re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
http://www.engadget.com/2013/05/21/x...ating-systems/
The latest update out of the currently unfolding announcement in Redmond: the next-generation Xbox will run three operating systems simultaneously. Complementing Windows 8 and RT on PCs and tablets, there'll be a third distinct version of Microsoft's operating system that has been pared down specifically for the new console. This will be the main system OS used to run apps such as Skype and other non-game titles downloaded from the Xbox storefront. At the same time, virtualization technology similar to Microsoft's Hyper-V will be used to allocate the bulk of system resources to a second, dedicated "Xbox OS" when the user loads up a game. This game OS will remain a fixed entity throughout the life of the console, so that game developers can be confident their games will run regardless of how much the Windows side of the machine gets updated. Finally, the third OS sounds like a small layer to assist with the virtualization, allowing the two main personalities of the console to talk to each other. Read on for more. We're not sure yet just how much of the Windows 8 experience will be carried over to the Xbox, although the pictures shown on stage suggest we'll get something like a Start Screen with live tiles that mirror the rest of Microsoft's ecosystem. We're also told the Windows side of the console will support Snap mode for running two apps side by side. At a deeper level, the triple-OS approach is meant to work in conjunction with the console's ability to produce numerous visual "panes," which are full 1080p layers generated independently and displayed one on top of the other. These panes could could allow a user to play full-fledged Xbox games while also seeing their fantasy football app or Skype chat updating in a overlaid Windows pane. The multi-OS system also makes sense in relation to the HDMI passthrough feature, which will allow 1080p output from a separate source such as a cable box to be played in a window while another app or game is also running on top or alongside. In terms of whether apps will be cross-compatible between the regular Windows Store and the storefront accessed by the new console, we're told they won't. Developers will have to do a bit of work to make a Windows app suitable for the Xbox One, not least in terms of tuning their UI for Kinect or the wireless controller. But Microsoft's engineers told us that the underlying similarity between Windows 8/RT and Windows for the Xbox should make this a pretty easy feat for coders. |

The different OS'es doesn't bother me at all, but this statement was weird:

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
this is what I call another "Double Edge Sword" for MS & XO. They're putting in all this OS to do and run multiple functions...which is a good thing for many out there who want that. But unlike a PC when you add more programs and functions that command more resources where you can just add more RAM...you're stuck with the 8gb inside the XO.
So what happens later on when say more apps, more this and that are added? Already after the three OS on the hard drive was known the big question came up...how much memory is this diverting from actual gaming? The second part of the question is what about 2-4 years down the road? |
re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
Thanks for the clarification Music, and obviously, I could have just googled it.
It makes sense, I guess, but it hardly seems elegant, and I suppose it explains why they set aside so much RAM. Edit: I'm looking at 3GB set aside on X1 vs 1GB on PS4, which leaves 5GB and 7GB respectively for games, and PS4's RAM is also faster. It will be a while before that difference matters, but you have to think it will at some point. |
re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
I'm not really sure about that question...
Just like a PC, if the app is not running, then it is not using memory or CPU.... I would think they have a set environment for each OS so that it won't be an issue... |

I think most people expect it to be a non-issue, but those rumors of production issues and us just now getting "RAM speeds yielding better results in production models!" suggest they really are a bit behind.
If that's true, they've still got plenty of time to finalize specs. |

Most sources say that Microsoft's first Xbox 360 did not roll off the assembly line in 2005 until 69 days before the on sale date of Nov. 22.
If that's true, they've still got plenty of time to finalize specs. I don't see Microsoft announcing these details in a press release or their own keynote. They'll do it at Gamescon, which in the past has been Sony's home turf for announcements as Microsoft has only been there once in the past decade (2005). If those rumors are true, they'll wipe the floor with Sony during the conference. Bloggers are saying Microsoft won't increase hardware specifications in effort to make as much of a profit as possible on the console. Bullshit. Microsoft took a loss on the 360 and they were the first manufacture out of the current-generation to make a profit. The past two months for Microsoft have put the One nearly on life support. Buying DDR3 RAM in mass quantities costs next-to-nothing and Microsoft can come out swinging stating they've listened to feedback and have provided gamers with truly the next-generation console. |
re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
Yeah, changing their specs now wouldn't in any way contribute to the perception that they have no idea what they are doing.
They have to get at least a couple million of these things ready at least a week before launch, so there's less time than you think. Plus, there is already footage of the first X1 coming off of the assembly line: Spoiler:

Manufacturing times for electronics have significantly changed since the launch of the current-generation thanks in part due to companies like Apple and others. Whereas it might've taken months to produce one million devices, that can now be done in the matter of two-to-three weeks if not less.

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
This generation is substantially helped by the fact that the PS4 and Xbox One run on the same architecture, same processors and essentially the same GPUs. That's mass manufacturing potential at its finest.
Still, the Wii made money from day one, the PS3 probably took forever because of slow sales and expensive fucking blu-ray diodes or some technical shit, and the Xbox probably took some time with all its hardware fuck ups. |

Hereis a large shot of the motherboard layout minus the hard drive, fan and BR Drive....
http://gimbot.net/wp-content/uploads...rd-exposed.jpg ...I can't tell if it would be better or easier to increase the RAM or go with DDR5 |

I can't wait for the N64-style RAM Pack for the Xbox One.

re: Xbox One: We said WHAT at E3??
In the past, Sony has sponsored EVO in the past as well as covering it in their blogs. I'm not surprised in the slightest that booing occurred for a Microsoft product there.

Have the pre-orders already been active for a month? Wow, I never would have expected that you could still do this on July 15th.
I have both systems pre-ordered at Bestbuy and Amazon... hopefully BestBuy comes through and I don't have to spend "real" money... (Best Buy CC) ;) |
