Re: Alan Wake

This game is definitely going to go down as one of my most disappointing games ever. The more time after I beat, the more I really dislike this game.

Re: Alan Wake

I've played only through Episode I. You can tell the game has been in development for a long time. It very much feels like a last-gen game (perhaps that's unfair -- more like an early current-gen game). Iffy textures and physics, poor lip sync, inconsistent lighting, and pre-rendered(!) cut scenes. Also, the voice-over narration telling me what I already see and know is extremely annoying.

I'm having fun, but really this is just "Luigi's Mansion" with guns instead of a vacuum cleaner.

Re: Alan Wake

Agree with you on the production values of the game... I'm at the tale end of Episode 2 and I'm wondering how much wandering thru the woods one can do without getting completely fed up with this game. Sure, it keeps me on edge but it doesn't make me want to play it all the time like Red Dead Redemption does.

Re: Alan Wake

I'm halfway through episode 3. It's fun, but I can't play more than one episode in a sitting; I just get too tense. The silly collect-'em-all achievements are the only thing I could really do without.

I really wish they hadn't scrapped the PC version. I wanna play this but not enough to buy a 360.

Re: Alan Wake

I started playing this Thursday night. I loved Episode 1, but it went slightly downhill in Episode 2. First of all, I don't like the agent (Barry?). He just didn't fit and took me out of the story just as I was being drawn in. Second, the driving is terrible. I was excited when I realized I was going to get to drive and 5 seconds later wanted it to end. I'm hoping Episode 3 is more like the first.

Re: Alan Wake

Looks like the DLC is up two weeks early: http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/ga...0805?cid=SLink

As far as I can tell it's currently free for everyone. I thought you had to have the code in the new copy of the retail game. Queue it up now and ask questions later since it's probably a mistake that'll be fixed soon.

Get used to disappointment.

Even more annoying than Barry is the game's hand-holding:

Barry: "Hey Al, you need to find the key!"
Alan: "I will find the key for you, Barry."
Minimap: "Find the Key"
Voiceover: "I needed to find the the key."

And before finding the key you'll find a manuscript page that reads "I found the key."

Re: Alan Wake

I was just passing the news along from some site. I didn't check or notice it was just a video! My bad.

Groucho, if you give me your login information, I can go to http://marketplace.xbox.com/en-US/my...Downloads.aspx and delete it before it touches your hard drive!

Re: Alan Wake

Sure the game has foibles, but I thought the gameplay and setting got better as the episodes progressed. However, I really disliked the parts that were in the apartment in NYC.

No worries. Hell, for all I know, some idiot at Microsoft was supposed to upload the preview video but actually uploaded the add-on, so even though it says it's a video, it's actually the add-on.

Re: Alan Wake

The site actually updated the post with this:

Update: Sorry folks, but it looks like the download is actually a new trailer for “The Signal”, even though the description is that of the DLC pack. Also, the DLC icon has been changed to the video icon. So, unfortunately this was a false alarm. Go back to patiently waiting.
Whether or not that's true, I don't know. Either way, someone is covering their ass here.

Re: Alan Wake

Just started playing this yesterday. Frankly, it's almost too scary for me to keep playing. The music, the atmosphere are both pretty top notch and effective at making me nervous and on edge. My gf keeps laughing at me and asking if I'm gonna have to quit this game, too (I eventually stopped playing BioShock because I would jump at the slightest noise while playing it. I'll go back one day.)

There was one really awesome part in Episode 2 when I was in a house and out of the corner of my eye I could see a Taken crossing past a window. I didn't jump, but I did have two thoughts 1) that was super cool, how can I make that happen again. and 2) I really hope that guy isn't out there waiting for me (he wasn't).

And while the controls and gameplay are a little clunky and the "mystery" feels a little obvious and the character animations aren't that great, the mood, the soundtrack, the environments, the suspense is all fantastic (through episode 2 so far.)

Re: Alan Wake

Is there a way to see what Thermos and Can Pyramids you've missed broken down by Episode?

Re: Alan Wake

F that S. The levels are huge enough as it is, guess I won't be going after those achievements.

I think it's awesome that so many people have experienced that moment and been freaked out by it. It was such a subtle touch and I'm pretty sure you can get through that part of the game without ever having seen it.

I saw that guy run across the screen 3 times in Chapter 2... but the window one was the freakiest. I literally finished up Chapter 2 last night and found those GD birds a pain in the ass to kill. Need more ammo please!!!!

Re: Alan Wake

Don't shoot the birds. Your flashlight is sufficient.

I'm playing through on Nightmare now, and it's a completely different game (for the better). Much like Resident Evil, ammo suddenly becomes a rare commodity, so in each encounter you need to make a "fight or flee" decision. Dodge, which really wasn't needed in Normal, is now a vital skill.

Re: Alan Wake

I jumped back into this the other night and finished Chapter 2. I didn't see anyone through a window.
