Except you might be at a disadvantage since the screen is probably smaller than the television, you won't be able to glance over and see what other people are doing in the same game, and the controller is likely to be less intuitive than the Wii Remote.

I get that they were hearing that from developers, I just think they've already missed the boat. Let's assume that the Wii U has about equal quality graphics, equally priced games and is relatively reasonably priced. Would you, as a representative "core gamer", buy one of your "must-have" third-party games on a Wii U over a 360 pr PS3 version? If it had exclusive cool features like the example given for Batman Arkham City with the pad-enabled Detective Vision, or a pad-sniper scope for CoD for example? For me, that's still a likely "no" since a comfortable controller and my online Friends are more important than a cool new gimmick (or so I believe today).
And if the core gamer isn't going to buy his favorite multiplatform games on a Wii U, then the only reason to buy one is for the Nintendo published games anyway. Unless, like I said, playing games on the tablet controller turns out to be a really big deal. It might be for dorm rooms, shared TVs and the like. Anyway, there's still lots we don't know.

So yeah, after a year it will be back to being a console for first party games and any possible exclusive third party titles.
Exactly. With big HD sets split 4 ways you're still going to be a lot larger than 6". I also got to thinking, people better watch tossing out prices they are willing to pay since that's how we got an overpriced $250 3DS.

I can't believe that for the next generation of consoles I even have to ask this question, but...will this thing be able to play DVDs?

Damn you Groucho!Pikmin 3 is the first step in winning me over. It seems like the perfect game to showcase the tablet.

Here's one write-up: http://e3.gamespot.com/story/6318076...eview-hands-on
However, this is hardly the killer app that shows the controller's potential. Even if that particular game is fun, I'm still not sold.

No, I didn't read it. I do know though that if I'm playing a console game I'd rather be looking at the TV than at a handheld screen.
But my complaint wasn't directed at whatever game is shown there, but rather what that picture implies for the rest of the multiplayer games; that one player is going to be stuck playing on a handheld screen.
Like I said though, I hope there's an option to just play without it, sort of like how you can play some games with just the Game Cube Controller on the Wii after going through the start-up with the Wii Remote.

but why would you exert all that effort running around outside when you can have the same basic experience on a video game console?

Not totally abandon. They could release a single "new" game at least once every month. Pretty much what Pinata said: there will be a lot of squandered potential. But really, I am very used to that with Nintendo. GBA e-reader, gba link to game cube, a single DDR Mario game, no more Chibi-Robos, etc.

LOS ANGELES, Jun (Reuters) – The launch of Nintendo Co Ltd's next-generation Wii console failed to address investor concerns the firm is missing the gaming market's shift to social networking, sending its shares tumbling to a five-year low.
The Wii U, complete with a new touchscreen controller, is aimed at winning back hardcore gamers from rivals such as Microsoft Corp's Xbox and won early praise from industry critics at its launch at the E3 videogame expo on Tuesday.
But Nintendo shares closed down 5.7 percent in Japan on Wednesday, hitting levels not seen since before the original Wii was launched to rave reviews in late 2006.
Investors said they were worried Nintendo remained too centered on hardware as the market increasingly shifts to a battleground over software, with games played over Internet networks linking millions of players.
"Although some experts seem to like the new device, I expected Nintendo to move more into the social networking business," said Mitsuo Shimizu, deputy general manager at Cosmo Securities in Tokyo.
"It's a warning from investors that the company should reconsider its business strategy and move more aggressively into social gaming operations."
Nintendo's president Satoru Iwata dismissed questions about the new console's lack of emphasis on network capabilities and said the company's hit games had always been social.
"It's not that we're negative about the network, but if we ignore those customers who don't link their game consoles up to the Internet, that goes against our strategy of expanding the games market," he told reporters in a roundtable. "We are just trying not to shrink our own market."
Industry critics in early reviews praised the innovation embodied by the separate device, larger than Apple Inc's iPhone, but smaller than the iPad.
The new controller has camera and video-call capability, plus an array of buttons and functions that might entice gamers who play longer and more intensely.
"Nintendo is ahead of the curve for once," said Wedbush analyst Michael Pachter. "It can do anything a tablet can do and people might be asking, why can't my iPad 2 do this kind of gaming too?"

So offering an online structure for one group of gamers shrinks the pool of consumers that don't want their console online? These two things are not mutually exclusive.

Do these investors actually understand the concept of gaming when it comes to social networking?

If you could use the tablet controller like a mouse and keyboard in one with no input lag, I think some FPSers would love it. Nintendo is definitely still behind the curve in thinking that they can't cater to the local social gamer, the local lone gamer, and the online variant of each at the same time. Pretty archaic thinking there.

Ugh. Why can't Nintendo just give us decent online gameplay for once? Is that so much to ask?

if they add online it's not going to make people who don't use online stop buying the system, that's ludicrous.

I love how everyone thinks Nintendo is as dumb as a bag of rocks. They only sold 40 million Wiis.

FWIW, my daughter nearly fell out of her chair with laughter when I deadpanned the answer to her question of "What is the new Nintendo console going to be called?". I'm guessing there weren't too many ten-year old girls on the system-naming focus group.

Nintendo remains adament that they will focus on a non-internet based customer -- those are children and old people -- all of which just got a Wii and my kids aren't getting another one anytime soon.

I think they're missing the mark this time. 5 years ago social networking was just coming on the scene. Now it's unavoiadble. Your signature alone has 3 links to social networking sights.
