That is what my money is on, but a lot of people online are convinced it's the first true teaser trailer and information on Zelda U. I don't think so, but we shall see soon.

Went ahead and snagged a Pro Controller. Anyone have anything negative to say about it? Looks like it closely follows the shape of the 360 controller, so I figured I'd be good.

I bought one as well, the only difference I noticed; is that the X and Y buttons are switched compared to the 360/One controllers.

I was just going to use the Wii Pro Controller I have, but decided to try the newer one. :D

Dammit! I think the pro controller is delaying my order because it is currently out of stock on their site...

I don't think they'll reveal any new games at the show. Hopefully they'll do another blowout January Nintendo Direct like they did this year. That was amazing.

Fuuuuck Zelda and Metroid. Enough already. Give me some WaveRace, F-Zero, Icarus...hell anything we haven't seen on consoles in a few years.

I think you've got that backwards, chief.

I wish we could get an Eternal Darkness sequel on the Wii U using the full capabilities of the gamepad. :(

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

I've grown so accustomed over the last 20 years to Nintendo's backwards button layout (B followed by A, Y followed by X) that Microsoft's layout seems wrong. I've never owned an Xbox, and I can't imagine how maddening it would be going back and forth between the two.

Remember how strange it seemed in 1995 when Sony introduced shapes instead of letters or numbers? It was the most bizarre horseshit we'd ever seen. These days, I prefer it over everything else. Damn them to hell if they ever change it. When I'm old and grey and they're releasing the PS15, I wanna see that triangle, square, cross, and circle, in the exact same place they've always been. Assuming, of course, that gaming systems still need buttons by then.

As for the Wii U, do people really dislike the gamepad so much that they feel the need to get a Pro Controller? If that's the case, then go for it, but I seem to be the only one who has no complaints about the gamepad at all.

Nope, I said compared to the 360/One controller.

I did not say that the Nintendo controller switched the buttons, since that has been their layout.

Be less anal :D

Personally I don't pay much attention to what the buttons are labeled as I do the functions relative to layout. What I mean is, if I were playing Super Mario World on the Xbox somehow, it doesn't matter what letters are on the buttons as long as you jump with the bottom button and run/throw fireballs with the left button. The Sony layout (in Western Countries anyway) is similar to the Xbox in that regard, since both consoles use the bottom button to confirm a selection and the right button to cancel/go back. Nintendo does it the other way around, and yes, it is a bit confusing when you go back and forth.

I think these days the colors are more important than the labels, as they help you process onscreen prompts faster (this a pet peeve I have with Nintendo's consoles as they don't use colored buttons). The Ouya even decided to just use colors only.

They couldn't move my ID. Someone else had saved games on my first WiiU using a different account. It would wipe the whole system. So, IndyMike it is. It's linked to Club Nintendo though.

That sucks. Nintendo really needs to get with the times and get this ID thing going.

Going between Xbox and WiiU is annoying. Your preference of placement makes sense but Nintendo doesn't seem to adhere to any kind of standard.

I don't get this though. Who looks at the controller? My favorite controller is the monochromatic 360 pad. Just classy looking. I think the colorful buttons makes the controllers look like toys.

It's not that the buttons need colors; obviously I'm not looking down at the controller and matching them while playing. I just think onscreen prompts can be followed more quickly if they are colored (especially in things like QTEs in which you have to make very quick decisions about which buttons to press).

That doesn't necessarily mean the controller actually has to have colors, but it's a catch-22 in that in order for developers to use colors in their prompts, the default controller needs to have colored buttons. So I guess my ideal scenario is to have the regular controller with colors but also release a version without them.

I like what the Xbox One did in making the letters colored instead of the whole button though.

I got it for Multiplayer action in Mario, etc. not because I don't like the gamepad. It's fine to me.

At < $200 I'd buy the Wii U again. Sales went up astronomically with the release of Super Mario 3D.

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Speaking of a cheaper Wii U, there's an article on Wired that mentioned a tweet with an idea I find very intriguing: what if Nintendo were to "patch out" GamePad support and relaunch the Wii U with the classic controller only at $200? (Although, I think $200 is optimistic right now, because even if you drop a $150 controller you need to replace it with a $50 one.)

It sounds crazy, but it just might work. I'd say dropping support for the GamePad is going too far, but what if it were an optional accessory rather than bundled?

RichC2 12-06-13 10:13 AM

Re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

It's possible and it may help them, and I'd like the option to use a classic remote on everything, period.

But doesn't that deter a little of what Nintendo was trying to do? It'd be like the Xbox One going out without the Kinect.

Oh wait, nevermind, I see it now.

Surprised those replacement tablet controllers aren't out there. PS4 and Xbox One controllers are already $60, so Nintendo should have no problem fitting that thing in that price range. There is nothing in the Wii U controller that suggests it actually costs that much to manufacture - a low resolution, resistive touchscreen, standard controller elements, gyro, speaker, and whatever streaming chip it's using.

$300 - $150 + $50 = $200 so they could easily do it if they made all games support the controller.
