You joke but I have to assume both Sony and MS are paying VERY close attention to the response to Nintendo's pricing. Both hardware and software. Especially MS, who's rumored to be very close to announcing a new handheld.

Now, the percentage of people who don’t want MKW may be pretty low, but there’s plenty to choose from on launch day. Plus, the MKW bundle may not be available in abundant quantities; when it comes time to pre-order, options may be limited after the first few hours.
Again, checking that list, do you think there is anybody who wants to get a Switch 2 at launch but doesn't want to get MKW along with it? Certainly nothing else on that list feels like something anyone has to play on Launch Day, let alone something worth buying an expensive new system for.
I agree that bundles may not be available in stores, but I was referring to the Nintendo pre-order option where you are given a choice of either the Switch 2 for 450 or the Switch 2 + MKW bundle for 500.

Unless you're someone who only buys Nintendo consoles and never had the chance to play any of the cross-platform games before.

I was expecting $399 for the system. I was disappointed by $449, but not shocked. The price was a bummer, but not a deal breaker. Now, ditching the OLED screen, that feels like a deal breaker to me. Can't believe they went that route.

I don't want to give Nintendo any passes for going backwards, but if they're using the same panel as the 8" PS Portal, it's a pretty nice display.

The 449 is a little daunting, but the big thing to me is software prices, particularly since we know they don't have significant sales on most 1st party titles.

My son said something that made me do a spit take: “Dad, you know how ARMS was a launch title? For the Switch 2 they’re giving us NO LEGS (Drag & Drive).”

🤣🤣🤣

… also, if you asked me in March, I would have said I was expecting $400 as the launch price, but knowing the ever looming “T”-word was being thrown around, I was not surprised at the $450 price.

The higher game prices were expected too, but we’ve talked about that before.

I mean I thought they would go to 70 as the standard. 80 for digital and 90 for physical is insane with no "Greatest Hits" line.

Yes. It’s not complicated.

Further, even accounting for the majority of people who DO want MKW, there’s a big chunk (bigger than on other platforms) who would prefer to buy the game as a physical cart (assuming it’s not a new “game-key card”), not a download, and will pay the premium to do so, especially at launch.

And were also a good bit less expensive than the competition, which is no longer the case. I'm sure the Switch 2 will sell well, especially among early adopters, but I really don't think there's any chance of this successor having the cultural impact of its predecessor at this price.

And it might get even worse with the gargantuan tariffs imposed on Vietnam, where Nintendo has a lot of their production. Reversing the usual trends, now might be the best possible time to buy a Switch 2.

Battery life is 2 to 6.5 hours, apparently with the low end being about half of that of the original Switch. This is one trade-off of running components at higher specs.

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25

As I've mentioned before, in the last 8 years I’ve purchased a launch Switch, two OLED Switches, and four Switch Lites (basically one per family member). Between 2017 and 2024, I had four kids graduate and go off to college and our family gaming dwindled. While all 7 of us were here we played all the time.

Note: The only console I purchased more of than that was the DS line.

Now that it's me, my wife, and one kid (who's a sophomore in high school), I do not see myself buying more than one Switch 2. I also don't see myself playing it not-docked, so the battery is a non-issue for me. The only game I played consistently in handheld mode was Animal Crossing.

I will buy a Switch 2 with MKW packed in on launch day. I may upgrade Mario Party Jamboree and Kirby and the Forgotten Land.

That will be it for a while.

Is it bad that I still don't fully trust the Switch 2 to run this Yakuza 0 director's cut? I know nothing about the specs, and am sure they have optimized it and all that, but I just have a feeling it will be off compared to even the default Yakuza 0 on PS4.

I'll give them this, they really changed things up with Mario Kart. Glad that it's something new. Donkey Kong is also a welcome surprise, but of course they're ignoring any of the Rare contributions. Surprised they didn't also sell a Wavebird replica alongside the Gamecube controller, people would have eaten that up.

I am because I don't want the game digitally. I like having the carts to save on the limited console storage space. Plus Switch carts are fun to collect.

re: Nintendo Switch 2 - 06/05/25

Believe me, it stinks that the price of games is going up, but in all fairness, games have been $59.99 (excluding special editions, etc.) for at least a decade, maybe more. I think we all knew at some point there was bound to be a price hike sooner or later.

For those that are going to pre-order the Switch 2 next week, what do you think will be the easiest routes to grab one? I already pre-registered with Nintendo, but i'm not going to just go with that. GameStop is going to take pre-orders on the 9th, but I don't have 8 to 10, maybe more hours to stand in line in hopes of getting one. Amazon maybe?

If it can manage games like Elden Ring and Hogwarts, Yakuza 0 should be a breeze to run.

Is Amazon selling Nintendo consoles again? You can't buy a current Switch from Amazon directly, I don't think.

That's valid. I haven't run games like that on Switch, but it sounds like things should be good. I'm still not convinced on a day one purchase yet, but Yakuza 0, DK, MK would be a solid set of games to start with.

And as for the price of games, I am still pissed about spending $79.99 on Clayfighter 63 1/3 back in '97. That was barely worth $5.

Well you're not going to enjoy the eventual move to game-key then... or the apparent 10 dollar "tax" on physical.

I will always argue this, but why do game prices have to go up? Do physical media prices have to go up because the price of making movies have gone up?

so, the current Pro controller will be compatible with the new Switch, sans the C button?

Just using the Switch as an example. It released on March 3rd, 2017. That was over eight years ago. Just look at everything that has gone up in price in the past eight years. I don't like it at all, but looking at how much it cost to develop and market a game. It's really surprising that the price of games has stayed the same for this long.

I didn't know about the history with Nintendo and Amazon, so I can go ahead and count them out.
