Breaking it down into random genre's seem funny to me with the only purpose to mention games that you like but aren't quite the best of the year (Groucho's post not withstanding)

Mostly, that was the reason, yes. It's difficult for me to compare something like Mass Effect 2, which is story based and essentially close-ended to a racing or rhythm game, which are played totally differently.

Mass Effect 2 gets my vote for game of the year as well.

Edit to add: My Disappointment of the year goes to Fable 3
