so the original XBOX came out in 2001, i believe, figured that gen was a good starting point rather than all time, though it maybe.

for me Remedy's Control. i loved the shit out of the game and played it to death. don't think 100%, but did a lot including both dlcs.this hooked me in an instant and i was addicted to gaming again. loved everything about it. i didn't even know they let you cheat like that, which seems weird, but i didn't know until i finished long after.

so the past 22 years, favorite game/gaming experience?

I've been watching Severance lately (Apple TV+) and the way they communicate with the board, as well as other craziness, gives me some serious Control vibes. Great game.

Dark Souls. It is the greatest game ever made IMO.

20 years is a lot of ground to cover. My first thought was to go with something story driven like Bioshock or Life is Strange, the kind of game you can't stop thinking about weeks (or even years) after you're long done with it. Or what about more recently? I'd consider God of War (2016) to be the top game of last gen (this coming from someone who was lukewarm on the franchise prior). Then I was thinking older... right at our cutoff and then I have my answer.

Halo

There is no other game or franchise that comes close for me. Story, characters, epic single player campaign, amazing score, non-traditional final level (no boss fight), unrivaled multiplayer which spawned lan parties and plenty of great memories.

Ha. Forgot about Halo. The reason I got an Xbox 360 (first non-Nintendo console after Gamecube). That’s my fav for so many different reasons.

Probably either Rock Band 2 or Red Dead Redemption. That latter scratched every itch for me as a western and open sandbox fan, but the former was something my wife and I played together and with friends for years. During the pandemic, we broke out the instruments and had fun all over again. Plus we had a massive song library, the random plays were a hoot.
