Oh my god. I would have thrown that screen down, stomped it and took a shit on it by the 2 minute mark.

Seriously, wtf is that shit? It's like they took everything about the Wii that made it so great (simplicity, intuitiveness, innovation) and did the exact opposite. Video games are supposed to be fun; that looked so damn tedious and awkward. I really hope the first-party games have options to turn that nonsense off.

If by "try" you mean limiting game discs to 1.3GB, offering no online support and launching with a purple cube then I totally agree. They couldn't have possibly tried any harder to appeal to the hardcore crowd.

As far as many folks are concerned, online multiplayer gaming might as well not exist on the Wii, since its needlessly convoluted Friend Code system -- designed to keep kids safe from the perils of Internet denizens -- makes life so much more difficult than the username-based setup on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3. Apparently, Nintendo has heard the hardcore's cries, and for the Wii U, is replacing Friend Codes with system that supports a specific username for each person, instead of just a twelve-digit alphanumeric sequence for each console.
The news comes from a demo of the Wii U version of Ghost Recon Online that Ubisoft gave to MTV Multiplayer, who pressed producer Adrian Blunt for multiplayer details. "Rather than a machine having an account, each individual user has an account," he explained, saying that the system is "exactly" equivalent to, say, Gamertags on Xbox Live. Blunt also said that the Wii U offers "a much easier way" to connect players than Friend Codes. But he didn't confirm whether the Wii U also features a console-wide system resembling Achievements/Trophies, saying, "I... can't answer that at the moment."

I wonder what they should call the awards. How about Stars? Mario has been collecting those for a while. Or, maybe Shines like in Mario Sunshine?
BTW, I don't think the Gamecube's disc size was really a problem. Multiplatform titles didn't tend to suffer for it. Sure, a few games needed more than one disc, but that's also true of the 360. But then again, maybe the real problem was the perception that games were being cut down to fit, even if they actually weren't. And of course, the form factor meant the system couldn't play DVDs either (except the Panasonic Q - damn, I wanted one of those).

I read that as "designed to keep kids safe from the penises of Internet denizens."Seriously though, at least Nintendo is rectifying the god awful mess that was online gameplay for the Wii. A lot of my friends and I now live in different cities and states and if online gameplay had been easier to access I know we'd have played Mario Kart Wii and Super Smash Bros. Brawl a lot.

While that video is stupid, I wouldn't put much stock in it. All that crap at E3 was just developed to show the most basic demonstrations for the kinds of things that will be possible with the system/controller. Don't worry, Crazy Plunger Pirate Shooters won't be a launch title.

I don't think the touch screen controller is a bad idea. If anything, the console RPG genre would benefit from it - you could have your inventory/spells/etc on the touch screen - which might enable a way to play WOW on a console.
But Nintendo is selling it as a gimmick right now, and it's not going over well.

They had black available at launch. The discs were smaller but they loaded very fast (and it was probably "enough" space just like DVD has been enough space this gen). And the PS2 had jack for online support also at that point...it was pretty much just the xbox with any sort of online back then.

Spent the day at E3 today. I think i'm over these conventions; its nice to skip work and walk around for a day, but waiting in line to play a game for 5 minutes isn't very fun to me, nor spending hours to check out any of the new consoles.
Although it was worth the 15 minutes waiting for Brothers in Arms for the free beer.

The part where he just starts shaking it at the end per the game's request is just embarrassing.
EDIT: "Nicely doooooooone!!!!"
So condescending...

That video brings up one my my biggest [undiscussed] problems with the Wii. 25 pop-ups every couple minutes. Nothing says immersion like a spam window telling you something you already knew. Also love the pop up save windows. Nintendo - "Background saving is hard."

I feel like some of these companies are missing out on opportunities. I would buy a 360 right now if Killer Instinct 3 was being made. Also, Wii U would be a lock if there was any hint of Eternal Darkness 2 being made. I guess Eternal Darkness wasn't such a huge hit, but I thought KI was a really popular franchise. I guess I was wrong?
Then again, maybe it has to do with rights being tied up. I remember when a remastered version of GoldenEye was going to come out, but they could never get Nintendo and Microsoft to agree to the various terms. Sigh...
