Extrapolating from my friends list (360 only), I find that number very hard to believe. Is that to-date?

Ugh to those sales figures. Did they at least beat GH?

GH6 didn't even sell 100k in its first month. If that's an official number then RB3 sold 140k in less than three weeks, up against top ten sellers Fable 3, Force Unleashed 2 and Smackdown 2011. Also, Kinect and Call of Duty.

Where did you get that number? I'm not able to find anything. Thanks!

From the NPDs that are no longer public.

I mean, I know we're a skewed collective, but how did Rock Band fall off the table? I blame Activision because the average gamer still lumps RB and GH into the same pile. If this is the death of the rhythm genre, it is untimely. If anything Rock Band 3 feels like a transition album. I'm hoping that GH dies, Rock Band stops releasing half-assed Green Day games and HMX gets the backing of someone with a vested interest in the genre succeeding (and a better gameplan for generating revenue with DLC via integrated sales and timely promotion). They're just missing so many opportunities to get people hooked on bands the radio doesn't play (since radio doesn't play music anymore so much as product). I'm a little OCD about seeking out new music but it's exhausting and I wish I didn't waste so much time doing so but I must feed my inner-hipster... and if I can discover new music through Rock Band there's great opportunity to sell more shit if they can just figure out the balance... and stick around long enough to catalyze a revival. But that's all been said before. I'm just typing here.

GH is absolutely to blame. They destroyed the market, not only for their own game, but for the whole genre. It makes me furious thinking about what they've done. *6* Hero titles in 2009, not counting mobile platforms. Would Call of Duty be as insanely popular if they'd released six goddamn variations of the game to retail in one year?

However, the genre itself is also to blame, a little bit anyway. Rock Band in particular is pretty damn popular as a party game, but that's the thing... only one person needs to buy it. Everyone goes over to Joey's house and plays Rock Band. It's not something that everyone who loves Rock Band needs to buy, because one guy has a killer set up and if we want to play it we'll go hang out with him.

Those are from the October NPDs. So from the 10/26-10/31. Granted, this is only from stores that NPD tracks. So NewEgg and the other little places that shipped out early don't count.

I see. What's the sales time period? 3 weeks, just the last week of October, or something else?

Shit, that's hardly a cause for mass panic then. I say we reconvene after the December NPDs come out and look at the sum through the holidays.

For comparison with other games that came out that day..

Fable 3 - 580K (all SKUs)
Smackdown vs. Raw - 225K (all SKUs)

Spoiler:

Tony Hawk Shred - 3K (all SKUs)

I feel like we already had this talk yesterday about RB3 coming in 11th and what launched on the same day (you left out TFUII at 5th, I believe)

Can we also give some credit to the fact that some people just don't want all the plastic "junk" in their house? And each iteration has an increasing amount of "junk". At some point part of that group is going to say, you know, I'm happy with what I already have.

You don't really have to buy new "junk" to play the game though. If you're not interested in keyboards, then you can get a whole slew of new songs and stuff for your plastitar and plastidrums.

I can credit that. However since there was such little junk actually available on store shelves at launch, your opinion is invalid. LIKE ALWAYS! BOOM!

Right...I guess I'm more talking to the perception of it when you walked into the aisles the last few years. We're in tune to the reality, but I can see that escaping a large portion of the people that were picking up the games.

Don't have PowerGig numbers yet. Probably did worse than Shred if that's the case. I played PowerGig at the RB3 Midnight Launch at GameStop on 5-button mode (as well as Rock of the Dead) and both were pretty horrendous.

I wish everyone here was forced to play 2 hours of Power Gig's story mode. You'd walk away with so much respect for GH:WoR it's not even funny.

BTW, I FINALLY got my "linking" achievement the other night, what 3 weeks after release? Linked and unlinked a half dozen times over that time.

Looking over the Black Friday lists, there appear to be zero deals on RB3. That's going to hurt them... even $10 off and just being in the damn ads would get awareness out there. I'm still bewildered why only one ad at launch even showed that there were keyboards now.

Re: The Official Rock Band Thread of Music Game Evolution

I know everyone has an opinion on music but could the song list for RB3 have anything to do with it? I read thru all 83 songs and I only love around 28 songs and like another 12. The rest you can throw in the trash and burn. So that leaves over 50% of the songs which I don't care for.

Now I know that is just me but it seems that they are trying to be all things to all people with this song list. Looking at the list as a whole, sure there are some big names and big songs sprinkled in there but there is also a lot of shit.

Again, I am not trying to bash anyone's taste as everyone has music opinions. But having played or sung thru all the songs so far, it felt like there were a ton more songs in RB3 than in RB2 or 1 that felt like a chore to get thru.

Harmonies and keyboards meant they have to broaden the song list. Simple as that. I know as I played through the game I was thinking "Why the hell is this song on... oh, keyboards."

For what it's worth, I definitely don't disagree, Brian. The highs are incredibly high, but there are only a few songs that I was really excited to see. I've had people come over a couple of times who've played Rock Band with me before, and when I set the filter to only show RB3 songs, they just scroll through page after page, hardly ever stopping to say "oooh, let's play that!" I'm having a lot of fun actually playing songs I otherwise couldn't have cared less about, but just looking at a list of songs, my kneejerk reaction was that it's the weakest overall of the series. It's not a bad list, but I was more excited about the concept of playing keys and the prospect of pro guitar than the overwhelming majority of the songs in the game itself.

Yeah, but it's not as if there's a microscopic number of songs out there in the world with keyboards and harmonies.

About the sales, I wonder if not having the Squier at launch hurt. I'm not saying that hundreds of thousands of people would've bought the Squier and RB3, but I can see just the idea that the guitar exists and is out there being a draw. There are probably a decent number of people who figured they'd just wait to see the guitar before diving in, but by the time it comes out in March, they'll probably have moved onto other things and not care anymore.

At least for Black Friday, it makes sense they aren't doing any sales, since Viacom was probably hoping that Harmonix would of been sold by now, so they aren't going to waste money advertising. Although I would of thought for release they would want to advertise more since more sales could potentially increase the value of Harmonix.
