re: The PlayStation 4 / PS4 Thread: Still Going Strong
It looks like the Playstation VR will now only be sold (at least for pre-orders) in a $500 bundle

Rumor - Sony working on an upgraded Playstation "4.5"
http://kotaku.com/sources-sony-is-wo...4-5-1765723053
Interesting since we've heard similar stuff on the Microsoft side too.
http://kotaku.com/sources-sony-is-wo...4-5-1765723053
Sony is currently planning a new version of the PS4 with increased graphical power and games running at 4K resolution, developer sources tell Kotaku.
We don’t know whether current PS4 owners will be able to upgrade or if they’ll have to buy an entirely new device to benefit from this power boost, but from what we hear, Sony has started briefing developers.
Based on conversations with developers who have spoken with Sony, this ‘PS4.5’ will include an upgraded GPU both to support high-end 4K resolution for games and add more processing power that can enhance the games supported by PlayStation VR, the headset Sony will launch this fall. It’s unclear if ‘PS4.5’ is an official name or just a nickname that developers have been using. One developer jokingly called it the ‘PS4K’ while telling me about the device.

Wonder if it'll be something like the Razer Core.

If both major consoles really do an incremental upgrade, and it's actually successful enough to fracture the user base, that may turn me off of console gaming altogether. I've already realized that the focus of the current gen systems, stuff like integrating social media and streaming and vr and microtransactions just isn't really my cup of tea. At the very least there isn't really much reason to own both consoles, at least not early on, and I might not adopt so early next time around.

I'd be fine with it if it doesn't fracture the user base and all games are both forwards and backwards compatible.

re: The PlayStation 4 / PS4 Thread: Still Going Strong
i doubt that'll be the case, it seems it would just unlock 4k and VR modes in games that would still run fine in 720p/1080p on the standard models. Like on PC.

So if you want VR you'll not only shell out 500 bucks, but have to rebuy the console as well? Sounds like a terrible idea.

I'm surprised you guys would jump to PC if you weren't already, since this doesn't sound to me like it would complicate things that much depending on how the upgraded console works. As long as games are still playable and there aren't exclusive games to the newer model and just add improved graphics or resolution, it wouldn't be a big deal. As was said in the Microsoft thread I created about hardware upgrades, sounds like more it would be like the cell phone model.
I imagine everyone going x86 helps with this too.

My phone runs at 2560x1440 and it's acceptable for VR gaming, less so for video.

It's true that we'll have to see how the new system works. But if you look at the iPhone model, most of the beefier games won't run on old hardware. If you look at the new 3ds model, there are exclusive games (Xeno and snes ports) and games that are gimped on the old 3ds.
I'm not even sure what they would be doing on the 4K front. Unless they have some really cutting edge technology, they're not outputting games in 4K natively at a reasonable price point. If this is all just to support their VR then that's fine, I can safely ignore it for now.

If PS4.5 is a thing, it probably won't come out until 2017, but more likely 2018 and be called....wait for it....PS5. I know that sounds like a quick turn around, but didn't a lot of people think the last jump from last gen to current gen took too long?

Kotaku has actually been pretty good about big rumors like this, including Fallout and Assassin's Creed stuff in the past. Regardless, it's fun discussion and I personally think it's more then just BS given that we also heard Microsoft talk about something similar.

I will call bullshit on the 4K thing, though. I mean, maybe there'll technically be 4K support that only very undemanding games can take advantage of, but that's a huge, huge leap in resolution, and we're not going to get anything like that in a $400-$500 box anytime soon.

Wow.....
DriveClub developer shuts down
Developer Evolution Studios, known for DriveClub for the PS4 and MotorStorm for the PS3, has shut down.
Sony confirmed the closure of the UK studio, which has been working on DriveClub ever since the game was released in 2014. The game went through a rough launch, where most of the features weren’t available due to poor testing by the developer.
Last year, Sony cut 55 people from Evolution Studios due to DriveClub’s failure at the marketplace, and now they have let go the rest of the staff and closed the company for good.
Sony has said that they will try and relocate some of the developers to their other studios, if possible.
This likely means the end of new DriveClub content and updates, unless Sony moved further development to another studio.

Bummer. DriveClub did eventually turn into a great game, but yeah, they needed it to be great right out the gate, and it wasn't.

Eurogamer's sources confirm the PS4.5 / PS4K: http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/di...sony-making-it
They think it's a 2017 thing, though.

4K support with Ultra HD blu ray playback makes the most sense. Of course it would be cool to see some better frame rate or up scaled graphics in games, but not sure if they could pull that off without pissing people off. They have a pretty good lead over MS now and won't chance fucking that up.
