Might as well. It's not like those hackey sack hippies would ever consider them anyway.

All good hair metal suggestions.

But they need more Def Leppard in the game. Foolin is not enough. Lets get some of the awesome Pyromania and Hysteria and older songs from the first albums.

Not like there is anything RB related to talk about anyway. Who cares.

We can talk about how two of those Soundgarden songs will more than likely be Black Hole Sun and Spoonman! Wooo!

Don't even go there ;). Seriously, I could spend pages on the subject. Anywwwwayyy, we'll move back towards RB. Black Hole Sun and Spoonman would be nice welcome back to my library suggestions for songs...but I believe Rusty Cage or The Day I Tried to Live would be nice additions to the catalog.

According to this thread over at RB.com, the Squier has been discontinued. I didn't go through the whole thing (read the first 4-5 pages) and I guess we won't get an official statement until later today, or even next week when people are back from E3.

I don't like this. I've been wanting to pick one up because I think it'll help me finally have the discipline to sit and learn to play my guitar (I've just been practicing very basic chord work here and there, but nothing on a regular basis), but I don't want to be forced to pick it up right now while I still have the chance. There's a good chance I'll just skip it and then maybe/maybe not regret it later.

I agree with the above. I have an electric guitar at home, it's a very nice epiphone, I got it off somebody who was moving and just didn't have room for it. I have how-to books, videos, the whole nine, just have a devil sticking with it. The Squier would have been a very good way for me to try and stick with it. Now, I have to figure out whether to pluck down the money or get very lucky down the road (or end up with nothing at all).

Hmmm...wonder what this means for "pro-mode" and/or the Mustang? I wanted one but was waiting on a price drop or sale. Looks like I will just skip it all together.

Have the pro-modes or the Mustang been selling well? How were the sales on the Squier?

Speaking from experience, I would just get a teacher. A game might show you what frets to push, but it won't show you proper technique or be able to point out the flaws in your playing and help you correct them. Plus Squire is such a shit brand of guitar, it's not even worth it.

Squier is a beginner brand. Although it (and the MiM's) are basically Fender's cheap line of axes, there are some Japanese Squiers from the 80s and 90s that would put many if not most of today's American Standards to shame.

They are still good for beginners though. With proper mods, you could drag it on stage with you and perform respectably.

Good thing I picked it up a couple weeks ago. I was going to keep putting it off, but I finally talked my self into it.

...I was wondering why my Best Buy suddenly went from having 2 on the shelf to none last weekend (They didn't even have a shelf marker for it). I guess this explains why.

Digging through that thread, here is the official HMX response so far. We'll see where this goes.

Community & the senior team are at E3 right now but they've reached out to Fender to find out what's up. This is the first we've heard about this and we'll dig in with Fender for more info ASAP.

Harmonix in the dark about it? Is that surprising?

Shagrath 06-09-11 03:30 PM

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

I'd says it's more their lowly community managers not really knowing what the fuck the company is doing because they don't tell them anything. I'm sure that someone at HMX knew this was coming and just decided it would be best to keep their mouths shut about it.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

For some reason, I'm sitting here reading the whole thread on the RB forums. It took 23 pages for them to post the update Shagrath posted.

I like this response that immediately followed it.

I knew you guys were out of the loop. What sort of contract did you make with Fender that they can pull the plug like this anyway?
Yep. Why is it that HMX is always late to the party when something bad happens related to their product/company?

Shagrath 06-09-11 03:56 PM

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

To their credit, the original post started after they closed shop last night, and most of their people are at E3.

I have to wonder what the real story behind this is though. They have to have had some contract with Fender for this. Either Fender broke their side of things, or the contract was only for 3 months or something ridiculous like that. Maybe they're going to produce a pro guitar with another manufacturer which will be cheaper? I doubt we'll ever find out out the true story.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

Yeah, I didn't notice the times on everything.

I do think it's strange though that they are saying this is the first they've heard of this. They joined in a partnership with Fender to produce these for RB3. I find it hard to believe that Fender pulled the plug and didn't even give them a courtesy call about it.

I'm sure a contract was signed, but if the deal was pretty much "hey, let's make a guitar together!", but Fender had to do all the heavy lifting (lots of the R&D, manufacturing, distribution), then I'm sure they're the ones in the position of power to be able to say "nah, this isn't worth it; done". The Squiers have been listed for special order by stores all over the world for a little while now. If the preorders have been weak, then why wouldn't Fender pull the plug? I think it's lame that they're not fulfilling all of the orders that have come in, but maybe the manufacturing process requires making/selling lots of 'em for it to be worth it financially, and the guitars just aren't hitting those numbers. ...or maybe it's the opposite and the guitars are selling fine, but they just can't produce enough. I have no idea if HMX knew, but it could just be that the people who did know aren't talking about it. Who'd want to do that to themselves, leading up to/during E3 with as vicious as the gaming press can be about rhythm gaming anyway?

I still think launching Rock Band 3 without the Squier was dumb. Best Buy exclusivity probably wasn't a good idea since BB didn't really promote them, which I guess makes sense seeing as how there were so few of the guitars available anyway. As great as the product is, the release was bungled in pretty much every way possible.

So if I had an interest in the Squier, is it worth buying one if I find it in my area?

Or should I just use the time to learn to play a real guitar?

The nice thing about the Squier is that it is a real guitar. As for whether or not it's worth it now...I'd say go with your gut. There's been no word on what we can expect for pro song upgrades in the wake of all this.
