Can we officially name this generation the remaster generation? Jesus.
I'll take sequels over remasters. Is the market really there for all these re-dos? Once I play a game, I am basically done with it never to revisit with just a few minor exceptions (Halo). Do that many people go back and replay the same games again? Unless you missed them the first time, I just don't see the point on most games. |
Re: The Official E3 Thread of Xbox One Superiority - June 16-18, 2015
Nope. I tried to go back and play the Halo games and couldn't make it 30 minutes without nodding off. And that stands true for a multitude of games. But I do in general like classic gaming.
But really we haven't had that many remasters, there are just so few new titles that it really stands out. And most are for series' that are continuing (I assume there will be more Borderlands, Halo and God of War games. Amongst others.) |

I didn't use my PS3 much for gaming. So remastered versions of The Last of Us, God of War and Uncharted are appreciated. Xbox 360 was the preferred platform in many regions last year, and so with the PS4 being the dominant console now, it's a whole new audience. I never played Mirror's Edge either. A lot of people didn't. Hence why it wasn't really a smash hit. Also, there are games I'd play again in a heartbeat if they were remastered. I'll buy Mass Effect 1-3 again on day one. Burnout Paradise. The first few Assassin Creed games (through Brotherhood). Dead Space 1-2. |
Re: The Official E3 Thread of Xbox One Superiority - June 16-18, 2015
In lieu of backwards-compatibility with these consoles, remasters are the only way to really preserve them going forward if no alternative is presented (like Steam or Origin or GOG) and you don't want to resort to piracy and emulation.
If a game was good in 2005, why can't it be good in 2015? Now excuse me while I get back to Wing Commander and Tie Fighter while I clear my plate for Mega Man Legacy soon. |
Re: The Official E3 Thread of Xbox One Superiority - June 16-18, 2015
And they are doing work on these games to make them look and run better. I loved Saints Row 4 but that game had some serious performance issues on consoles. The new version runs much better, and so that's the one I'd want to play going forward.

Dark Souls 2 runs at a solid 60fps and 1080p on the PS4, and runs in 1080p on the Xbox One (not the case on the 360/PS2) Uncharted is 3 games in one, running at a higher resolution and presumably better framerate. Halo MCC has remastered versions of most of its content and is like 5 games in one. I think stuff like Far Cry 3 should be redone moreso than what is. That was a fun game hampered but an atrocious framerate on the Xbox 360 / PS 3. |
Re: The Official E3 Thread of Xbox One Superiority - June 16-18, 2015
There are some really great games on the PS2 I kind of wish be remaster on PS4. Case in points The Champions of Norrath. Can't tell you how many times I played this game to death. The ants tunnel and the vampire castle were mine favorite places to fight.

I wouldn't lump Ratchet and Clank (which is somewhere in between a remake and a reboot) with the remasters, personally.
As far out of left field a comment as can be: I was reading a "best of NES" list that mentioned Nintendo liked Crystalis enough to license it from SNK to make their own Gameboy Color remake a decade after the original release. I want them to do that again but for, you know, the Wii U. I would absolutely kill for a plot infused Zelda-esque post apocalyptic action-RPG right now that didn't move at an iceberg's pace  I'd also take it as a Bastard!! game that played like Bloodborne. That is all. |
Re: The Official E3 Thread of Xbox One Superiority - June 16-18, 2015
I didn't think Mirror's Edge was a remaster either. It sounded like they were making a new game in the series, just not a sequel to the last game (that I did actually finish and enjoy).

I'm with those who are tired of remasters in general. Don't get me wrong, I loved GTA5, TLoU, Uncharted 2, Saints Row 4, the original Resident Evils, the Halo series and so on and so forth. But my gaming time is fairly limited these days and I have no desire to spend 10-20 (or more) hours on a game I've already beaten, when I've got a backlog of games I've yet to experience for the first time. That said, they're nice for people who missed a title the first time around. For example, with Bloodborne being the first From Software game I've played through, I'm glad that I can pick up a comprehensive version of Dark Souls 2 to play through now. But I have zero interest in revisiting games I've already played.

I don't have a problem with remasters done right, but I have a problem with the influx of remasters from games from the last generation; especially those that only give you a single game at full retail price.
Despite its (still on-going) problems, Halo: The Master Chief Collection is a fantastic concept. All four games run in 1080p/60, two of the games are playable in both their original and "remastered" editions, and the multiplayer aspect can jump in-and-out of each game with all multiplayer maps and modes included. I want more remasters like that. Borderlands: The Handsome Jack Collection was good, but I still don't grasp why 2K/Gearbox didn't throw in the first game as all three games use the same engine. |

This might have been on Major Nelson's podcast right around when the collection launched back in March. Is that true? I don't know. |

They don't. In fact there was an interview to Randy Pitchford (after the PAX South one) where he said that originally it was going to just be BL2 ported because BL1 used a different (or different enough) engine. But during the port, the company doing it found that the engine for the Pre-Sequel was close enough that it would only take a minute additional investment to get it to work.

While being a single collection, the games are individual files on the Xbox One and PS4. They could've easily ported the PC edition of BL1, had it hit 1080p/60, and called it a day. The only difference between the Xbox One/PS4 editions of the game compared to PC/PS3/360 is the split-screen co-op. |

I still don't understand why we didn't get a remastered FC3. I stopped playing on 360 because it was so clunky. I want a reason to go back to it.
Also weird that the two big powerhouses, Ubisoft and EA, aren't on the remaster train. Maybe they figured most of the target audience would just wait for (and buy) Project CARS instead? |
Re: The Official E3 Thread of Xbox One Superiority - June 16-18, 2015
Just because the Borderlands games might all use Unreal Engine 3 doesn't mean there weren't enough modifications between game releases that would make it a bigger pain to port the first game. Unless you're a programmer at Gearbox, blanket statements about whether the first game could have easily been added really has no bearing.
