Performance would be more than adequate to handle Xbox 360 titles. The real question is it worth it $$$ wise. I would of thought so, given that the PS4 isn't backwards compatible, but who knows. At least we should have an answer in a month or so.

Why is MS having a launch preview in May only then to show more at E3 in June? That's pretty strange timing.

Take the edge off the hardware/features, focus on software at E3. Makes sense to me, especially if you're planning a holiday launch.

Okay now it's not always online, except when it needs to be.
The rumors of an online-only Xbox have been rampant since a creative director’s comments last week. But tech blogger Paul Thurrott has been told some interesting things regarding Microsoft’s next console.
On the What the Tech podcast, he said source informed him that the console will always be online but not be required for games. This buys into the whole notion of the next Xbox will interact with your cable box. That would require an online connection as would online games but you’d still be able to have single-player or offline experiences.
“The resulting cacophony…where people are really freaking out over this issue is really wrong-headed,” Thurrott said on the podcast. “I’ve noticed that trying to stop the tsunami by standing in front of it is not the best strategy. But, I’ve tried to give some common sense reaction to this which is not working.”
He ended with a question from a user who has frequent disconnects and replied “It is inconceivable that the next Xbox is going to require the type of connection that you would have to maintain to play a high quality shooter online like Call of Duty,”

Yeah sounds like the 720 operates exactly the same way as the 360, so why are they using phrases like always-online? it certainly doesn't sound always-online and only generates negative confusion

No point in Microsoft making an official statement about it, since they haven't even technically announced the product yet.

Apparently this will have HDMI Passthrough.

Kind of like the Google TV. IMO, that's a great idea.
Not surprised this is moving toward the "Set top box" idea, it always seemed like the logical direction for game consoles. Soon we'll have 2 year contracts with the cable company to get an Xbox Durango set-top cable box.

There was a time when for me, doing anything other than playing games on a console was stupid.
NOW.....I'm doing slightly more movie/TV streaming on my XBOX than game playing.

My Xbox, and PS3, like most here, is always online. That's actually one of the great advantages of PS+ in the PS3.

According to a report on Game Informer, Adam Orth, the Microsoft creative director who last week upset some folks with his comments about always-online technology, is no longer with the company.
Responding to a Kotaku report that claimed the system would require a constant connection to the internet, Orth made several comments such as "I don't get the drama around having an 'always on' console. Every device now is 'always on'. That's the world we live in."
His outbursts prompted an apology from Microsoft, who said "This person is not a spokesperson for Microsoft, and his personal views do not reflect the customer centric approach we take to our products or how we would communicate directly with our loyal consumers."
Asked for confirmation from Microsoft, Kotaku was told by a spokesperson “We do not comment on private personnel matters.”

Now they're saying the 720 will be backwards compatible, but you'll need to attach some add-on device that is sold separately.

at first I was like WHAT THE FUCK! Sega? Then I was thinking about trading in my 360 and exchanging it for the add on (since the add on is actually a 360 like device just smaller)...might actually be kinda cool..

Would be awesome if original xbox games are still playable, too. I wasn't expecting them to be, but it sounds like it could be a possibility, given the nature of the device.

Next-generation Xbox launch titles include 'Ryse' and a new 'Forza'
Microsoft is working on a number of launch titles for its new Xbox console. One of the first games to launch on the next Xbox will be Ryse, according to multiple sources familiar with Microsoft's Xbox plans. Microsoft originally unveiled Ryse at E3 2011, promising an exclusive Xbox 360 release with Kinect functionality. A release has never materialized for Xbox 360 and the company has remained fairly silent about the title's progress, noting that it was still in development in mid-2012 and again earlier this year. The Verge understands that Microsoft has been rewriting the game to take advantage of its next-generation console, due later this year.
We're told Ryse is designed to be Microsoft's new Gears of War / Halo mega launch title. It's set in the roman empire period and uses deep Kinect integration to allow a player to slash and kick at enemies. We understand that Ryse will take advantage of the new body tracking improvements in the next Kinect sensor. Ryse is part of four major launch titles for the next-generation Xbox. Sources tell us that a new Forza title with "super life-like" graphics will also be made available at launch, alongside a zombie game and a family game set on an island with Pixar movie-style graphics. We're told that the family game will utilize Kinect to scan a body and generate a virtual character in the game.
We understand that these four titles are a small selection of the launch titles for the next-generation Xbox. Third-party support is said to be strong in the first-person-shooter genre. Microsoft is also working on some improvements to Xbox Live, including a switch to currency over the Microsoft Points system. Microsoft is expected to hold a special Xbox event in May, ahead of a full unveiling at E3 in June.
