My question is, do these headsets use some optical trickery to make your eyes think the displays are further from your eyes than they really are? I can't really focus on things that are much closer than 7-8 inches from me.

Just add Oculus Rift support damnit.

Cell phone gaming. Absolutely huge over there and no need to buy a console to play them.

I wish the system could auto-download pre-ordered games if you have it in standby. I had to turn it on and go to the store to download Thief, which I had already paid for.

Hearing rumors about framerate issues on PS4 version of Thief. Will be interesting to hear what you think.

The game has issues in its 3 ports. It was a long development. I got the PC version, and although the game uses the Unreal Engine, it doesn't look that great, compared to other recently released games in the PC.

So any issues I will blame it in the developer.

The Guardian posted a pretty lengthy article about this the other day. I knew the Japanese market wasn't close to being where it was, but I didn't realize it plummeted from 50% of the global market down to 10% (!) in less than a decade.

Great article. Thanks for linking. Like you, I'm surprised it's quite that big of a drop or that they were ever quite that high. 50%???

I'm thinking back to this past generation, and while my favorite game(s) of the generation were Japanese (Mario Galaxy 1&2), literally everything else on my top 10 is Western developed...stuff like Fallout, Bioshock, BF, Uncharted, Arkham, Orange Box etc. During prior generations, Japanese games dominated.

I was also shocked to find out that La Mulana was developed in Japan. Really enjoyed that game.

I credit it to the rise of western developers and a bit of stagnation with the eastern developers. JRPGs used to be my favorite thing to play when I was younger but my tastes have changed and I now could care less about any JRPGs . Fighting games also fall into the same category for me.

JRPGs have gotten way too complicated for their own good. Hint: if your game requires a 25-hour tutorial (FFXIII) you might want to consider simplifying your combat system.

ADHD. Japanase games require more attention and more time. They are harder too. Speaking in general of course.

Yep. I played through the first two FF13 games and they way over complicated things. Looking through the guide for the third it looks like they've even made it worse. Even games like Pokemon have added in so many different systems that they are going away from what I loved about them in the first place.

Pokemon is still as basic as they come, though, by design. There are added layers and animations and whatnot, sure, but still pretty basic, almost to a fault.

That's a big problem with Japanese game design, in that they're pretty insular and tend to play it safe. I love Dragon Quest, but it's not exactly the most innovative or technically amazing series; yet the sales are through the roof (and even that went portable). Monster Hunter, while also a decent game, isn't really that innovative. Compare American RPGs, where you have a system that's almost too open (even back to the Ultima days), to the mostly straightforward JRPGs, which rely on innovative battling systems but otherwise have a pretty linear story with set characters. It's not like they catered that much to the American market way back when, they basically built stuff for them and some of it was universal (or niche) enough to catch on here.

I understand the complaint about FFXIII... you really don't get into the battle system for a long, long time, and even then it's a little overwhelming; then you don't get an overworld until the very end. But it streamlined a lot of the redundancy of traditional JRPGs; they don't try to fool you into thinking you have a choice, they made everything basically a linear path, and they don't even bother with stuff like stores or armor. They heal you after every battle, so they take that aspect of grinding away. I actually liked the changes once I got used to it. As to why they can't tell a more straightforward story, I have no idea.

No word yet on what we get as our freebie for March but in the PS Asia Blog, they announced that they were giving away Dead Nation Apocalypse Edition for PS4 as the Playstation Plus freebie. The game itself hasn't even been announced yet, but it's pretty clear it's coming. Judging by Resogun, Housemarque knows their way around the PS4 architecture.

Can you enable your download from your phone on the PSN app? I know it's not auto-download, but if you're not near your system perhaps this is your next best option?

A little more info on our free PS4 game for March:

Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition Coming to PS4 March 4th

The best-ever version of the smash hit Dead Nation is making its way to PS4 next week on March 4th. Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition will be available on PlayStation Store for $14.99 and PlayStation Plus members will be able to download it as part of their Instant Game Collection.

Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition is a top-down shoot ‘em up, set in an apocalyptic, zombie-infested world. It comes from the talented developer Housemarque, famous for the Super Stardust series, and more recently the critically acclaimed Resogun.

Dead Nation features a full campaign mode, which can be played solo or co-op (either online or local).

Exclusively available on PS4, Dead Nation: Apocalypse Edition features numerous enhancements, making it the best version yet. You can now play in full 1080p HD, with improved textures, rendering, and effects — Dead Nation has never looked better. We also improved the controls, adding in a quick weapon select so your favorite zombie decimator is never out of reach.

The Road to Devastation expansion is now included in the main game, giving you two extra game modes — Arcade and Endless — allowing you to test yourself against ever increasing odds. And with support for the official PlayStation companion app, all you completionists out there now have a second screen to monitor your game stats as you play.

One of the new features in Apocalypse Edition, which you may have spotted in the trailer, is Challenge mode; every time you finish a single level, you can now send your score over to a friend to try and beat. When playing a challenge you can see the avatar of the player who set the challenge, allowing you to race against them or scope out their high-scoring route. What’s that I hear you say? “What if your friends are no match for your zombie decapitating skills?” Well, how about you take on the challenge of any leaderboard entry, for any single level, made by any player?

My favorite new feature is Broadcast+ mode. In this mode, you can stream your game to the masses interactively, and your viewers can influence the difficulty of your game. Periodically all your viewers, whether they be on PS4 or a web browser, have the option to vote between a positive and negative effect that occurs in your game. There are a total of 30 different voting effects that can occur, ranging from spawning zombie packs to giving the player ammo, or even disabling the player’s ability to sprint. But don’t worry; as a player you can get back at the masses, because voters will appear in your game as named zombies for you to exact your revenge on.

Stay on the lookout for more Dead Nation news soon, including hints and tips and an update on the PS Vita version.

are ps1 & ps2 classics (non-upgrades) from PSN playable on PS4? if so, does ps+ allow cloud saves for those to continue progress from ps3 to ps4?

No. Not yet, anyways.
The PS2 games had to be remastered to be playable on the PS3, so there's no way they'd be playable on the PS4 (besides the upcoming streaming service, of course)

I've had Dead Nation since its first decent sale, but I was out of the country for a while unexpectedly right after getting it, so it was on my backlog for years.

Unfortunately, I finally played through it a just a few weeks before the PS4 came out.

Awesome game though.

You never heard of Dead Nation before? It came out a long time ago. It should be "'Resogun', from the makers of 'Dead Nation'".

Wasn't Dead Nation one of the free PS3 games to pick from after the PSN hack?

It was one of the "Sorry we compromised your credit card information and then you couldn't log onto PSN for over a month" freebies. Don't think it was ever a PS Plus freebie, but I could be wrong about that.
