Granted, I was playing Cyberpunk 2077 last night, I had no trouble with the network.

I didn't know about this until now. Been playing a ton of Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade, however. So no real surprise I was unaware.

For Plus games only or something else?

I was still able to play Star Wars Outlaws during the outage.

Do you have it on disc? Nothing downloaded worked for me. Neither games I paid for or games from PSN+. Tried both ps5 and ps4 games. Disc games weren’t effected.

That sounds terrifying to me.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I think there’s an option you can select to allow a specific console get around it. Problem was, turning that option on required a connection as well. So us who didn’t have it on already were SOL.

The system couldn’t do the check to verify you own a game, which is why only discs worked.

Yes, it's on disc. I didn't try anything else. Now I wish that I had checked.

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I think (at least for digital games) it has to do with your console needing to be set as your primary or whatever (I forget the exact word).

Ah, that's probably it.
from a website :

Setting your PS5 as your primary console allows you to share your games and PlayStation Plus benefits with other users on that console, and play your games offline. Here’s how to do it:

Steps:
  1. Go to Settings: From the PS5 home screen, select the Settings icon in the top right corner (it looks like a gear).
  2. Select Users and Accounts: Scroll down and select Users and Accounts.
  3. Go to Other: In the Users and Accounts menu, select Other.
  4. Select Console Sharing and Offline Play: Choose Console Sharing and Offline Play.
  5. Enable Console Sharing and Offline Play: Select Enable. A confirmation message will appear.
  6. Confirm: Select OK to confirm and activate Console Sharing and Offline Play. This will set your PS5 as your primary console.
Important Notes:
  • One Primary Console: You can only have one PS5 as your primary console at a time.
  • Automatic Primary: The first PS5 you sign in to is usually automatically set as your primary console.
  • Disabling: If you want to change your primary PS5, you’ll need to disable this setting on your current primary console first.
  • Offline Play: Setting your PS5 as primary enables offline play for your account on that console, even if you’re not connected to the internet.
  • Game Sharing: Other users on your primary PS5 can access and play your digital games, even if you’re not logged in.
  • PS Plus Sharing: Other users on your primary PS5 can also enjoy your PlayStation Plus benefits, such as online multiplayer and monthly games.

Ah, I was going to ask this, I thought the primary console didn't need to "check in"

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

The crazy thing is I was able to play Infinity Nikki throughout the outage even though the game is digital only and requires Internet access. From what I read online the game uses their own servers so not affected by the PSN outage other than you couldn't use the PSN store to buy stuff.

I thought the f2p stuff doesn't need a PSN sub, so presumably that has no tie ins to whatever servers were down?

I couldn’t play Pubg or Fortnite and both of those are F2P.

Ah, you probably sign into PSN for these games (though I have no idea what's different about Infinity Nikki).

It also updates like twice a week and not through the normal PS5 dashboard like every other game update. When you start the game and it auto-log's in like every few days it will update through the game title screen and doesn't show up as a download on the dashboard like regular updates do.

No wonder I wasn't affected. Seems like only digital folks were. I have discs.

I couldn't play Sniper Elite or Stellar Blade, the two campaigns I'm in the middle of. I have a disc version PS5 but those were download only. Still no explanation? That doesn't help, and I 100% agree with this:

Re: PlayStation 5 - 11/12/20

I have literally been waiting for something like this for three generations of video game consoles. All the functionality of a fight stick -- 6 face buttons, gated 8-way stick, but in a wireless controller. Pre-ordered.

is this only good for fighting games? I mean I know you can use for other games but seems suited for fight games. is that true? what's the big deal about this one exactly?

It's designed like a fight stick. Fight sticks have 6 or 8 face buttons and a stick that moves in 8 locked directions. Gives much more accurate and precise input to fighting games. I wouldn't use it for like an action game or 3D platformer -- the regular Dual Sense that you and I both have in abundance would be better for that. And I have a really nice fight stick from PS4 days, but it's a hassle to hook up and sit on my lap. And I like a wireless controller with my man-cave set up. So like I said, this is a nice solution for fighting games on the PS5.
