On the easiest difficult setting, this game is still challenging (for me) but in a good way, just right really. Put in a good 6-7 hours this weekend and am still loving it. It's a massive game, almost too much gear/loot to choose from, brutal fight scenes, nice mission variety. The grapple gun is great, as is the glider. Got a horse (which I was really wanting), met some great allies. Highly recommended so far.

That's cool to hear.
I will still wait for a sale, but nice to know it's not crushingly hard on Easy. I don't enjoy very hard games.

Yeah, good review uteotw. i’ll wait. i got so much backlog plus being "souls" like just puts me off. just not my genre. no harm, no foul. after the Elden Ring debacle of '22, im not going through that again.
plus, I’m just loving Ghost of Tsushima so much.

I've seen a couple of these sort of...Stick with it, Don't throw in the Towel articles, comments, videos of saying the game does get better yet still the Story and Dialogue is still the weakest part....if Ghost of Tsushima is not happening for awhile, I'll probably circle back on this....

I'm really digging it so far, but the game is too complex for it's own good IMO. I feel like early on every minute you are getting a pop up on screen explaining some kind of new system and it is overwhelming. And thank God for the easy difficulty mode, the parry window seems to be a bit looser on easy. Will report back later if my opinion changes, but the game is badass so far.

With you 100%, and I can guarantee it's not at all crushingly hard on "Dawn" difficulty (which sounds better). You can even change settings to where you get more health per refill, use less Ki, etc.

I'm playing it in Japanese with English subtitles, which is awesome, and I also LOVE the auto-pickup setting (i.e. no need to press triangle or whatever to pick up loot, just walk/ride over it).

I most definitely do not, with the caveats noted above (difficulty level/settings). Practically the only way I do is that timing is important re parries, but not really in any other way. For example, there are lots of checkpoints, and you can save whenever you want, oh and you can also pause your game(!). I put it way closer to Ghost, and if you liked that I really think you'll like this a lot.

You seem really hung up on this "Souls-like" thing. I've never played Ghosts, but I imagine it is just as much or more of a Ghosts-like as it is a Souls-like.

i just don't want to get burned like i did with Elden Ring. i just hated the gameplay in that. Dark Souls III too, i believe. if it's Ghost of Tsushima like than that is something i'm down for.

Could you explain how you think GoT is any different than what you consider a souls game? The gameplay is almost identical. Or is Souls just a word you use now to describe a game that you find too difficult?

you don't go back and pick up your essence or whatever when you die. the difficulty is not crushingly difficult. the combat is intuitive and fun. the "souls" games (ER, DS3,etc.) to me are not in any way like previously described or GoT.

Re: Rise of the Ronin —> 3/22/24 —> PS5

This does have a mechanic where when you die, you need to go back and land a critical hit on whoever killed you to recover something. I honestly don't even understand what exactly you are recovering at this point or how much of an effect it has if you don't, because as I mentioned there is a LOT going on in this game mechanics-wise that I don't even understand a lot of it yet.

I don't need a game that complicated. Give me GoT2 in the Fall and I'll be happy.

So that all just boils down to you finding Fromsoft games too hard. Maybe just say you don't want to play difficult games and stop using Souls to describe anything you don't like. Saying combat in their games is unintuitive is just blatantly wrong. It's some of the most refined combat in any game.

Also, have fun with some of the later duals in GoT. Cause they get just as difficult, if not more-so than some Fromsoft bosses.

I vaguely know this is true but likewise have no idea what you need to "recover" and frankly I just ignore it and it's had no impact on my gameplay. Whatever it is, it's nothing like Souls where you lose everything.

Not liking the look/aesthetic of the world here - just feels kinda bland and makes me not want to explore.
Seems like the focus is more on the sword-fights, which I kinda don't care about.
Also, I hate the "souls-like" element devs feel like they need to tack on to games - just makes things a pain in the ass unnecessarily.

Yeah, probably not for you then because I think it's the combat that really brings all the boys to the yard in this one.

I'm fucking loving this game, it's hard to put it down to play other stuff in my rotation because it is so addicting.
