Kudos to Nintendo on this. They took something that is practically as old school as it gets and made it not just feel new but completely unique. Even the 2d side scrolled parts are impressive at times (scrolling along the side of a castle tower, etc; )

It continually doesn't feel like Mario while being as Mario as it gets. I think I've gotten used to games being nothing more than new coats of paint.

The 2D stuff is really cool. I thought it might just be a gimmick in one of the worlds but it seems like part of the game so far. It works really seamlessly and isn’t jarring going from 3D to 2D and then back.

It feels a bit strange to blow up taxis in a metro area with a tank in a Mario game, but it's fun.

The more I think about the Being John Malkovich-ness of Cappy the more weirded out I get, but yeah definitely fun.

A good skill to practice is the jump/dive/cap jump combo:

Run and jump (triple, long, whatever), throw cappy (direction+Y), then immediately dive (LZ+Y). The dive should land you onto the cap for a cap jump in the direction you threw the cap.

I can’t get over how good this is. It’s far exceeded my expectations. I’m up to sixty three moons now.

Agreed. I'm at like 120. I was giddy when I ran into Captain Toad and it played the Captain Toad music (I really love Captain Toad).

Enjoying the game so far. But I can't stand the motion controls (jerking the Pro controller to the side to do the spin hat move). Is there any way to turn those off?

I’ve been playing with the Joy Cons and haven’t had any issues whatsoever. I’ve actually been surprised at how fluid the motion controls are.

I've been playing primarily in hand held mode, but I vastly prefer using the joycons when I have it docked.

I think there's an option to turn off motion controls... I'm surprised you didn't check that first

I'm using the pro controller have played for almost 15 hours (238 moons) and have had to shake the pro controller maybe 2-3 times.

Re: Super Mario Odyssey (Oct 27,2017)- Official Thread

Got to put in a few hours with this. I love it. I really like the collectibles and hidden areas in the maps, making them fun to go back to. There's one moon I can't seem to get in the very first level, though. It's high up above one of the hat houses just on the other side of the first (small) bridge. It looks like it's the right height where you can take over a frog and jump up and get it... but it's not. It's just a BIT higher than that. So how do you get to it? I'm not talking about the one that's way out in the fog, where you use a frog to jump on top of some really high boxes to get to another high box to get to the moon.

Anyway, aside from that, I've completed the first three levels, aside from all the collectibles which I'll go back for. This is excellent, and it makes me want to find a way to go back and play Mario 64.

Re: Super Mario Odyssey (Oct 27,2017)- Official Thread

My only complaints are that the levels seem kind of limited in a way I don't particularly like (everything being a floating island, which is par for the Mario franchise, but it just seems kind of lazy by today's standards), and the world map's simplistic menu setup makes the game seem a little less than cohesive.

But I'm having a ton of fun with it and those are minor.

Just finished the main game with 270 moons. Besides going back and getting collectibles (one of my favorite parts of these games) it looks like a bunch of post-game content opened up also.

YouTube answered this for me: "To jump high as a frog shake the controller instead of pressing the jump button."

Of course!

I will say in some ways sometimes I feel like the moons are almost too easy to get. Maybe I’ve just been getting the easier ones though. It might also be because there are far more moons to collect and maybe some are just easy to obtain. Playing Super Mario 64 though some of those stars were a bitch to collect.

The moons can significantly vary in difficulty.

I mean I’ve gotten quite a few (I think close to about seventy). Most I haven’t had much of an issue with.

I'm way behind all you guys on moon count, haha. I like that some are right out in the open, but without a clear path to them, makes you think about ways to get there. I just made it to New Donk City, and it's been really fun so far.

Well there's around 900 of them so you've gotten less than 10% of them. I'm going back through areas now cleaning up and there are quite a few that are either difficult to get or difficult to even find. I'm at 360.

Ah shit I didn’t realize there were that many.

Is there something in game that tells you how many out of the possible moons available you've gotten per level? I know it shows you with the dotted lines how many you need to get to the next world.

I believe if you go to the map by pressing the - button that there’s an option for lists and each world has a list of moons you’ve gotten as well as blank spots of ones left to get.
