The game looks much better on pc. I know it should, but when I compare this to say Just Cause 2 pc vs ps3/xbox there is something wrong here. Just Cause 2 is a better looking game...and on the computer it looks great at max settings, obviously better than the 360 version, but it is not shockingly better. The 360 version still looks great, and on a big tv from my bed there is not enough difference to make the pc a must have.

Mafia 2 is an average looking game on pc, but the 360 version is a mess.

The xbox version of Just Cause 2 is to me about 80% as good as the pc version at max settings..

The xbox version of Mafia 2 is less than 50% as good as the pc version. When you consider the fact that Mafia 2 is not an amazing game to start with...what happened??? Maybe I am making to big a deal out of this, but it just screams laziness on their part when it comes the 360 port.
So weird. I run a pretty decent gaming rig my cousin made for me 6 months ago (Intel Quad core processor. 2.67 GHz, 4 GB RAM and a single 5770 card) -- nothing like your behemoth, mind you. It looked okay for the first half of the demo - even the shootout in the street ran fine, but once I got into the warehouse, it became a slide-show. The frame rate dropped from the 40s to 15. The game became unplayable. I tried to drop some of the settings and it made no difference. It's the first game I've found that's unplayable on my machine.
This will be a PS3 purchase for me if I end up buying it.

Normally, I put zero stock in exclusive advance reviews, especially foreign ones, and especially when there's not a link to the review. But this capsule doesn't sound so good:

That is strange since I would figure outside, with more stuff for the computer to work on, that the frame rate would drop. I found in a lot of games, like Oblivion, that the frame rate always went up when you went in doors...Could be a glitch with the demo that will not show up in the game, especially since dropping the settings did not help.

As for that early review, the part that I found most disappointing is the game length. A game that has any sort of exploring in it should not be so short. 14 hours would be amazing for a linear shooter but for a sandbox game (though I hear this really does not play like a sandbox game) to be that short...sort of how screwed I felt with the length of Halo ODST....

Re: Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

Played the demo on the 360..........I don't get all the hype, It was decent but nothing special. The graphics are an actual mix of GTA 4 & Saints Row 2 (more SR2 heavy though) which was a huge let down for me as well considering I was expecting them to be much better (Sorry but nobody does the sandbox environments better than Rockstar).

Gameplay wise....it's cool that it only takes a couple of shots to take someone out and to also die yourself but the cover system and combat in general don't compensate nowhere near enough for it.

Maybe the actual game will be much better but we'll see. Don't think I would buy it.

the graphics on the pc are a ton better looking then anything Rockstar has done. 360 would be visually better if it had AA

Re: Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

This game wasn't on my radar but for some reason decided to download the demo from Steam. And I was actually surprised. It looks pretty fine for an open world game, you can't expect FPS graphics, of course, but it's a big improvement for games like this.

I just completed the main story of the demo and thought was pretty entertaining. I will try to check the demo in the Xbox later this weekend. I played with keyboard and mouse in the PC and I barely could drive.

Hey, screw you - I'm the one that does the yelling around here!

BTW, are they throwing the exclusive dlc bone to the PS3 version because that version's more sub-par than the 360?

Has there been any info as to which of the two console versions performs better?

Bleh. Kind of a low score, but I still ordered the CE. What can I say? I have a soft spot for steel cases.

The reviews at Joystiq and Kotaku are a little better. One says that the game is a good rental, and the other is a little bit more enthusiast.

Why don't you read the review and decide for yourself?

I think it is, but I liked the demo.....

Re: Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

This sucks. I got an email from Amazon saying it may be delayed due to weather or some unforeseen event. It shows it's in their hub about an hour from me, and the three other packages I ordered with a delivery date for today all say "Out for delivery."

Oh well, looks like a free promotional certificate for me.

Re: Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

This game already has an update...I don't know if that's normal. Also didn't know I was getting two dlc's so that's pretty cool. Will be back later with thoughts.

Re: Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

I got the game, it wasn't delayed after all. Stupid UPS.

Anyway, I like it so far. Kind of stupid how if you get killed sometimes you have to start over a ways back. Also, I had a new car and ran over a small waste basket and it looked like the car had been smashed with a sledgehammer.

The music is great, the scenery is great, but the cars are a bit hard to drive though.

Oh and Gamespot gave it an 8.5. Seems much more fair.

On PS3? I got it on the 360, and it loads fine.

I'm through the first 8 chapters. This game is amazing. Simple as that, the controls could be better, but the story makes up for all the short comings.

Re: Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

It's much different than I was expecting. I knew it was going to be pretty linear, but thus far it's been more on the extreme side of that IMO. Not that I'm complaining. In a game like this I'm more than ok with a directed experience. I'm loving it so far. (Got up to Chapter 5 last night.)

Re: Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

Yeah, it is totally linear. I got to chapter five, too, and I had put in maybe 2 hours. I think there's 14 or 25 chapters in the game.

As long as you can play after the last chapter, it'll still be cool. The steel case from the CE is really nice.

Oh and a nice touch by the developers putting some music from the first game on the Classics radio station

Yeah, I noticed that too. Cool inclusion.

I've rolled through Chapter 3 or 4 so far. Great storytelling, even if it's a little too familiar to the last game. If there's a Mafia 3, I'd love to see them jump to the 60s, 70s.

X-Play gave it 4 Stars which is pretty good:

Re: Mafia 2 thread so slop does not get yelled at!

I hate the saving in this game. I just started chapter 7. I start the chapter, go rob some stores to build up some cash, steal some clothes, tune up my car, change my plates, and am on my way to a mission objective.

I get killed, and I am all the way back to the start of chapter 7, cutscene and all. No money, no new clothes, no progress.
