Re: Bungie - Destiny

I'm enjoying this, but I still have to give the edge to Borderlands (both 1 & 2) over this.

Destiny certainly has the better graphics, both in an artistic way and in a technical way. And they're fairly similar as far as gamepla/gunplay/control, but Borderlands handily beats Destiny in story, characters, setting, loot/guns, and just plain fun. I mean, Destiny's shiny and new, and we've all now sunk more than 100 hours into two Borderlands games, but Destiny just can't compare. It's just missing that little something that makes a game like Borderlands special.

They already do. It's at the end of most missions.

Not laughing about your comment, but rather the repetitive nature of the missions.

That can almost be applied to the majority of the games...like COD & BF. Take gun, shoot enemy, go to next mission, shoot gun, kill enemy, rinse and repeat. Did that a lot in Borderlands where you played the entire stoy part and replayed again to level up and replayed again to level up. The Game Critics are all hyped on Evolved where you run after a Kraken killing everything around, take it down, rinse and repeat.

If the game didn't have the side quest...yes you do have to retrack here & there...then be criticized for not having more to do. It's funny but they do a complete 180° on the MP experience just raving about it. That's where some of the critic bias comes in...either leans MP or SP but not both. They rip the SP aspect but rave the MP...probably one reason why they're so hyped on Evolve. I love the game...the maps, the characters and layout. Not perfect but far better than what I played on the 360. We still have some major DLC coming so there will be patches and updates no doubt. I would like to see "Horde/Firefight" mode though being put in....
Yeah some of the reviews/complaints are absurd. "All you do is shoot things!" D-

That describes two dozen multimillion selling franchises.

Re: Bungie - Destiny

I'd say the Gamespot review is about right. I find myself enjoying the game less and less as the hours wear on. Usually it's the other way around. The story is truly a repetitive mess. The online is ok but nothing new or something that keeps me coming back. This game reminds of Defiance a lot, just with better graphics. Dare I say that I enjoyed Defiance a bit more though, and it wasn't even that great either?

Yeah, but as I said, unlike those other games where you "shoot things", Destiny just feels so much more lifeless, hollow and empty. Could be a lack of story, characters, or that it's just too homogenized, scrubbed clean of all weirdness to appeal to the biggest number of people, thereby making it truly appeal to no one.

To break the monotony of shooting things, they should've included some space battles. Building up your ship and taking it out to explore the galaxy, run into an asteroid field, do some pvp and pve dogfighting. Maybe in a future expansion pack?

The problem this time is the way the game was presented and talked about beforehand. Bungie set expectations far beyond just shooting things.

Also, the fact that other franchises do the same thing shouldn't excuse it with this one.

Because when you are on the planets/moon it is pretty much only you vs the enemies... no NPCs except for those via messages...?

Hell... I'm not sure how you really join people for co-op... at least not within the game itself - 3 player only co-op sucks (but it is better than 2 player only) .

One of the biggest disappointments for me is the forever watching of ships floating in space while the game loads the next destination. It makes me dread leaving one planet and returning to the tower. It takes forever, it reminds you that space battles would be nice and it ultimately makes me start thinking about turning the game off and watching a movie or something else.

No biggie. My pet peeve is the intermittent drop outs due to no internet signal. That's a pain.

Re: Bungie - Destiny

okay so I spent an hour in the crucible and got zero experience points out of it. I could barely kill anyone at level 8 (very lopsided...how hard is it to match stats when forming the 3v3) and the connection would crap out every time before it ended so I didn't get the "end game" experience points. frustrating.

The crucible needs to be fixed...I understand that some things are disabled to pretend its a level playing field but it certainly is not. When the other guy has much better armor and a much better weapon at level 20 it amounts to him having triple your hit points. Every guy I see with a yellow bar on top of his red, will be impossible for me to kill as he can one-shot me as I plink away at his yellow bar. It just isn't feasible to compete unless you are up at level 20 or above. And you don't gain experience points when the server kicks you out in the middle.

/frustrated rant over, haha/

Re: Bungie - Destiny

The biggest problem I have is actually finding people I know that play the game. It'll say there's a friend on say Earth doing patrol, but then I can never locate anyone.

Can you really ever finish the missions during Patrol Cosmodrome? The side missions keep on going.

Re: Bungie - Destiny

No. They're just generic side missions meant for grinding. There's no limit to the number you can do. Same for every other location.

As mentioned in the article Deftones linked to, crucible is a great way to level up. You get good xp with each completed game. On top of that, the crucible bounties give 5000xp upon completion. In five watches I went from a low 12 to a mid 14.

Is the XP in crucible based on kill count? If so I'll never get any.

Nope, per match. If you're not to comfortable playing crucible, play control matches. If your team can get b flag, camp near the flag in a corner and kneel down so you don't get picked up on radar. If your radar gets bright red pulse grenade the flag and then open up a can of whoop-ass. I loath campers in team deathmatch, but it's fine in a game mode like this.

Another tip is if you're uncomfortable in team deathmatch style games, follow someone. If they get into a firefight and lose you can pick up an easy kill since you'll have a big health advantage over the other guy.

The main thing is to get comfortable with the maps and realize where the heavy traffic areas are.

Re: Bungie - Destiny

The best way to earn XP in Control is to play the objectives. It helps to stay with your team if you can, but typically you can avoid heavy firefights and pick up points for neutralizing and capturing points. If you see a point being captured by the other team, and you're super charged, use it and you can clean up usually, depending on how many enemies are there. Or use a grenade.

But as mentioned above, bounties are essential if you want to rank up faster. They have different values for both Vanguard and Crucible. Some vanguard are 2500, some 5000. Crucible varies from 2500-5000 as well. I know I had some that were 3750.

Re: Bungie - Destiny

Hadn't played in a few days so I hadn't really experienced any of the unbalanced play. Played some Control for an hour or so and was doing okay. Didn't seem all that unbalanced to me. Then I unlocked Rumble so I gave that a go. Boom. Matched up with all mid 20s and I was struggling to get kills. What a joke. Bungie's got some work ahead of them if they want to make this a viable long term game. I mean if I can get the drop on someone, unload a whole clip and they spin around and one shot kill you... not fun.

Then again, Bungie's full of hardcore players, right? Maybe that was the goal, to weed out the average-to decent only leaving noobs and pros.

Re: Bungie - Destiny

All you need to tell the PvP is unbalanced is to look at the scoreboard after matches. 9 times out of 10 the ranking will be in descending order from highest level to lowest.
