Re: Playstation Classic -- With 20 preloaded games
I just found out about this and I preordered it via GameStop. Amazon and Best Buy wouldn't let me preorder it so I was left with WalMart and GameStop. I went GameStop since I know people were having problems with WalMart preorders on Nintendo classics last year.

Yeah, but PSN... as dumb as it is, Nintendo's policy of making you rebuy VC games with every new console release means that I rarely bought VC games from them, whereas I have a pretty large library of PS1/2 games on PSN, most of which have been dirt cheap, plus I can play on my Vita (which I realize is a rarity at this point). Unless this has some pretty obscure games (which I doubt), that greatly lessens the appeal of this, to me at least.

I just hope the games hold up, looks wise. NES and SNES Classic editions had all time classic games (not all of them, nobody cares about that Kirby compilation).
But if it’s first gen PS1 games, those will look fucking rough. But there’s still a ton that can be included. I’m hoping for Um Jammer Lammy, but that’s a long shot.

For some reason I get the feeling Pandemonium will be on it, because it seems to show up on every platform as one of the first PS One games.
Bushido Blade and Brave Fencer Musashiden would be killer. Or Intelligent Qube.
Syphon Filter will probably be on it.

The first Silent Hill game on the PS1 is still one of the best gaming experiences I have ever had. My ex wife was pregnant with our daughter at the time and couldn't sleep a lot at night for some reason so we would stay up late playing in total darkness and it was creepy and we had so much fun taking turns playing and being creeped out. It was the only video game she ever really played.

Oh man, I forgot about Syphon Filter. Shame Sony let that series die.

We already know the answer since they've released tons of these games on the PS3. They do not. These early 3D games for the most part look like shit now days. I use to love original Silent Hill but it is pretty much unplayable at this point. The 2D stuff looks fine but I'm going to assume these 20 titles will be mostly 3D games.

it was how long before I could go to a store and get an NES classic? It took less effort and money to find an old NES on Ebay.

PS3 BC introduced all kinds of video problems if anyone wants to look that up on Youtube. So the actual PS1/PS2 games looked MUCH better on their original consoles.

If the commercial is any indication then no the graphics do not hold up. I just got from first PlayStation system two weeks ago so the nostalgia is a no go for me anyway.

I think PS1 holds up just fine. Its output was always cleaner and higher-poly than the N64's. THAT's the machine I think people are in for a rude awakening with when they get the Classic they're all asking for. Those graphics.. with all the "fog".. blur.. and characters/objects looking like they were built with three to five polygons total - were the ones that looked rough even in their own time.

I'd think a consumer likes the idea of a one stop, easy to use shop for playing a bunch of old games they knew and loved, so the price tag is worth it. As someone that bought the NES and SNES, and might keep a preorder for this, I don't want to bid or look for games i want to play, deal with cartridges/discs, memory cards, video inputs, etc.
I'm a "core" gamer and don't want to deal with that stuff, so I can only imagine the average consumer doesn't want to either.

It's all title specific. Banjo Kazoo and Mario 64 look pretty solid still, Crash Bandicoot looks fine still.
OTOH GoldenEye and Turok look pretty bad, as do Vagrant Story and Tomb Raider.

Can't get too excited about this one. I managed to hang onto a good batch of PS1 games that we can still play, but I still like the idea of these companies paying respects to their heritage.
And I have to disagree about the N64 graphics aging well. We went through a big "audit" of all our game systems a few years ago, putting them up on the big screen to see how well they look and the N64 looked pretty awful with all the fog and smoothing. That's one classic system I won't mind skipping.

I'd rather have a remaster or remake of The Legend of Dragoon, one of the PS1 era classic jRPGs that never was heard from again, than this PSClassic. Smh, why did they opt not to include the analog sticks on the controllers? Guess none of the games they're gonna have use them... I can name quite a few PS1 games that needed them though... and I had analog sticks on my PS1 controllers back in the late 90s. =P

It's probably borderline unplayable now but I loved Die Hard Trilogy back in the day, terrible Samuel L Jackson impersonation and all.

I'd take a Sega Saturn classic (if it existed) over a PS1 classic, because the Saturn had more classic 2D games that still look good and better stand the test of time.

And you're definitely talking about harder stuff to find in the used market there. Problem is, Saturn emulation is a total bitch - just not happening on the chipsets going into these mini consoles - and Sega has an abysmal track record of licensing out its retro systems to AtGames, etc.
