Re: Crackdown 2

Those reviews seem to confirm what we all thought from the demo -- the game is rough looking and repetitive and frustrating but still fun. I sort of wish I hadn't preordered it, but since it's only costing me $37.50, I guess it will be worth checking out. I'll look for you guys online next week as this sounds like a much better game online.

Looks like I'll wait for it to hit $20 or so.

Pretty much in the same boat. I had a $20 game credit from Amazon buying Red Dead and used it for this. Plus I'm getting a $10.00 credit for this game.

Re: Crackdown 2

Joystiq's take

I know if you were being reductionist, you could boil many game concepts down to a paragraph, but I swear, I'm doing no boiling. It's the same thing. Again and again and again. You'll never fight an enemy that presents any thing close to a challenge, you'll never meet another character, you'll never hear another scrap of dialog (save for the omnipresent, disembodied voice of the Agency Director, who's annoyingly repetitive as often as he's mildly entertaining). Rather than improve the pretense for the power fantasy laid down by Realtime Worlds in Crackdown, new torchbearer Ruffian Games seems to have tried to eliminate it all together. There are some scattered audio logs that give a bit more backstory to the creatures and gangs you're fighting, but they rarely dovetail with the things you're actually doing in the world.

That world, by the way, is the same one you already explored in Crackdown, if a touch more run down. Tack that on to the loads of comically plain textures and frequent slowdown and you've got a graphical package that's doing nothing to alleviate the sense of déjà vu. Pacific City may have been, as the Agency Director claimed at the end of Crackdown, "only the beginning," but nobody thought to tell Ruffian.
So basically, 8 months to make a $60 warmed-over retreat of a game that could've been a $20 DLC...

Sounds like it.

But remember, the sequel nearly didn't get made. It kind of sounds like they shouldn't have bothered.

Exactly. If you aren't going to do it right then why bother at all?

Re: Crackdown 2

I don't mind repetition, since the first game was just doing one thing over and over again. I wouldn't hold that against the game at all. I just don't like those damn freaks. Grrr.

I paid $30 for it, and a buddy and I are playing co-op, so I'm not complaining.

Re: Crackdown 2

Having lots of fun with it thus far. I do have some design choice issues, but nothing that has detracted enough from my overall experience thus far.

I LOVE that it's in the same city. I had a blast last night running around with 3 other friends looking at everything that's changed.

Re: Crackdown 2

The first game had all kinds of reasons to not like it but I loved the hell out of it....I am getting the same vibe with this one. A blast to play...and if it should have been dlc...then it would have been the greatest dlc of all time...

Re: Crackdown 2

Well, the disc just took a flight across my room and into the wall. I'm sick of this broken pile of crap. It's not remotely fun, the multiplayer sucks since there is nothing to do, and half the races/moving orbs are glitchy and don't work. There is a special place in hell for the retard who designed moving orbs that you can't catch and that go through walls/dirt/rocks. What a colossal failure of a sequel.

Well I haven't played it yet but I can't believe they did away with the assassination mission structure of the first game. It might have been somewhat repeditive but it was always fun. I have a special place in my heart for this one sub-boss who for no apparent reason fell off a freighter in the harbor and plummeted to his death rather than have me kill him. Ah, memories!

You had no fun with the 4 player Co-Op?

I don't get how Ruffian could miss the fact of how much fun people had attempting those assassinations. Deciding where to climb, and how to attack was the second best part of Crackdown. (first being Orbs, of course).

The citizen on acoustic guitar is awesome. Hilarious little easter egg.

Re: Crackdown 2

I finished it, and loved it...but as said above it is way to short for a sandbox game. If I had not spent so much time killing my son, and him killing me, I think it would be about a 6 hour game. I have spent another 4 hours or so collecting orbs and just messing around, and now I really don't feel the need to keep playing. 10 hours is ok for a FPS, but a sandbox game, with its inherent wondering around eating up time, should not be that short. This smells of DLC for 10 bucks each that would have been part of the single player game in the past...someone got greedy on this one.

DLC coming

Ruffian producer James Cope recently told MTV Multiplayer Blog that the first pack, entitled Toy Box, will reintroduce players to the Keys to the City debug mode that lets players spawn objects at will, and will also introduce new gadgets and vehicles.

Deluge, the other pack currently in the works, will, in Cope’s words, introduce “a completely new way to play the game,” as opposed to simply throwing in “some new map packs for the game you’ve already got.” Could the "deluge" refer to a literal flood of some kind? Or perhaps a way to direct massive amounts of infected around the map? Don't know, and Ruffian isn't telling just yet, so guess away.
Anyways, I think it took me about 5 hours for all the project sunburst & tactical locations, along with being level 5 for everything except driving.

Re: Crackdown 2

so far having fun. i don't seem to remember the controls on the first game being so loose, but that could just be my forgetfulness. the missions seemed to be cut and paste, just in different parts of the city. what i'm enjoying is collecting orbs solo and in co-op and then just doing the missions on co-op.

Re: Crackdown 2

Man, wish I waited for reviews before preordering this... I guess that's the catch with Amazon's gift card deals. Argh. And people thought the missions in Infamous and Prototype were repetitive, at least those games, especially Prototype, had a better set of powers. I think that's my biggest complaint, I kept on thinking back to Prototype (and I thought that game was good, but not great).

Re: Crackdown 2

Mine came today from Amazon and some of the guys I play with have already started. They seem to like it and though not overwhelming great said it's fun. So after tonight I'll throw my two cents.

Re: Crackdown 2

Well I've played it for a couple of days now, both single and in four player co-op. And yes there are pros and cons to the game...

Pros -
has a degree of "fun-Factor" for sure. There's always something going on and alsways something to do. Just doing Missions is not as straight-forward and clear. You've got Bad guys, Zombies, Cops and the innocent public to deal with all at once sometimes. Ammo is at a preminium and so if you haven't upped your strength level you're going to face probems.

I haven't got the "Glide Suit" yet but getting around is like whatever and however you can. Drive anything or run & jump dealing with zombies and bad guys along the way. And if you have upped your strength level to at least (3) then using lamp-posts, street signs, steel I beans, concrete pillars, doors cars and even bodies to bash and smash is pure fun. Weapons are ok with the UV Gun on zombies pretty cool along with rockets and Grenades.

Graphics - not to bad for cell shading though not like say Borderlands by any means. Actually with the large city it looks pretty good and some detail is there but face it...it's not COD, GOW or Bioshock.

Cons -
The jumping mechanics can be frustrating at times especially when trying to get to tight or precise places.
the Round Radar during co-op where you have no clue who is who, distance, on top or down below. If you play co-op and no mike...you're screwed
Ammo PU....you can go thru this in no time flat and most of the time you're forced to pickup another weapon which in most cases doesn't have much either.

Overall it's pretty fun but not up there with COD's, Halo's, GOW's and such. the so-called small pain is the jumping. To increase it you need more Orbs. B Overall I give it ut allot of the Orbs are in places you need to be able to jump high. Or you've got to cross a large area or high point and if you can't jump it's the long way around. Overall I give it about a 8 of 10.
