To fit in with their One branding, it would be cool if they launched on 11/1 - but who knows.

Some new info about the indie games program on Xbox One:

Independent games will not have to adhere to a set pricing structure on the Xbox One. During an interview with Joystiq at PAX Prime, Microsoft's portfolio director for digital games Chris Charla said the ID@Xbox program, an initiative that will allow independent developers to eventually self-publish on Xbox One, will enable "every business model that any other game on Xbox One has." So ID@Xbox games support free-to-play, micro-transactions and premium pricing.

"On Xbox One, games that come through ID@Xbox are no different than any other game," Charla said. "They have full Gamerscore, full Achievements, can take advantage of SmartGlass, Kinect – if you can do it with an Xbox One game, you can do it with anything that comes through the ID@Xbox program. That's like a fundamental tenet of the program."

The ID@Xbox program, an effort that will allow independent developers to use retail Xbox One consoles as developer kits, was first announced last week. Developers will not be able to self-publish on Xbox One at launch later this year, though Microsoft has said the functionality will be rolled out an unspecified later date.

Free-to-play action game Warframe will be released for PS4 at launch and will remain a console exclusive for three months, Digital Extremes has announced, suggesting an Xbox One version will be released early in 2014.

"With how the industry is evolving, this really is the Player Generation," said Steve Sinclair, creative director at Digital Extremes. "Games are reaching players hands in so many different ways now and Sony gets it, which is why we are bringing Warframe exclusively to the PS4 first. There's no reason not to download Warframe on day 1 if you're an action game lover – it's free!"

Asked for clarification on what the exclusivity means, a spokesperson for the game told VideoGamer.com: "At present Warframe is already available to play on PC via www.playwarframe.com – but will be exclusive to PS4 on console for three months following its launch in November. Warframe is not currently announced for any other console formats."

Whilst not stated, it seems pretty obvious that an Xbox One version will launch early in 2014.

Digital Extremes also revealed second-screen functionality via an Android and iOS App called Warframe Nexus. This companion app will allow players to perform in-game tasks, whilst also delivering real-time game info while away from the PS4.

How big of deal is this.....

Xbox One: External Storage Not Supported at Launch

he Xbox One will not support external storage at launch, though it will be added later.

That's according to Microsoft's Major Nelson, who made the announcement in his latest podcast.

At around the 37 minute mark of the PAX special, he explains, "The future plan is for definitely to support external storage much like we do on the Xbox 360.

"My understanding is that feature will not be there at launch because the team is working on some other things, but it definitely is on the list. I don't know when it will come in though."

This reminds of something I had forgotten. The Xbox One's hard drive is not replaceable.

My main problem is not running out of space, though that will most likely be a problem, the main problem is that hard drives fail.

Re: The Ironically Thoughtless Xbox One Thread

This can become a big problem if they don't release the patch in the first year.

I wouldn't worry too much about the hard drive failing. The probabilities are low compared to the other components.

Re: The Ironically Thoughtless Xbox One Thread

Why the fuck would we need external storage at launch?

Yeah, sucks it is not part of it, but I won't have a need for it, for awhile. Same for the PS4.

500GB is a shit ton of room, I'm not even half full on my 250GB slim. Adding USB hard drive support later on seems fine to me, as long as thy actually do add it.

Raul3 09-02-13 03:02 PM

Re: The Ironically Thoughtless Xbox One Thread

Again, they have to add it in the first year.

All games need to be installed, all games are going to come in a bluray disc, so they may start at 20 GB. Yeah, I know, do you really need 20+ games installed at the same time?

But again, with the DVR, TV option, and all that kind of stuff, we may end up with 400GB or less of space available.

If it's not added in the first year, it's a problem. At launch? Not a problem.

It's a strange thing to not support an external hd via usb at launch, or even just weeks after launch. Is it really that hard of a thing to support?

chess 09-02-13 07:02 PM

Re: The Ironically Thoughtless Xbox One Thread

Wait...don't they just mean no games on external storage?

They can't possibly be launching an "all in one media player" that won't process photos, video or music from an external drive, can they?

Re: The Ironically Thoughtless Xbox One Thread

The thing that worries me about Major Nelson's statement is that he says the plan is to support external storage much like the 360 does. Well the 360 doesn't support it well at all.

Watch Dogs should be PS4 for 60 extra minutes of gameplay and Ghosts on Xbox for earlier DLC and dedicated servers.

At least I would think.

Microsoft has already stated "November," so at worst, the Xbox One will be released 15 days after the PS4. Realistically, the window between releases will likely be smaller.
