 11:21 AM

Mini CD in cart. Nope.

PC Groundbreakers? FPS & RTS generes are eally all th PC has offered up. Sure you have net team play, but even that was available to Famcom(NES in JApan) to some extent. PC's have always offered truely little "ground breakers" PC's tend to be more finessers if you follow that.

CreatureX 02-27-01 01:38 PM

Super Mario Bros. and practically anything Shigeru Miyamoto had a hand in creating. Also Herzog Zwei for the Sega Genesis which I believe was the first RTS game...

edstein 02-27-01 02:35 PM

Ultima I
Sonic I

Tuan Jim 02-27-01 03:33 PM

If you're talking 3d games -- survival horror or whatnot on any system, you have to remember "Alone in the Dark" 1-3 (with 4 on the way and looking great). These were some awesome graphics, with great gameplay. Pretty freaky too -- more than RE2 IMO.

Yeah, Dune 2 was the original great RTS. And for RPG, you'd probably go back to Wastelands, the original, and the Ultima series.

Wastelands as the original RPG. I am hardly an expert, but were there any RPG's before Wasteland (which is perhaps one of my favorites btw). I would have thought Bards Tale was before Wasteland.

I was thinking more along the lines of Wasteland (as an original game -- vs. Fallout which is set in the same area). I am aware that there were others first. How bout the original Zork? I know the Ultima series was pretty old too.

X-Com: UFO Defence.

Crizzar 02-27-01 04:51 PM

I would call Half-Life a groundbreaker. It didn't create the genre, but it certainly re-defined it and gave the industry something to look up to.

THX 1138 02-27-01 04:55 PM

Legend of Zelda
Metroid

eXcentris 02-27-01 05:00 PM

Myst and Tetris.

tha_dvd_man 02-27-01 05:12 PM

For a game to be "ground-breaking" it must be extremely innovative, creative and either break new ground for a genre or create a new and successful one. Myst is not ground-breaking.
