Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?
That's the direction every console is heading. The boatloads of money made off of casual gaming and more general entertainment this generation had not gone unnoticed. It's here to stay, like it or not.

That honor goes to Nintendo over a long period of time.
Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo are all moving that direction. People watch movies and tv shows via netflix, hulu and blu far more than they play games on the current generation hardware. The useage for the non-game services dwarfs game playing.

If one of their ideas is to use a phone as a game controller, that would be awful IMHO.

Not even for video? They can play 1080p video now, even though few games can render at that resolution. If 1080p will be the standard for games in the next generation, I don't think 4K for video is out of the question, especially considering how Sony is pushing it.

Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?
Sony is pushing "mastered in 4K" bullshit discs that are the same 1080p as all other Blu-rays. When the PS3 came out, HDTVs were becoming the norm and they wanted to push Blu-ray, so it made sense for the system to support 1080p and put the games on Blu-ray discs. 4k is barely even a blip on the radar at this point. Most people don't know it's a thing. A handful of theaters have 4k projectors, and I can think of maybe 10 movies that have gotten proper 4k releases. TVs are even further off. Sony isn't going to spend money to support a resolution for which there's virtually no content, and no displays that can support said content even if it did exist. If 4k suddenly blows up they can always release a PS 4.5.

But then I'd have something to support my 15fps GoPro 3 videos!
Yeah... 4k sounds nice and all but broadcasts are still in 720p and videogames are still struggling at 720p... I don't see the point just yet.

This is why I questioned what "support" 4K means. Sony can make the PS4 capable of outputting at that resolution, but it doesn't necessarily mean any games will be made to run at it.

I know I've written about it before, but even your AAA titles will be unconverted to 1080p. Battlefield 3 has a native resolution of 1280x720 and runs at 30 FPS on both the PS3 and 360. Same goes for Halo 4, but obviously only on the 360. Call of Duty: Black Ops II has less of a native resolution, 880x720, but runs at 60 FPS on the PS3 and 360.

This is from last year but should give you an idea:
http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news...-shootout.aspx
My guess is any modern, middle of the road ($150-$250) videocard should be able to play 4K video without issues.
Games? Ha! Good joke!
So, can the new consoles have the power to play 4K video? Probably. But it needs to be streaming, a la Youtube, and of course later Netflix and all of those services. Or through a local file. But then again, you will need a 4K monitor.
If they are planning for a 10 years lifespan again, it may not be a bad idea to have 4K support. Would it make any difference in the next 5 years? Absolutely not.
So if you were in their shoes, would you include 4K support?

I don't like the talk of a "10 year console" when we have yet to see one.

I thought that the first Resistance was in true 1080p. Frankly, I don't really care. 720p games look fantastic and the costs to developers of going to 1080p aren't worth it.

I can play Black Ops II on my computer at full-on 2560 x 1440 with all the graphical settings on max. However, I chose to play it on the 360 because I'm an idiot, that's where my friends play it, and I like to be called homophobic slurs by twelve-year-olds every other minute.

Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?
Yes, I meant that 4K would be for video only, not games.
I should clarify that I don't think the support will be there at launch, but added later via a firmware update, after the codecs are finalized and the developers get them running well on the system. I doubt it will require revised hardware, provided the console uses HDMI 1.4 or later and has sufficient processing power.
Of course that upcoming line of BDs is a marketing gimmick, but they are getting ready to release actual 4K content via some medium, on discs (that spin faster, presumably) and/or distributed digitally. I'm not all that interested and it probably won't sell very well, but I believe it will be playable on the PS4 someday.

You'd also need a new format for delivery. Blu-ray wouldn't be able to handle 4k, unless it was just a couple of minutes of it.

Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?
Summation : Both consoles will have very similar architecture. Sony's console will be the slightly more robust piece of hardware. Microsoft will use more Ram but it will be current gen DDR3 Ram. Sony will use half the Ram but it will be faster DDR5 Ram. MS will also have extra Ram to make up the difference in speed or to possibly run apps while gaming.
Both consoles will run 1080p 60 fps. Sonys video card is once again more robust and could possibly run at twice that resolution (possibly for 3D (less possibly for 4K))
From the specs I agree. Sony's video card opens up the possibility of Streaming 4K or some kind if 4K up conversion but true 4K - I doubt it. I think 4K would require hardware that is physically different from BluRay. besides I think we are still 4-5 years from 4K being affordable. Imagine trying to explain to Joe 6pack why he has to upgrade from HD to 4K.

Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?
I found this over at a site clled Dual Pixels on a article called....
Rumor: Behind the Scenes with First Party Hardware and Third Party Softeare on Nex Gen
– Sony is near the middle end part of their Project Orbis, their next generation PS4. It will not be called Playstation 4, teams have started to call the final name as Omni. Omni will reflect their new hardware and content delivery philosophy. Omni will be “very capable” of doing modern day graphics compared to a Direct X 11 level of technology like Unreal Engine 4 and Frostbite 2. Compared to Wii U, it is better, but not the biggest leap in the world according to developer friends of mine. The key is the Omniviewer, a thin, lite and slick head mounted autosteroptic display that can track the users head and presents a 360 image view with semi transparent AMOLED screens. This can turn any TV into a 3D TV, as well as add extra augmented reality information outside of the TV screen.
One application from an entertainment perspective seeing movies in 2k, 4k or IMAX resolutions as their original size where you have to move your head to look at the full picture being displayed. Can also synch with the Vita. The new controllers whether it’s the Dual-Moves or the Classic DualShock will have pulse sensors in the grips for biofeedback gameplay. Plans are a Basic Unit with 160 gigs and just the system with controller at $350-$399 and one with the Omniviewer and a pack-in game for $450-$499. Aims are for a September 2013 launch.
– Omni is also part of their philosophy with the new OmniCloud, the new version of Gaikai [Gaitai Spelling Error Fixed]. This service will not only cloud stream PS1, PS2 and select PS3 games to Playstation Certified devices but will also allow every digital and retail purchase to have access to a copy on the cloud. Basically, you buy one game, you can use it on any Plyastation device. Direct hardware Backwards Compatibility will be available by a $70 – $99 dongle that is plugged into the Omni that contains a PS3 on a chip with Cell to run games.
