What does MTV Games do other than watch over HMX? Seems like there's a whole extra "company" there that don't do shit other than work on licensing music. I'm sure HMX has an internal department for that as welll. Viacom wants out of the game business all-together. I think HMX has the potential to be profitable if they are handled properly.

I'm confused by that as well. Are they dissolving MTV Games? Does that company even have employees?

I believe they have quite a few employees, as far as I'm aware. If Viacom is getting out of the games business, then they'd probably dissolve them too.

Probably publish and market the games. There's a lot that goes on as far as working with retailers for shelf space, promotional stuff, etc.

Then what does EA do?

This is all that exists for MTV Games on the web: http://www.mtv.com/games/

It just seems to be a blog. But it does have this: http://www.mtv.com/games/arcade/game...ameId=10036864

Which reminds me... they really missed an opportunity not making Beavis and Butthead playable characters...

Save MTV Games/Viacom's ass, based on this line from Wikipedia. :)

Martin Peers of the Wall Street Journal noted that Viacom lacked the physical distribution channels that other entertainment companies like Time Warner have, and instead were forced to rely on Electronic Arts to distribute the game and cut into their potential profits
It would actually surprise a lot of people the number of tiers you get in the operations of a video game publisher. Just a wild guess on my part since i'm not sure how the companies are aligned, but I'm sure EA may have worked on a higher level to distribute the games across the world and probably actually package/print the game, whereas I would assume MTV probably did more of the marketing, box art, and promotion type of stuff.

I could be wrong, but I thought the console manufacturers make the actual discs, even for third-party games.

i originally had the RB1 drumkit, but wasn't really a fan. liked the GHWT drumkit when i tried it, and got a fantastic deal on a bundle, so i got rid of the RB1 kit. i do think i'm gonna get a RB3 kit soon. though both my current guitars (GHWT) are acting a little wanky lately, so i have to look into some new guitars too..

I don't understand this line from that article

"To make it worse, the new ‘Rock Band’ DLC isn’t compatible with the old games"

Wouldn't that be like saying GH:WT DLC wasn't compatible with GH1? Or the DLC for Call of Duty: WaW doesn't work with the very first CoD game? Why should they?

Because it's an ignorant and/or biased editorial?

It's something that people who are giddy about the demise of music games seem to be latching on to. Of course we don't expect our Mass Effect 2 DLC to work in Mass Effect, but Rock Band DLC? Why, those are just songs! How dare they abandon their audience?! The nerve, asking people to upgrade to RB3 to have new features!

Oh now come on, when the dude explained that there wasn't literally an explosion I knew I was reading a quality piece of writing.

Isn't that what the Guitar Hero series got reamed for when DLC between stuff like GH3 wasn't compatible with World Tour or vice versa, while Rock Band maintained compatibility between 1 and 2? It makes sense to me as a complaint since I remember Rock Band fans arguing quite vehemently about it in support of it as a "platform."

DLC for RB1 still working in RB3 makes sense and should be expected.

DLC for RB3 working for RB1 makes little sense, yet still, OUTRAGE!

I mean, what person would still be buying DLC each and every week yet doesn't want to pick up RB3? Cost? Skip a couple weeks of DLC.

Outrage? A little hyperbole don't you think

It makes sense that advancements in a game will prevent it from being compatible with previous versions, but it seems pretty obvious to me how it could be a complaint given the first two games.

There was a public outcry last week when it was "rediscovered" by the media even though it was confirmed by Harmonix directly at E3 five months ago.

Ah, must not have been paying attention. Naturally that's the internet community though. But again, it seems easy to see why some people would complain about it. As for this comment:

This should be obvious too, but obviously not everyone buys DLC each and every week, so those people might not be that eager to buy RB3. They just want to grab songs from whatever artist they like, and in that case RB2 might be enough. I know there are people here that feel the Rock Band series is the greatest game ever, but these don't seem exactly like illogical complaints to me

This isn't the same thing though. For that to be the case none of your DLC from RB1/2 would work in RB3. That's a much different situation than requiring RB3 for all stuff going forward, but still allowing all your old iteration DLC to work.

I doubt anyone here needs it but they appear to have more codes now for the Lego RB transfer. Just did mine a little while ago.

Thanks! Been waiting on this since I picked up RB3.
