Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?
Might do just that. It's not bad with every blu-ray unless I pause and take forever to finish a movie. However when I pop in a DVD, which thankfully is rarely the case, the damn fan is on within a few minutes.
The PS3 has been a stellar blu-ray player for me and every single time I've thought about getting a standalone player I have to remind myself the PS3 has never given me a bit of issues with any movie bought or rented. I only hope the PS4 is the exact same way.

Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?
Even though the psn + carries over to the PS4 what happens if I want to have the ps+ account on my ps3 and ps4?
Will one ps + account work for both systems or will another + account needed to be purchased for the ps4? I don't see anything about this since I will be logging in with my same username.

this makes it seem like it's not just digital, but with discs as well.
In an interview with Game Trailers’ Geoff Keighley, Sony CEO Jack Tretton shed more light on how used games will work on the PlayStation 4. It seems that, while the system’s first-party games will be free to trade in or share without restriction, third-party publishers can choose to behave otherwise.
Tretton’s remarks start at about 1:08:00 in this segment:
“If the consumer pays x amount of dollars for a game and they don’t have the flexibility to get some additional value out of it, it changes the way the perceive the value of the game and it takes dollars out of their pocket to buy a new game... We just want to give the consumer flexibility.”
Asked what Sony’s response would be if publishers wanted to restrict used games sales, Tretton replied:
“We create the platform. We’ve certainly stated with our first party games, we’re not going to be doing that. But we welcome publishers and their business models to our platforms. There’s going to be free-to-play; there’s going to be every potential business model on there and again that’s up to their relationship with the consumer and what they think is going to put them in the best stead. So we’re not going to dictate that. We’re going to give them a platform to publish on."
On DRM:
"The DRM decision is going to have to be in the hands of the third parties. That’s not something that we’re going to dictate or mandate or control or implement."
Tretton also said that a PlayStation Plus membership will be a mandatory purchase if you want to play multiplayer for PS4.

Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?
Thanks for the info on PSN plus guys. Very helpful. Since the free games are tied to PS3 and don't appear to be transferring to the PS4, I will just wait until I pick up a PS4 and join then. Hopefully they will have some bundles going on when the consoles come out.
Luckily I don't care about trophies so I will just get me a new name when I join up.
That is actually a good one since I seem to be behind the times with my name here. Damn dvdtalk's stupid name policy.

They said they don't implement anything, so if the publisher wants to include their own DRM - like EA Online Pass - Sony won't deny them.
It's absolutely no different than the current gen in that regard. But no "activating" every game you pop in.

Not even close. It will be just like used games on the PS3. If publishers want to restrict games using codes or whatnot, they can. There is nothing like MS's transfer-once-to-someone-on-your-friendlist, no restrictions on who is allowed to sell used games, etc.

Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?
Yep.
How so? Microsoft said you have to activate your games and a store has to "deactivate them" to sell them, and there's user account lockdowns for lending and nothing in place for renting. Plus your system calls home every 24 hours.
Sony just basically said "We aren't implementing anything, if a publisher wants to do their own DRM it's up to them.", just like EA did this gen.
Pretty dramatic difference.
So in other words, just like the system that will be in place on XBox one? Yet the Internet is up in arms dooming MS (which is never good for gamers as MS's exit from gaming/consoles would eliminate competition) and that Sony wins. Sounds like Sony is just spinning it better and/or not announcing it at conference like MS did.

Re: PS4 to be announced February 20th?
While PS4 has this thing locked up as of now, I've gotta say I'm not a fan of the PS+ being required for multiplayer. I'm a pretty casual gamer. I'll go months without turning on my PS3 and then spend 6 weeks playing something, and then repeat. Having to purchase a subscription which I'll only lightly use just makes me less likely to purchase anything that has a strong multiplayer component.
It also has me wondering about games which have an online part, but not actual multiplayer. Gran Turismo 5 springs to mind (and I assume 6 will work similarly). A large part of that game was in the Time Trial challenges and downloading ghosts of other vehicles to compare runs... but not actually racing against a real person (it did have that, but I didn't enjoy it very much). Would a leaderboard only type component be completely reliant on PSN+? That game also allowed sharing of cars and other items between PSN users, and I'm guessing that would be completely eliminated for me too.

I can't remember if leaderboards were part of Xbox Live Gold or not.
But to fix your other problem, just buy a 1 month membership.

But you also have to factor in the free games. Even if you're not playing all the time, you should at least get on your system at least once a week to claim the free games. Once you do that, they're tied to your system forever. You lose access if your Plus membership ends, but once you restart plus, you get access to every game that you added in the past.
So there is incentive to maintaining Plus, even if you're not playing online.

He did it wrong.
You gotta stand up....tilt your head back just a bit...extend your arm...and just let it fall.
Still pretty badass.

Oh and Polygon got a response from Sony:

"As announced last night, PS4 will not have any gating restrictions for used disc-based games. When a gamer buys a PS4 disc they have right to use that copy of the game, so they can trade-in the game at retail, sell it to another person, lend it to a friend, or keep it forever."
The Sony representative also confirmed that the Online Pass program used in some Sony first-party games on PS3 would not be used at all for its titles on PS4.

Since Sony isn't requiring + for things like Netflix, I would imagine they aren't going to be more restrictive than Microsoft on the way games work online.

Which is the way it should be. Make the used game buyer deal with online passes instead of criminalizing the user base that buys new.
