re: PS4 Release Thread: Kill Launch App #Driveclub due October 2014!!!

You can turn off the controller. Hold down the PS button and it's in one of the options.

Turning off the controller is just a few button presses. Hold down PS button and follow 2 prompts.

PS4 will either get a firmware for the PS3 blu tooth (better than IR IMO) remote or will get its own in short order, but for now, the PS3 absolutely dominates every other console (including Xbox One) for multimedia. It takes most video/audio formats via USB, plays most disks, streams like a champ, has had the best version of Netflix forever, etc.

I've hard a third-party bluetooth remote on order for months. This should have been ready at launch IMHO.

It's kind of annoying that the controller always has to be on. Maybe I'm missing that option to do so, but I can't find it. It's very easy to turn off the controller for the Xbox One.
So there's no PS4 remote control i can use to control netflix?

I have a feeling this would have been a very short game if not for the decision to make Knack so fragile that two hits kills him. I hate the upgrade collection system as it takes forever to collect enough stuff to actually be useful.
Also the voice of knack is all wrong. He looks like Animal from the Muppets and talks like Dennis Haysbert in an Allstate commercial. It's almost comical how wrong it/he sounds. I don't like the look of the game -- not the graphics, where are cartoony but okay, but rather the art style which looks off and ugly. I'm up to Chapter 4 and my hands hurt and I don't really want to go back.
I have zero interest in the story, which drops it considerably below Ryse in my book.
Can't believe this is done by the same guy who did R&C. Those games were amazingly fun and funny. This is neither.
Can't argue with this after playing it. It's annoying how easy it is to die in that game.

I agree. Multimedia just wasn't their focus. Yet.

If that's the short term trade off for a sleek and fast UI, I'll give them the benefit of the doubt for now, especially after the PS3 was so good at all that stuff.

Not yet, but the PS3 blu-tooth remote is phenomenal, and I would expect something similar in fairly short order.

What are you guys doing in Netflix that you need something other than the controller for? Maybe I'm weird, but all I ever need to do is the occasional pause, which is simply pressing the x button. I could maybe understand if we were still in the wired controller era, but I just don't get what is so bad about using the controller for Netflix.
I have only used Netflix on PS4 maybe once or twice, but the quality on the PS3 version was always better than on the 360 for some reason from my experiences for the record.

The controller is pretty awkward to use with just one hand.

If you are married, have kids, you need a remote.

If you have a newer CEC enabled TV, you might find this useful:

Does the phone app work to control the PS4 once you link them together on the same network? I haven't tried it yet.

On the Xbox One, it's only one prompt. Just saying.

Everything else I own is IR compatible; the technology is very good. And it's one less stupid controller I'd want to buy. The PSN app doesn't work well at all. If it did, I wouldn't care. The 360 had Rhapsody as well, so that was a plus that I thought would carry over but hasn't yet. I have a subscription to Rhapsody, so either once that expires I'm going with the music service or either the One or PS4, whichever has the better services by the end of the year. In the meantime I can use my internet connected receiver, but it's kind of a pain but doable.

Ding ding. That's so true. Alot of times i just go on to watch something. Just alot easier using a remote. I never had the PS3, so i can't compare how netflix is with the 360. But i take you guys word for it.

Now if they only release a new SSX for PS4/ONE. Then i'll be a happy camper.
I heard MLB: The Show is a great game. So i'm looking forward to that.

I have a PS3 remote, but I think its been a wasted investment. I use the controller for watching BD/DVD's and streaming, and so do my wife and kids.

Because it's shitty.

Let's say I'm watching a 2 hour movie on Blu-ray, and I want to pause it halfway through to make a sandwich and pick up where I left off afterwards. I have two options:

1) The controller is on the entire time, sucking away battery life.

2) The controller goes to sleep after a certain period of time. To pause the movie, I have to wake up the controller, select my gamer profile, then press a button on the controller that in no way indicates that it's a pause button. The movie's still playing in the background, unable to be seen, while I'm logging in too. If I take too long making my sandwich and the controller times out again, I have to go through the same B.S. to get it to play.

I love the PS3 remote, and it's a drag that there's not an equivalent for the PS4. I've stopped using my PS4 for movie watching and use the Xbox One instead. Even without a remote, just being able to say "Xbox play", "Xbox pause", "Xbox rewind", etc. is a hell of a lot more convenient.

Ah, good point. I forgot about how the controller turns itself off and you have to sign in and shit again on the PS4. That is pretty fucking annoying actually.

Yeah the bluetooth remote was worth it just for not having to constantly re-charge the controller. Because I honestly use the PS3 FAR more for media (blu-ray, streaming from my PC/online) than I ever did for games (reasons in Chess' post below), so that remote was a god-send.

The PS4 signs you out of your profile when the controller disconnects? Really?
I'm sure they'll address it, but I hadn't heard of that one yet.

Since others have mentioned the XO, I'll say... it never actually occurred to me to just say "Xbox Pause" when I want to pause the video I'm watching. I always scramble for the controller, turn it on, then press pause.

On a different note, does The Order have a firm release date yet? I'm way more excited than I should be for that one.

It doesn't sign the system out but it asks who's using the controller whenever you turn one on. It has one benefit which annoyed me about the 360. If the battery is dying, I can turn it off and turn on another controller without issue. The 360 would always see another controller as player 2.

Thanks for clarifying. Still seems odd. When you're watching something, who cares who grabs the controller to pause the video? The system shouldn't care.

re: PS4 Release Thread: Kill Launch App #Driveclub due October 2014!!!

Maybe they'll be able to add something to a future update where the system knows if you're watching media vs playing a game. Either way, it's one button press extra. You turn the controller on and it asks if the logged in account is using it or a guest (or other profiles if you have more than one on the machine). It defaults to your profile so you just have to press X to continue. If that's what was required to fix the issue 360 had that I mentioned above, I'm glad to have it.
