Ive never used console ports to charge my controllers, I use a wall outlet. Its nice nowadays because I have one cord (usb c) that will charge my phone, iPad, PS5 controller, etc.

On the flipside I can't imagine why anyone would want to mess with wires in 2021. Controllers have been wireless for nearly 20 years now, why cling to a vestige of past generations?

I also clung to the AA batteries (Xbox 360) are superior to lithium far longer than I should have. Sometimes you gotta move forward.

Docks all the way:

Docks are still "wired" to power. The only difference I see is placing the controller on a dock vs. placing a cord into a port on the controller. That extra second or 2 of effort saved just doesn't seem worth the cost or deskspace to me, but... different strokes!

I wish controllers stuck with the AA batteries. I use rechargeable AA/AAA batteries and those would last FOREVER in a 360 controller. PS4/PS5 controllers need a charge after just several hours, whereas I could go for weeks using rechargeable AA's. Going from a 40 hour battery life to a 6-8 battery life is not "moving forward" in my eyes.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

AA batteries are superior though because you can replace them yourself, and if you want rechargeable you have that option as well.

Though I don't think it's fair to compare the PS4/PS5 controller life with the old controllers... if they used AA I'm not sure the longevity would be better, it's just that the controllers do a lot more things now (especially the dumb PS4 controller with the always on light)

Now if you had wirelessly charging wireless controllers...

Regarding the PS4 controller, I use mine on PC using the program DS4Windows, which allows you to turn off the “always on light”, and I can tell you that the battery life is barely improved, and is still shit compared to the 360 controller with rechargeable AA’s. Taking the light out of the equation, I would think the PS4 and 360 controllers would have similar power consumption, unless rumble was somehow more efficient on the 360.

As somebody that doesn't like tall tower cases, I'd pass, but that's some nice ingenuity.

Reminds me of the old PC Engine and Genesis models that were sold in the form factor of desktop computers.

Still can't find a goddamned PS5 at retail to save my life - yes, I've tried all methods numerous times.

Yea...I can verify that....I'm using a old 360 Controller for PC Gaming. I've probably got close to 16 hours on the current batteries and still going strong. My PS4 Controllers don't last 4-5 now and even with the light at medium....the added bonus, starts to die just take off battery pack, change batteries (use re-chargeables) and you're right back..

PS5 Bundles will be available to Gamestop Pro ($15/ year membership) members starting at 11 am edt on their website. They open it up to non- members a bit later.

My question would be how old are the PS4 controllers? I said it before but that's the downside of having non-easily-replaceable rechargeable batteries, they're going to wear down over time no matter what.

Though now I'm seeing a bunch of people had drift issues with their PS5 controllers too. Ugh.

It's not bad yet but it's noticeable, especially in menus that use a floating reticle to navigate (Destiny, Outriders, etc.).

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I have no clue or idea to what Sony's Thinking and Rational behind all this...We're Not Going To Big Video Game Events Anymore....skipped E3...second year in-a-row and now Gamescon despite other big names going.. It's almost a bit of...arrogance and we're just too good-for-everyone-else so we're just going to do our own shows....

I don't know. If they have a blowout presentation, they'll get blasted for not having PS5 units available to purchase. It's kind of a Catch 22 until the supply can catch up to the demand.

Well, they are big enough to do their own show and have people attend, especially when it's going to be virtual anyway. Same for Nintendo. We'll see what Sony does when conventions are back to normal.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

Ratchet and Clank : Rift Apart in Fidelity mode has some really fantastic visuals to it - the clarity, textures, raytracing, etc; is fantastic -- I did end up switching to Performance RT mode though, a solid 60 fps trumps the other stuff.

I'm not loving the game yet, it isn't that it's bad, but the combat plays almost exactly like Returnal, but doesn't offer the responsiveness, excitement, or overall satisfaction of that title's battles. I also find the worlds kind of clunky to navigate. Still, bang up job in making the city scapes so busy and the in-game graphics are a huge step up over what passes for animation half the time these days.

I wish retaillers would do a reservation/queue system for the PS5 like Valve is doing with their Steamdeck (albeit with better execution).

I just finally go around to Astro's Playroom. Holy crap this is fun. Brilliant demo of the controller, too.

Yeah it’s fun. Tons of Playstation Easter eggs as well. Too bad it’s so short.

Is Valve selling the steam deck in retail outlets? I didn’t think so which is why they have that reservation list and Sony doesn’t. Retailers actually want you checking back in regularly so I understand why they just don’t take unlimited preorders and make a huge queue.
