If you ever get two consoles and buy a lot of digital games I'm not explaining how that works again, btw. :) |
Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
Speaking of switch deals, Civilization (digital) has been on sale a lot in the past, but it's 2.99 at various retailers (Best Buy, Gamestop, Target, etc.). Why is this significant? Apparently you can get 300 gold points from purchasing it (from the retail 59.99 price) making it free. It doesn't have the expansions but you can buy all the expansions on a discount right now if you want anyway.

The Nintendo Switch has now been on the market without a successor console longer than any other Nintendo home console:
The Nintendo Switch snatches the NES' record as the company's longest-lasting console, with 2,688 days without a successor |

The Switch doesn't have that option, so it's longevity is largely a testament to the developers working to optimize newer games for the hardware, although they're definitely hitting the hardware's limits. |

Some great stuff shown at the Direct (although most of it being multiplatform I will of course play on the PS5), here's stuff I'm most interested in:
Neva (from the creators of Gris a game I loved) Coffee Talk Tokyo Sea of Stars – Throes of the Watchmaker PowerWash Simulator: The Shrek Special Pack Peglin (never heard of this but as a Peggle fan I'll give it a shot) Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars (finally get a release date March 2025) Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake |

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
I've never played Pikmin. I'll pick up Pikmin 1 and 2 for $30 to try it out.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
Yeah, I have 3 and 4. But on sale, sure I'll grab the first two as well. Might not enjoy the mechanics going backward though.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
Pikmin 1&2 are awesome. Yeah it might be a bit more simplified but the core gameplay is definitely there. It is kind of strange how Nintendo prices their rereleases. Seems like they are experimenting with what the market will tolerate.
Tempted to pick up Mario Maker 2 as a digital release. I already have it on cartridge but hardly play it because I'm lazy. lol. Maybe I should just give up on game preservation and just go all digital....I don't know. I still have trust issues with Nintendo when it comes to digital formats. |
Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
Ok. So I’m getting the Switch. And 7 games, 1 is a download. Does this use WiFi to connect to internet and do I need care about storage space if most games are disc? And, do I have to subscribe to their service? Thanks in advance.
|
Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
You can buy a standard microSD card to store downloaded games on. You can download off of your home Wifi.
You don't need their Online service unless you want to play games online. There is a tiny bit of on-board storage, but very little. And a microSD card is dirt cheap. Physical games are on their own microSD card, not a disc. |
Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
So, if I got the online subscription it’s only good for online games? What if I bought a digital download game, can I download it to system? If I want to download nes games do I need the subscription? Lastly, is the microSD something I can just attach to outside of console, meaning I don’t have to open it up like PS5? Thanks Deck!
|
Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
Yes the Nintendo Online subscription grants access to NES and SNES games. Maybe Game Boy games as well? Not sure. There's an upgraded version with N64 games and GBA games as well. Also gives you access to Smash Beos, Mario Kart 8 and Animal Crossing DLC passes. I don't think it's worth the extra price.
You can download any purchased game whenever from your library. The microSD card is just a tiny memory card you put into a slot, like in a digital camera. |

Thanks for all Deck. I think I’m ready to pull the trigger.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
As the official Nintendo licensed ones are 1/8 that size, I'd say yes.
