It feels weird that the entirety of Wii Sports is $50 since it was free in the US. Although I imagine most people would only want bowling and maybe tennis anyway. Expensive.

Zero interest on either of those titles.

$50 for a 10 year old Zelda and $50 for a game* that was previously free. Nintendo. Milk it for all it's worth.

*I assume the WiiSports thing is literal and it's only the original 4 sports from the first game?

5: golf, baseball, boxing, tennis, bowling.

They haven't said anything about the Wii Sports Resort minigames being part of this, as far as I can find.

Not interested in these, but I am glad to see Nintendo experiment with price and delivery models.

I have a feeling if MS tried that, they'd be crucified for it.

Yeah, definite pass on those. Not interested whether they were free or not.

When Sony does it, it's cool!

Assuming you mean Sony, could you provide an equivalent for something Sony's done like this?

I think the day pass concept is pretty clever and reasonably priced. I don't think Wii Sports is a $50 game by any stretch of the imagination, but I could see myself paying $20 for the two minigames in it that people actually like. :)

When Sony does it they cram 3 full games onto a blu-ray and release it for under $40. And they're usually not very hyped.

Well, there's the recent Kingdom Hearts release that's $40 too.

Kingdom Hearts isn't Sony.

So for that $40 do they do the extent of work that Nintendo did for WW?

Again, apparently it's cool when Sony releases titles but when Nintendo does it it's not.

Fuck it. WW in like 2 hours!!!!

I'm confused as to which games Sony has released that are cool, but when Nintendo does it, it is not cool.

Adam Tyner 09-19-13 09:47 PM

Haters gonna hate. Apologists gonna apologize.

I'm really excited about Wind Waker, but it's undeniable that Nintendo's pricing for their remakes is wildly out whack with what everyone else is doing nowadays. There is no justification beyond the fact that Nintendo can get away with it.

Yeah. Until this week, I forgot that I gave my copy of Super Mario Sunshine to my kid brother years ago, and when I looked into replacing it, I was pretty turned off by the prices. I'm sure it's even more extreme for Wind Waker.

Nintendo's past has currency that few other publishers can claim, and they know it. I'm not balking at the price for Wind Waker (heck, I preordered when Amazon listed it for ten dollars more), but I can still recognize that it's far, far, far out of line with the rest of the industry, even taking the additional effort here into account.

I just don't know where you got that it was cool when Sony releases titles. I don't know anyone that hypes any of the Sony compilations, and frankly most of them suffer from issues. If Nintendo released a Zelda compilation with Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask (I can't remember how much the disc was on the Gamecube, but they were literally ROMs emulated) and Wind Waker then yeah, that'd be cool. Or even if Wind Waker came with Phantom Hourglass, then it'd be like the Kingdom Hearts re-release which includes Chain of Memories for $39 (though Chain of Memories was remade from GBA for the PS2)

I don't think i've seen any other re-releases treated like a big, normal release that Wind Waker is from Nintendo.

re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Come to think of it, me neither. Wind Waker is the best looking game on two consoles now (GC and Wii U), so it's definitely been updated a good bit.

Actually, it may be tied with RE4 on the GC, remember being blown away when I first saw that game, but its been a while.

No, not really. Check out some before & after pics. It hasn't been updated much more than most other HD updates. It's due to it's cel-shaded look that it's aged so well.

re: The Wii U: From "cool" Sony to evil Nintendo

Yeah, I've seen a good deal of the before and after, the color is bolder on the Gamecube but there are a lot of new visual effects, and a lot more detail on the Wii U edition. I'd still argue it isn't a $50 overhaul, but for a 3D to 3D game, it has been updated more than any other similar release.

It doesn't fix my core complaint with the game, but it is a nice update. The Cel-shade looked good then, looks great now. I've played an HD version of Wind Waker in the past, the added detail is quite nice

Subtle, but it is much more than most get.

Ocarina of Time was a pretty big deal for the 3DS.

Super Mario 64 DS was a launch title.

All of the 'classic' NES Mario Games were re-released on GBA with updated bla bla bla.

Nintendo seems to do more when it updates a title for re-release vs just slapping it on a disc/cart and calling it a day (not talking about VC releases at all).

WW seems to have gotten the most love from Nintendo and at $50 it's a pretty good deal. But who cares, it's gonna sell and plenty of people who never had a chance to play WW will play it.
