Hey, you guys might finally get some relief from me whining about not being able to buy a PS5... I finally got an invite/access for a PS5 through PSN for tomorrow! For those of you that have gone this route, what are my chances? How quick do they go? I should be able to log in first thing.

(though having a newborn - 3 weeks today - I haven't had time to play even one minute of a videogame, much less set up a new system and transfer all my PS4 games to a PS5)

One less thing to worry about : setting up a PS5 is very easy (I've done it five times if you count factory resets) and if your PS4 games are on an external hard drive, you can just plug that into your new PS5.

I received that invite too. Only problem is I'm going to be at work when it starts. PlayStation websites are banned on the internet at work. I'm going to have to use my phone to get it. I hope they one PS5 disc version for me when I log on.

When I did it early Nov, took about 20 min in the que to get into the site. Bought the PS5 and was shipped to me in about a week. IF you get the direct log in you should have a really good chance of scoring one. Good Luck.

I have TON of digital (and some disc-based) games on my PS4 - will those all transfer easily and be playable on the PS5? (I assume for the on-disc games, I need to insert the disc).

Yes they will essentally all be playable on the PS5. If they are currently on the PS4 internal HDD, you should use your time now to transfer almost everything to an external HDD and connect it to your PS4. They will play exactly the same but moving them to the new console will be dead simple (and you will need every GB of free SSD space for new PS5 games on the new system).

I'm pretty sure the site says this, but make sure you don't close the window once you're in the queue. My browser locked up on me, so I had to force close it. When I reclicked the link in my email, it told me that I was already in the queue in another window, and to go back to that window. So I ended up missing out. Haven't gotten another invite yet.

And the 360 faceplates sold like crap and were discontinued.

Lots of people are excited to give Sony 55 more dollars to turn their consoles back to black (and have two huge white pieces of plastic leftover) though. I'd maybe be tempted by like a special edition themed one but I'd suspect it would go up to 70 or more.

How they sold is not really relevant. The point is Microsoft was selling a way smaller item for a little less than half almost 15 years ago. I was expecting them to be closer to $100 but I also expected that everyone here was going to complain about the price no matter what. I'll be grabbing a pink set myself.

I'd argue it is relevant because they didn't sell at that price. It'd be one thing if Microsoft and Sony sold them at these prices because that's how much they cost to manufacture, but let's be honest, this is almost pure profit for them and the only question is how the market will bear it. But hey, I won't begrudge people buying them.

I don't have an external HDD. Is it easy to transfer from the PS4 to PS5 or should I just plan on reinstalling all my games?

Brilliant move by Sony if they planned all along to make the PS5 white knowing people preferred black so they they could make some side coin selling new plates.

IIRC it takes a while (and you can't do anything else while it's copying), but it should move everything ok. The external drive, as stated earlier, is mainly because you probably want your PS4 games on an external drive and not taking up precious space on the PS5 drive.

If that were the plan all along, to make money, they would have sold the plates right away instead of waiting 15 months. Clearly they designed the system with the ability to change plates in mind. That said, I'm glad they're finally getting around to selling first-party ones. I would have liked some Sony-branded ones, R&C, Kratos, Aloy usits would be amazing. Still I will probably spring for that purple model and controller

External hard drives are pretty basic and similar. I would just buy a 2TB drive like this . It's $60.
You can also move PS5 games in and out of storage on this same drive (but you can't play PS5 games off it, only PS4 games). So if you want a bigger drive to store digital games in bulk, you could get a 4GB drive for . For most people I would imagine a 2TB drive is big enough.

Thanks! I think I'll go with the 2 TB drive if I'm lucky enough to get a PS5 tomorrow. I usually delete games once I beat them anyways.

Also, are the ps4 load times about the same when you're playing off the external drive or will I need to move them to the SSD to load faster?

Yes, they will load faster on the SSD, but in my opinion the faster loading aren't worth the space that those PS4 games take up. You only have like 660 GB of space on the included PS5 SSD and that can fill up in 6-8 games.

I'll probably swap games back and forth then. The faster load times are a huge plus for me.

Just be aware, it takes forever to transfer stuff back and forth (at least on my PS5).
