Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
Apparently 1 million have been sold worldwide. Not too shabby.

No, but Microsoft's projection of five million units before the end of the year seems pretty unlikely, don't you think?

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
Doesn't MS use actual sold numbers instead of "shipped?" If so, 1 million in 10 days seems pretty damn impressive.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
The Kinect uses projected IR light (actually an IR laser and a lens with a gobo) to create tracking points. The IR camera picks up the IR light points. It determines depth based on displacement of these light points.
It is likely that the store light environment was way too bright and washed out the IR light. It works much better in a standard living room. I can see 5M by the end of the year with Christmas coming up. Don't forget that $300 now buys you an Xbox 360 + Kinect. That will be a popular item. |
Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
I dunno. Four million more units in the next six weeks, after you remove the early adopters and most of the eBay hoarders? Without any new games for the system except the usually poor selling Harry Potter movie tie-in? We'll see I guess.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
Any word on EA Sports Active 2? Out today and it's a bit expensive ($99) but since it comes with a heart rate monitor and online tracking I can let that slide.
IMO, exercise gaming could be a huge selling point for the Kinect -- though $250 is a bit much (Kinect + EA Active in this case) -- if they can make an interactive version of say P90X that'd be pretty badass... or better by taking your mind off the workout. |
Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
The dance game looked fun, but my 360 is is my room and I don't have room for any other stuff. Maybe, when I move, and they get some more games.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
I am sooooo tempted to get this for the Zumba, dance, and fitness games. How are the fitness and dance games in particular?

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
Keeping an eye on reviews and holiday sales for 360s.
I'm not impressed with what I'm seeing now and have a hard time imagining how to develop good games for something so imprecise. It kind of reminds me of gaming on the iPhone...good for a few casual and niche games but limited by lack of precision in the controls. |
Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
You'll likely remain unimpressed. This is very much a device for the casual market, and it works amazingly well for what it does, but what it does is somewhat limited - both conceptually and in practice.

I can't wait to see if we get some XBLA titles using Kinect. I'm also interested in seeing the incorporation of a controller and voice commands in games.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
I played ping pong last night for 2 hours straight. my arms are sore as heck this morning. I am still not very good at it, but I am having a blast. Playing online is terrific. It is hilarious to see my avatar and the opponent's avatar taunting each other back and forth (not trash talking just gestures). It is amazing how real ping pong is on the kinect.

Looks like soon we'll have a need to put that couch in the play area between us and Kinect: http://www.destructoid.com/rumor-gea...n-187866.phtml

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
As mentioned in Pinata's link, he only denied Kinect in GoW3, so people are speculating about a new Gears game/minigames? using Kinect.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
Picked up Active 2 and tried out a few things on my break.
The game is, presentation wise, a little too sterile/"professional" for my taste and does fully present itself like a piece of workout equipment. The heart rate monitor is large but works great, the band is an adjustable ribbon type. The motion tracking works great though the mapping to animation leaves something to be desired (it isn't nearly as impressive as it is in the avatar-based games where every slight movement is recreated). I ran through a few of the activities -- non-exercise specific ones like Dodgeball, Soccer Goalie, Biking, and Boxing. They all worked pretty well, though the weak animation mapping hurt Dodgeball a little bit, but nothing big. As for the exercise itself, it took no time for my heart rate to hit 150 and for me to start sweating, especially on the cardio boxing. In all it looks to be a pretty solid package, we'll see how it turns out, and I haven't had a chance to mess around with the online features yet. |
Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
Does it has plans?

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
Yes. The first was a 9 week plan, didn't see what the other(s) were.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
I gave in, the kids have won this round. I picked up a 250GB Kinect console at Costco...now to sell my Resident Evil LE 360 on craigslist :(

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
Thinking of picking up either Your Shape or Active 2. Was hoping for some reviews today, but havent seen any.

Re: Kinect: Are you buying one?
Has there been any reviews of the Harry Potter game? 40% off that with a $20gc with Assassin's Creed Brotherhood might be something I look at.
