How great of a name is the Wii, Playstation, or Xbox? Or even Gameboy? i agree that Wii U sounds like Wii University, but otherwise we'll all get used to it.

Think of all the stupid names we've managed to come up with for vagina over the years, and yet most of us still put our penises into them.

Re: The Official E3 Expo 2011 Thread (June 6-9, 2011)

If Nintendo really wants to give the hardcore gamer what they want, while maintaining the brand power and basic capabilities of the Wii, the new console should have:

-- a less ridiculous name (Wii HD would have been just fine)
-- the muscle to do 1080p60 with texture/lighting/etc capabilities that exceed the current gen competitors
-- a robust network for online multiplayer
-- an ergonomic classic controller/wiimote hybrid that includes:
* rumble
* enough motion+ sensing technology to replace the sideways wiimote for games like NSMBW and Donkey Kong Country Returns that have tacked-on motion
* internal speaker
* pointing capability that allows it to act as a pointer ala the wiimote, but when held in a normal two-hand configuration

I'm not sure where they got the idea that hardcore gamers' primary desire is a tablet touchscreen controller. And I'm not even a hardcore gamer.

The only way they're going after hardcore gamer is by giving it specs comparable to the current gen systems. Everything else is still the Wii. They're sticking with what they think worked with the first one, but bumping up the horsepower to attract Call of Duty and Madden developers.

Have you forgotten their handheld dominance in that era?

So, if anyone is actually there, could you please check out that 360 wireless driving peripheral and post impressions? It looks kind of cool and I'd buy one (being the peripheral sucker that I am) if it's actually pretty good and responsive.

My wife has one of those. I don't think it's a video game peripheral though.

The GBA? No, I hadn't forgotten about it. It's simply not relevant, as they literally had no real competition in that space during the GBA era.

But it didn't sell very well and didn't attract many developers, did it?

N64's main problem was that they decided to go cartridge based instead of CD-ROM based like they originally intended. It'd be interesting to see what the console wars would be like today if they hadn't changed their minds...

The next time she invites one of her girlfriends over for a little 2-player co-op, you might want to stick around then.

That's supposed to be for Forza 4 and Kinect. I mean, that's its main use.

I still think Wii is the worst of those by far. PlayStation works as a takeoff of "workstation." Xbox makes sense because it's a box that uses DirectX, and it has another meaning as they add more media functions (not a "game box" or "movie box," but a box for anything, as in X). Even Gameboy worked back in the day, since it was the mini version of the NES, and, let's face it, those systems were considered toys back then anyway.

Wii just made no sense outside of their abstract explanations (like each i representing a person? really?), and Wii U is even worse. But, we'll get used to it.

The demo of this is up on XBL - love, love, LOVE the art style. And apparently the fighting it a lot more nuanced than the demo lets on. Count me in for this.

I don't think that controller has anything to do with Kinect (other than the fact that it comes out timed to Forza 4 and you can track your head in Forza 4 with Kinect). It's supposedly compatible with every driving/racing game. I think it might be preferable to a controller pad for some racing games and I don't have the space, money or inclination to buy yet another steering wheel set up.

Yeah, that's what I was referring, that it will "work" better with Kinect. It should work fine by itself too.

Are any big announcements or news conferences slated? Or is everything else just open show floor?
