LOL!
And... Like a male teenager having sex for the first time.... I couldn't hold it anymore. I bought the PC version of the game. In my defense, it was $20 in Best Buy after all the GCs and discounts. I have only played for ~30 hours in the X1, so it will be interesting to see what I can do in the PC. At least 5 hours choosing mods, before starting the game, of course. :D |
Re: Fallout 4
Have a quick question for those who have finished the main quest line. I know it's a bit early to be having a full on discussion, so be mindful about tagging your responses:

Re: Fallout 4
I just picked this up today for the PS4. I wanted to go PC, but I had some BB credit to use and didn't feel like buying a Steam card and coming home to wait for the game to install. Just being impatient.
So quick question, I'm maybe 4-5 hours in -- how much base building should I be doing at my house/Red Rocket? Is there any reason to focus on that this early in the game? It seems super intimidating and right now I'd rather just go explore. |

Re: Fallout 4
I've pretty much ignored the whole base building thing except for a few quests where you have to build a structure or two. I wanted to explore and do Fallout stuff, not play Minecraft: Wasteland Edition.
However, I guess if you put a little effort into it you do rack up XP for each thing you build, and apparently you can get a steady Cap income rolling in which could be nice. Even though my first character had max Charisma, I haven't put any points into the vendor related perks, so ammo & supply prices still run fairly high. I'm probably going to spend some time with it on my new character in order to open up some higher income. I'm focusing on melee, heavy weapons & power armor, so the upkeep is going to be higher due repairing the armor often, buying expensive Fusion Cores, etc. One thing I DO recommend (and something I didn't do at all my first time through) is go around each settlement you clear and scrap everything you can. You'll rack up a lot of upgrade and building materials that will automatically be stored in the Workshop. Saves a lot of the hassle of picking up every coffee cup you come across. |
Re: Fallout 4
The only thing holding me back from creating an actual settlement is having to go back to defend it again and again while I am in the middle of other things.
|
Re: Fallout 4
Defending a settlement really doesn't show up too often, and if you ignore it you just need to repair a few broken things. I'm still doing the settlement stuff a bit, but honestly other than building crafting tables, it seems a bit pointless.
|
Re: Fallout 4
I'm on hiatus until tomorrow night when I get back home but one thing I remember about some of the folks I leave at any settlement is giving them at least a sleeping bag if I don't have materials for beds. That seems to raise morale.

Re: Fallout 4
Finished. 78 hours. I had made a hard save early on when you had to split up missions, so I am going back to clear up other paths, but for how I wanted to play I did everything.
Spoiler on who I sided with in the end Spoiler:
Spoiler:
I had zero glitches. No freezes. No missions being locked out in my near 80 hours. There was a lot of frame rate drops outside but it never hurt the game. Overall I would put this on the same level as Fallout 3. It is more structured, and easier to follow, with a smaller feeling world, but more populated. Each game has a little something that makes it special. Still Bloodborne is by far my favorite game of the year. This is a clear second. |
Re: Fallout 4
Honest recommendation wanted: As someone who beat the main story of Fallout 3 but hadn't done any of the DLC and played New Vegas almost three times back-to-back-to-back, should I wait for this to drop in price and in the meantime do another runthrough of Fallout 3 and all the DLC? Honestly, I'm more interested in story and not flashy graphics, so that's a big factor.
|
Re: Fallout 4
This game is fun, there is a lot to do and a variety of factions to side with.

Re: Fallout 4
A couple of questions for anyone who bought the XBox one Fallout Console -
Did the Fallout 3 version have all the DLC? And, does anyone know if you can transfer your 360 fallout 3 gamesave (on usb) to the xbox one? Thanks! |

Re: Fallout 4
Damn, the amount of shit to store in workshops is overwhelming - I really want to focus on building stuff but your items don't carry over from workshop to workshop. Yeah I know, I can plop all my stuff on me and walk "Heavy" to one workshop but I don't want to do that.
I hear you can build carry bags for your companions and they don't get weighed down as easily - I tried doing this but....do you have to be a certain level?? I found nothing in the builder that shows you can craft any carry bags. when I'm around piper and accidentally weigh myself down she says "let me carry some of that" but I have no clue what to do. I'm a level 9 now but my guy is weak sauce, I tend to just try and run away from everything - can't believe how many hours I've spent on this game and I've barely done anything - just the way I like it. |
Re: Fallout 4
You can open up a trade dialogue with your companion and dump quite a bit of stuff onto them. You can also skirt the system by having them pickup items when they are already overweight. I have never heard of these carry bags.
|
Re: Fallout 4
Oh, didn't know that....do you actually trade when you do it or is there an option to "store"? and one last question...how do you make them pick stuff up?
Maybe I was mistaken then as I could have sworn I saw bags on dogmeat to carry stuff and asked about it. I saw those pack mules walking around but didn't have the heart to kill them. |
Re: Fallout 4
You open a trade dialogue, click on your inventory and then give them everything you have collected until it tells you that they can't carry anymore. I returned to my hub yesterday with over 700 pounds worth of stuff. Almost 600 pounds of weapons, crafting supplies, junk, etc. after I took out what I normally carry.
|
Re: Fallout 4
Thanks, sorry for the questions but this is my first fallout game and I'm not use to how flexible things are and the massive amount of options available.

Re: Fallout 4
You click on the companion and then look at the item on the ground from a bit of a distance and it will tell them to pick the item up.

Any good places to stock up on ammo? I've got a half-decent sniper rifle now, but can never find any ammo for it.

You can also set up a supply line between your settlements. Once a line is set up all your materials are shared between those settlements.

Thanks - will take a look. This game is seriously consuming me....I'm headed into "Deep nerd territory" with it - I'm scared.

Re: Fallout 4
I'm getting close to the 100 HR mark and have so much more to do it's mind boggling how much content there is to do. Is it possible to unlock every perk in one playthrough without grinding radiant quests? Or are they encouraging multiple playthroughs with different builds?

My advice, have at least 4 or 5 different weapons at all times that each use their own type of ammo. Also have a good melee weapon on hand for easier enemies to save on ammo. By level 20 or so my ammo problem went away, and by the end I had more ammo than I needed. At this point I felt like I wasted a perk spot on scrounger, but at least I made extra money each time I visited a vendor. |

The .38 ammo is ridiculously prevalent when looting bodies. I never used any of those weapons since for my Gunslinger based character, .38 was outclassed by the 10mm Pistol you get in the opening Vault area. I'd just trade a few hundred .38 for as much 10mm, .45, or .44 as I could, and tried to either walk away with a profit, or without spending more than a handful of caps. .45 becomes fairly common not tooo far into the game. Stuff like .44 and .50 are still in relatively low supply even in the level 30+ range for me. |

Here is a really good video with building tips. At the 4:23 mark he talks about the trade routes with settlers.
