Well, I just played the first few levels of DKC Tropical Freeze. Let me just say : THAT is exactly what I bought a Switch for -- not for downgraded versions of FPS games I bought years ago, now in potentially portable versions, but rather a FANTASTIC character-driven platformer. It's utterly charming. It looks great with bright color palate and nicely detailed characters with terrific animations. It sounds amazing with an infectious bouncy jazz soundtrack. It plays like a dream with spot-on controls.
After being totally disappointed with DKC Returns on the Wii, this is a complete 180. What a cute, fun and entertaining game. So glad I picked it up. Surprised that I never heard any raves about this game on the WiiU (like I had with Splatton and Bayonetta 2). This game is wonderful so far!

It's regarded pretty highly among platforming fans. I wanted to like it on the Wii U but the difficulty later on was too much for me and I stopped having fun. I played through world 1 today with the Funky Kong mode and quite enjoyed it.

I can't remember if there was much discussion about it here, but most of the other gaming sites/forums I frequent went nuts over it, calling it a frontrunner for one of the greatest platformers of all time.

It took me a while to warm up to it (and, admittedly, the Wii U version was the first Donkey Kong game I'd played since...y'know, Jr. however many decades ago). There was one part where I just could not progress, and I got so frustrated that I gave up on the game entirely. About a year later, I started plowing through all the games I'd started and hadn't finished. I have no idea which part I'd gotten stuck on since I made it through fine the first time back through, and I had a blast with the game after that. Maybe I just wasn't in the right mood when the game first came out?

Yeah, it's easily in the top 5 Wii U games. The only thing that sucks is that it gets pretty difficult in the later levels.

I have zero qualms about using Funky Kong -- espeically since the Switch doesn't even have Achievements -rolleyes-. Haven't used him yet but I'm sure I will.

And yeah, I was never following the WIiU games closely but seriously I had never heard almost anything about this game. Thought it was a remake of the Wii game that I hated (but guess that was a 3DS game instead).

We just purchased a Switch last week but just now getting around to setting it up. I am having issues getting it to connect online. I have been reading that it seems to be a major problem with the Switch. I tried the reboot method but still no luck. It's saying that "the network device may be using unsupported security settings". Any ideas on how to fix this?

Edit: I was finally able to get it to work.

I'm on the 4th world and even with using Funky Kong I've died 50 or so times.

The appreciated the easiness of the game, mostly because of the amount of traveling I've been doing since it came out.

It was nice to have a fun and relaxing game that pretty much killed all the waiting & traveling time I've had to endure through a variety of airports.

Actually I was wrong though, the new character is an easier mode as someone else pointed out.

Thanks anyway. I think my eight old has decided on Kirby Star Allies instead of DK.

Online plans for Switch: https://www.nintendo.com/switch/online-service/

TL;DR: $34.99/year(family) or $19.99 (solo), 20 NES games with more planned, cloud saves, other stuff.

Mike86 05-07-18 08:42 PM

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

No need for a family plan. I’ll gladly pay the $19.99 per year for the online service. The NES games make it worth at least that to me.

Woops. Misinformation in tweet. $34.99 is family plan. $19.99 for solo plan.

Well, I like it. Certainly better than Gold which we hardly take advantage of.

Cloud saves! At long last.

I'm okay with my Switch not being able to distinguish between me and my wife, so $19.99 a year it is!

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

I'll probably pay just for cloud saves and the NES games. Don't really play multiplayer on the Switch.

This is gonna upset someone, but IDGAF; Blade Strangers is a fighting game currently slated for release on the Switch and PS4. The game features characters from Code of Princess and Cave Story (plus a handful of others I am not familiar with). Nicalis has been tweeting out combo videos for the last months, and even the game's intro...

Today Gunvolt was announced!

The game is looking pretty solid, and gives me more reasons to purchase a fightstick.

Virtual Console Is Not Coming To Switch, Nintendo Says

https://kotaku.com/virtual-console-i...ays-1825848253

In the wake of news that the Nintendo Switch’s online subscription service will include a Netflix-like library of NES games, fans have been wondering: Is the Virtual Console coming back? The answer to that question is no, according to Nintendo.

“There are currently no plans to bring classic games together under the Virtual Console banner as has been done on other Nintendo systems,” a Nintendo spokesperson told Kotaku in an e-mail late last night.

“There are a variety of ways in which classic games from Nintendo and other publishers are made available on Nintendo Switch, such as through Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online, Nintendo eShop or as packaged collections,” the Nintendo spokesperson said. “Nintendo Entertainment System – Nintendo Switch Online will provide a fun new way to experience classic NES games that will be different from the Virtual Console service, thanks to enhancements such as added online play, voice chat via the Nintendo Switch Online app and the various play modes of Nintendo Switch.”
Kind of just sounds like they won't use the virtual console branding anymore, but they'll keep them locked behind other paid services like the NES games coming to their online service?

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

It's certainly not because of some technological limitation or anything, they want you to either have subscriptions or believe there's enough value in what they add that you consider it a new game and not a port (which we all want to be cheap).

Also, it avoids the whole conversation of "i bought this on VC on the Wii and the WiiU and the DS, why can't you just unify my library so I don't have to buy it again."

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch

Part of me doesn’t mind not having a true Virtual Console but yet for some games I’d like to just own them permanently. I know that I’ll pay to keep the online service active since it’s only $20 per year but what happens when we’ve moved on from the Switch and to the next console? Does Nintendo still support the service for the Switch if we still want to use it there or do they just kill the service after a certain point? Granted I have other Nintendo devices where I own the classic games I want but it’d be nice to have the option to keep them permanently on Switch too.

20 bucks but probably no cable, certainly no proprietary hdmi cable which is part of the cost of the regular stand.

Big news today...

And this looks like a great Puzzle Fighter Clone...

Tonight at 11pm (not sure if Eastern or Pacific) an open beta for BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle will be available in the Switch eShop.

I'm sure that will sell well in Japan, but that looks like a slightly better-looking 3DS game.

Shame that they didn't bring MH World to the Switch. I would have bought that.

It looks that way because that's exactly what it is.
