Can't wait for the eventual "playing halo hd for the first time!" Thread.

Different medium, different expectations. Why put that much work into a total remake when Halo 4 is also in the works? Also it says all the audio will likely be used so it definitely sounds more like an HD-ified version over remake.

At this point though it's anyone's guess. My gut says it's simply Halo:HD with tweaks to make it feel more modern... which, BTW, is the bare minimum they need to do and still sell a few million copies. Not to mention, Gears is the 360 exclusive this holiday. I doubt they want this overshadowing it.

I was a huge fan of the first, but I couldn't make it through reach. The whole thing just seems played out to me. Nothing new and original (well the space-battles were refreshing, but nothing I didn't do on the N64 15 years ago). I consider most Halo games at this point a remake.

The positive buzz is puzzling to me. I thought everyone hated remakes?

I thought the original Halo was okay, the open and "emergent" combat was always the number one thing about the single player for me, but the repetition and especially the library killed the pacing for me.

That's one of the things I like least about Halo. I've always disliked the art style, it never like a living breathing world, more like a generic 3d generated landscape.

I have a feeling they are going to milk this for a full $59.99 since they are redoing assets, etc.

Never had that problem with the original. One of the better FPS worlds, the sequels kind of got messy with the cheese whiz.

I doubt they'll milk it for $59.99. $39.99 seems high to me still but I think thats where it will end up.

Quick general question for those that aren't hot on the original Halo, did you play it in 2001 or much later?

I doubted they'd release ODST with its short, inconsequential single player story and almost no new multiplayer content for $59.99. But they did anyway.

I like the original Halo but I'll still chime. I played it the night xbox came out after standing in line for hours at Meijer. I loved it instantly, especially the co-op.

I played it in 2001 and never cared for it at all. The reason for me is that I am primarily a PC gamer. Halo was a decent console FPS, but there really wasn't many console FPS to compare it to at the time. On the PC it was a very different story since there were tons of better PC FPS out there.

2001 or 2002. Not particularly impressive at that time.

I think HD versions of previous gen games is a good thing though, so more power to the people excited for this.

If it's priced reasonably I may pick it up.

I remember right after it came out playing through the entire game in one sitting with my college roommate, finishing around 6:30 in the morning, and still making it to my 7:45 class.

Other than the PC angle where FPS games dominate, I don't get this at all. We're talking about going from Goldeneye and Turok to Halo on consoles. It was fucking revolutionary at the time.

Re: Halo: Combat Evolved remake - November 15, 2011

It was the original that actually got me signed up on DVD Talk and when I first started playing online. This was back when there was "DVD Talk Clan". I think it was Halo that brought lot of people to DVD Talk because many were just looking for fun social on-line playing and most of what you got in Halo online was childish PITA brats. So more came and signed up and it was so much fun with custom matches in Halo. Some good memories and times back then.

The "PC angle" is a pretty big deal and exactly why Halo didn't/doesn't impress me. There's not much to "get."

There's no denying Halo paved the way for FPS on a console in a legitimate way.

No, for some reason, the Xbox still doesn't support keyboard/mouse input, but the genre is more than playable, even competitively.

That's what I'm saying. I understand that if you are coming from a PC background, Halo could be seen as "run of the mill" but for the console crowd it was something unique that hadn't been done before. For a console gamer to shrug it off in 2001 seems shortsighted, or possibly coming from a "console war/I'm a PS2 guy" angle... and there was a metric ton of that shit on this board back then.

Pretty much nailed it...back then the "PC vs Console War" started. It was pc purists and avid gamers calling the console a "Arcade Machine" with no skill involved. Console owners shot back saying they spent more time and money upgrading and fixing software and hardware issues than laying back and enjoying the games. And remember we also had that mega speed 56K.

...and yes I did play a lot on the pc before the XBOX. Unreal Tournament was and is my all-time favorite to this day.

Deus Ex came out a year before Halo and it was leaps and bounds better than anything Halo offered. Its such a shame Deus Ex never reached the popularity of Halo.

I wonder if the hate was more a result of an Avatar-like backlash -- not so much "this game sucks" as much as "this game isn't nearly as good as all the hype I've been hearing for months would have led me to believe".

Could be. All my friends were there day one. I didn't get it until a year later. I was at a tremendous disadvantage for quite some time. All of us were console guys though, so that helps paint where I was coming from.
