PC Gaming Thread

Re: PC Gaming Thread
I just recently built a new gaming PC. It's been many years but lately my consoles have been collecting dust and gaming on a laptop wasn't ideal. I ended up tossing around $850 at a box. Went with the fastest i5 that was just released (4690), a msi version of the radeon 290, 8 gigs of cheap 1600mhz ram, and a power supply big enough to go dual card if needed and cost effective later (doubtful). So far it plays almost everything I throw at it 60+fps in ultra in 1080p. I wasn't quite sold on a 4GB video card but the 290 offered a great bang for your buck price point and games like modded skyrim require more than 2 gigs.
I did a lot of research and the $800-$1000 range is one hell of a sweet spot right now.
*games like Day Z that aren't optimized not so much, but no set up currently does

Found this amusing: http://www.pcgamer.com/review/planes...orment-review/
They bring back old reviews from time to time, the comments section is a giant sarcastic post now since everybody there remembers... they gave Dragon Age 2 a higher score.

Looking for some advice on a minor upgrade - I'm currently running an older Intel i3 dual core CPU and a Radeon R7 260 GPU... thinking of upgrading to an GeForce GTX 760, but wondering if I should upgrade the CPU first. I can only do one at this moment (but will do the other by the end of the year).
Would I see a performance boost with a new GPU with that processor?

Quick answer: Always go the GPU upgrade.
What games are you playing?
What games you want to play?
Resolution?
Etc.
For gaming I don't think we will see any major breakthrough in CPUs for a long time. They have already been maxed for some time.

I also run Titanfall and Metro Last Light. Nothing super new, though I've got my eyes on Dead Rising 3 later this year.
I've got 8 gigs of RAM along with the i3 processor... not sure a quad core would add much as I use this strictly for gaming on my plasma TV (720p). I'll look into the GPU upgrade. Thanks!

And... if you are playing at 720p, and plan to be playing at that resolution for a long time, I'm not sure if the videocard upgrade will show so much difference. I mean you should see some difference, but not that big compared to 1080p or above.

At 720P, I actually wonder if a CPU upgrade to a quad core i5 would be more beneficial.
At least for Skyrim...

Yeah, you're actually asking about one of the few situations where it's tough to say which would be better.

I think it's neat that not only is Wing Commander III free on Origin (https://www.origin.com/en-us/store/b...andard-edition), but that they have a bunch of classic games on their website now like Ultima, other Wing Commanders, Crusader, Dungeon Keeper, etc.
Granted they're all things you can grab off gog.com, but its nice to see them advertised.

Even thought I hated Origin initially, I still never thought of EA is being so despicable
Meanwhile, Activision has a teaser site up for Sierra. I hope this means bringing back some of the old franchises, but I imagine it will be something dumber then that

Anyone else own Street Fight IV in Steam? For some reason mine is now listed as Ultra Street Fighter IV, but I know for a fact I didn't pay for the upgrade.

I'm starting to think those random "PC is actually winning right now" comments from game devs might be true:
Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain, Ground Zeroes coming to Steam:

bout time the series made the jump.

I read the other day that NBA 2K15 is confirmed to use the next gen engine opposed to the previous gen, so hopefully that port is good. Since I haven't picked up a PS4 or XBox yet, I might actually give the PC version a shot this year.

Re: PC Gaming Thread
Anyone has experience with a VGA cooler? I think it's too soon to replace my AMD 7950 videocard . So I'm exploring VGA coolers but there aren't a lot of options. Somehow I remembered more options.
