I got Super Smash Bros and I’m so lost. I’m not good at fighting games in general but is there a trick to winning?

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
I think I'd played a grand total of 20 min of Smash on GameCube, and promptly turned it off and returned it to EB Games. I bought this new one against my better judgement, mostly due to FOMO, I guess, and with very low expectations.
I love it. I watched and read quite a few tutorials online to wrap my head around the basics before starting. I began with Mario, since word is he's the best all around character. Once I understood most of the main concepts, I started messing around in Training with the other characters. I only have maybe 20 characters unlocked at this point. I'm mainly using Samus and Simon now. It is still overwhelming quite a lot of the times. I went ahead and turned items off in my matches because, coupled with the some of the more dynamic stages, they add just too much chaos. I'd say do some research, watch some YouTube tutorials, and don't hesitate to modify match conditions to fit your expertise. |

I’m not that great at it either necessarily. Basically the movesets are at least pretty easy to get down (although I haven’t done many Final Smashes yet) and don’t require you to learn any crazy button combinations which I like. I think a lot of it is choosing the proper fighter for battles and just finding who you’re good with (I like Kirby quite a bit).

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
In a weird way, Youtube is essential because the game teaches you nothing, and even that nothing is hidden behind endless menus. Like if you go to the help pages, because you can map buttons it won't even tell you what button to press, it'll say something like "to jump, press the jump button." To a newbie, which one is the jump button?
It's easy enough to pick up and play and mash buttons against a human opponent of the same caliber, but even the adventure mode will have you searching up youtube real quick. |
Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
So I finally subscribed to Nintendo Online since my kids opened Smash. Wow it's terrible. Like how do you get friends in a room without having some other device to communicate with them to tell them the room is open? You have a friend list, you can see if they're online, but you can't talk to them or play with them in any meaningful way unless you call them up.
But hey, NES games that I'll never play, cool! |

For $20 a year you can’t go wrong.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
I probably know the answer to this because it’s Nintendo, but for Smash, there is no way to play local multiplayer and access two profiles stored on the same Switch, right?

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
Other than the "free" games, Nintendo's online service is pretty much a wasted opportunity. Having to use your cell to chat with others is just plain stupid.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
The free games is literally the only reason I pay for PlayStation plus or Xbox live so doing it with Nintendo for cheaper doesn't bother me.

for those of you saying that Nintendo online isn't a problem because hey, it's cheap; have you tried matchmaking with friends in Smash? Or does that just not interest you at all? |

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
I paid it just for cloud saves.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
I really don’t think the online service is that bad for $20 a year. Could be better, but it’s also still relatively new.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
As a reminder, if you bought a physical copy of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, be sure to redeem the gold coins sometime in the next couple weeks. They'll email you a code within a few days to redeem the Piranha Plant DLC for free as soon as it's available. It's not a part of the Fighter Pass.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
Yep, already got the code for mine!

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
Thanks for the heads up. I got the email sent on the 31st but could have easily missed it.

Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
So after playing Smash Bros more, I have decided a few things:
1. It’s super fun. The amount of nostalgia is amazing. It’s making me love my Switch again. 2. It’s the most frustrating game I ever played. I honestly almost threw my controller and I haven’t done that since I was 10. 3. The computer almost never fails to get back to the stage when knocked off, sometimes doing six or seven jumps to avoid defeat. 4. The computers smash gauge charges way faster than yours. Always. 5. You will fall off the stage. A lot. Often. Did I mention a lot? 6. I will never play online. Ever. No interest. 7. I will never be any good. I play and spam buttons and go the same attacks with hardly any shielding. I tried learning tips and after seeing that I have to spot dodge, tech, buffer, air dodge, wall cling, etc. I decided fuck it. 8. The game is fun. |
Re: Nintendo Switch: Building a New Generation of Hardware from Scratch
I still don't know how they make it back on the stage. Anytime I fall off I can jump like once in the air and that's it. So I end up dying often that way.

I think someone mentioned earlier in here or the smash thread that they got some smash pros to tweak the UI, and it shows, the UI is much harder than previous games. Also on the higher levels the UI definitely "cheats" and it's more about tricking the UI than going toe to toe, but that's almost par for the course on fighting games. |

I'll be picking up the season pass if these remaining characters turn out to be true
https://m.ign.com/articles/2019/01/0...ortedly-leaked Also, do we not have a Smash Bros thread? |

Also, do we not have a Smash Bros thread? Super Mario Odyssey Zelda: Breath of the Wild Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 Metroid Prime 4 Ms. Splosion Man The last two only have 1 or 2 posts in them. |
