I knew not reading the article would bite me in the ass
I haven't paid attention to how bitcoin payments work, the later half of that explanation mentions being unable to hide behind a VPN though so i'm unsure if your real name and info is out there.

I saw this link on another site. I'm serious when I say that I won't feel an ounce of sympathy if any harm comes to these assholes:

The more I think about it the more I'm glad that it is a bunch of bratty kids doing it than people stealing credit card numbers and sensitive information that can be used for identity theft. And with the North Korea incident this stuff is potentially an international concern.
They should still be punished for it but its naive to put all the blame on them when the alternative is expecting a bunch of socially awkward teenagers to be polite about online security and quality of service.
These companies should be well-protected against a bunch of nerds AND all the worse entities out there. It was annoying that they interrupted everyone's gaming service but a lot of good will probably legitimately come from them exposing how vulnerable these companies are.

Lock 'em up and give 'em a record. I didn't destroy property or engage in illegal things as a teen, nor did my friends. Just blaming it on a few awkward years is shortsighted when there are plenty of things that could occupy a teenager's time.

If the guy is 22 then he is obviously not a teen and needs to be planked by a new roommate.

I mean, they called in a bomb threat on a plane and successfully got it grounded just because a Sony exec was on it. Not only did they bring two video game services to their knees for a very long period of time, but they killed their online stores on some of the most critical days of the year. It's hard to imagine the losses from this not totalling in the millions. They knew full well what they're doing, they snicker at the result of what they've inflicted on countless people, and they should be punished severely.

Once again it bears to question...just where the hell are the parents? I'm sure these "kids" spend about 80% of their time looking at computer screens behind closed doors with a lot of computer equipment. how many times have we seen where "kids" have done something really bad like school shooting and the parents were shocked, clueless and totally unaware.

Just because the doors of a bank can be blown off and all the money stolen then the robbers shouldn't be entirely held accountable for the theft? What these guys are basically attempting to say, but it is bullshit, is that because something can happen means it isn't truly their fault when it does.

So these guys DDoSed a couple video game services and called in a bomb threat. That sucks and they should go to prison, but I'm not sure how you think getting raped on a regular basis is a proportional punishment.

What exactly is the crime committed with regards to DDoS attacks? Since it's not a "hack" specifically and not stealing anything.

The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (the “CFAA”) prohibits a person from “knowingly caus[ing] the transmission of a program, information code, or command, and as a result of such conduct, intentionally causes damages without authorization to a protected computer” (see 18 U.S.C. § 1030(a)(5)(A)). While broadly worded, DDoS can be classified as transmission of a “program, information code, or command”. Damage is defined as “any impairment to the integrity or availability of data, a program, a system, or information” under 18 U.S.C. § 1030(e)(8).

Presumably victims can appeal to the country of origin? Many countries have laws that accommodate this sort of thing. Some, like the UK, are geared specifically towards DDoS attacks, as opposed to others where it's more of an interpretation.
Because of the whole "distributed" part of the DDoS thing, pinning down the origin can be difficult-to-impossible. The attention whores in Lizard Squad just made it easy.
